DDFS prelims

All this talk about vises and tying reminded me that I *promised* myself
I wouldn't wait until December this year to hold the annual Dog Days Fly
Swap. This will be the TAJFIADDFS (Third Annual Joe Fleischman in
Absentia Dog Days Fly Swap, for those counting such things.)

This swap is for patterns you've found most successful during the warm
months of summer. The rules are simple: If 15 people join, you tie 15
flies. If 1,000 people join. . . well, let's shoot for somewhere between
15-30. The past few years have been between 15-20. More rules for
tagging, shipping, etc. will follow once we've established if there is
any interest in the swap.

Since I'm in the process of moving from one home to another, I'm going
to set the sign-up period from now through August 22. That's the date
that I return to work and known-working Internet connectivity. It's also
probably the date that I'll be able to find my tying stuff again. :)
BTW, one of the nice things about this move is that I'll be able to
establish territory as a fly-tying zone. WooHOOOO!

Just reply to this post if you're interested and I'll put you on the
list.

I'm in. Fly TBD at this point.....but I'm leaning towards either a PMD
variant (wingless) in size 18 or 20 or some terrestrial (Flying Ant,
perhaps). Either way..count me in.

Might as well put me on the list. Fly TBD, but it'll likely be a
hopper mutation of some sort or other. I've got one I've been tying
that has the bullet-head/swept-back wing of deer or elk hair like a
Madam X, but doesn't have those silly rubber legs; rather I use CDC
wrapped like the CDC and Elk, where the body and feelers/legs are of CDC.

I'll be testing it this weekend if weather permits, but it looks
good in the vise.

Would like to try it, however, i'm also pretty new to tying but I'm sure I
can muster up 15 or so flies (or whatever the number decided
is)...TBD...Can't promise perfection but i'll give it a shot.

Strongly considered joining last year's swap, but decided not to. This year,
what the hell -- I'll give it a shot. You guys just have to promise not to
ridicule my tying too much...

Okie-dokie. I'm putting Stan in the swap, too, 'cause he's been too sick to
read much roff lately. If he can't tie for some reason, I'll do two flies
because that's just the kinda guy I am. That makes eight so far, so SWAP-ON!
There's still lots of time for you fence-sitters to chime in. I am a strong
TBD, but leaning to some kind of BIG Adams look-alike. I was fishing with
one of those the other day, size 14 or so, and had a 'bow explode on the
thing, jumping completely clear of the water. Great fun.

To you folks saying you're new to this tying stuff or not very good at it,
bull pucky - you haven't seen anything til you see some of the crap I can
tie. Why do you think I head up these swaps? I get to trade 15-20 crappy
flies for some decent ones. :)

Hmm, most folks get sick *after* reading roff, not before. ;-)

Tell him to get well soon.

Oh no, not me. The only time I was in a swap I had
Frank Sr. promising to remove and rearrange some of
my body parts. For a cuddly masseuse magnet he can
be a mean old cuss. ;-)

I don't believe that for a minute. You're just on a
short hiatus, the masseuses just can't keep their hands
off you for long. ;-)

And a mean old cuss is probably the right guy to be
swapmeister in a swap with roffian procrastinators.

Yeah, but I'm easy. The way things are shaping up are like this: the sign up
will end on 8/22, and the due date will be somewhere around 9/14 (real rules
and dates will follow after the sign up ends.) Of course, I'm hoping some of
the DDFS "usual suspects" (not to drop any names, but John Whiteley, Joshua
Rosenblatt, Matt McCray, Myron "riverman" Buck, Paul "bouncer" Morrison,
Paul Williamson, Peter Charles, Randy "bugcaster" Kane, Stev Lenon, Svend
Tang-Petersen, Tim Carter, Tom Littleton, Tony Weall and friend Eddie,
Warren Findley, Wayne Patton, et. al.) come around and join soon. If you
start now, you could EASILY have the nine flies required at this time
finished before the swap begins. Get off yer behind and join the freakin'
swap!

Hey, Frank. Are you close enough to go over there and kick Forty's butt?

Wilkerson, Chris "Padishar Creel" Fanning, John "JR" Russell

Hardly a usual suspect, but I appreciate the nod. I gotta pass, though,
as I'm still getting settled in here and haven't even bought a desktop
where I can tie flies. But I hope to get in on one in the near future,
and maybe even introduce some new tyers to ROFF, as the HKFFC has been
formed and we're meeting this weekend for some brews in a local pub.

Tony - Check your yahoo email. Sorry we missed you for this swap; you always
tie great flies and help make the swaps a true international event. I had
sent you an email trying to get in touch with you and Eddie before the
deadline, but must have had an old email address. If someone cancels, I'll
let you know. Also, keep an eye out here on roff/rofft for updates.
