Getting ready for the Mid-Tenn Classic 2006!

I guess it's always a good idea to plan early, so here's what we're working
on for the 2006 Mid-Tenn Classic!

Justin Hires, Joe Haubenreich, and I put our heads together recently to pick
a new lake to host the next Classic. Of all of the great places to fish in
Tennessee this was a hard decision. We had kicked around thoughts of hosting
a tournament on this lake for a while, but the eastern lakes were hard to
resist. What sealed this deal on hosting on this new lake was the fact that
there is just about any kind of water that you'd want to fish, given the
will to make some runs. But don't think that you'll need a fast boat to fish
here... Justin and I have spent nights in this one cove catching good
numbers and sizes of fish. As a matter of fact, I've personally not been
outside of a 5 mile run from our proposed launch site.

I guess I can go ahead and let the cat out of the bag now and tell you that
the new location (very centrally located, I might add) will be Lake Barkley!
The launch site will actually be in Kentucky waters, so be sure to have a
Kentucky license. It will be a long run to fish Tennessee waters, so you can
probably do without buying a license for Tennessee. Launch site (proposed)
will be from the Eddy Creek area which is toward the northern end of the
lake, and just a short ride to the canal that connects Lake Barkley to
Kentucky Lake!

We'll be posting more information as we get it and will be updating the
Mid-Tenn Classic web-site as well.

Below is information from Fishing Hotspots on Lake Barkley.

Dear Mr. Jerry Barton,

We regret to inform you that your Uncle Bill has passed away due to a rare
virus. He asked that all of his relatives be contacted only after his burial
plans have been made, as well as after a short ceremony. We are fulfilling
his last wishes.

Your uncle has left a small estate in Eastern Tennessee that is being
distributed to a select number of family and friends. Although we cannot say
what stake you are to receive of this estate, we believe that it would be in
your best interest to be at the final reading of the will. Said reading will
be held close to Lake Barkley, in Eddysville, Kentucky in April, 2006. The
final date is still to be determined. We are gathering a small group of
friends and relatives for this reading and encourage you to be there.

If you are unable to attend, we will have no choice but to divide any share
you may be entitled to equally amoung the others in attendance.

Thank You,
Al Jajwuth, SMF

---End---

There, see how easy it is?

Your uncle has left a small estate in Eastern Tennessee that is being
distributed to a select number of family and friends. Although we cannot
say what stake you are to receive of this estate, we believe that it would
be in your best interest to be at the final reading of the will. Said
reading will be held close to Lake Barkley, in Eddysville, Kentucky in
April, 2006. The final date is still to be determined. We are gathering a
small group of friends and relatives for this reading and encourage you to
be there.

If you are unable to attend, we will have no choice but to divide any
share you may be entitled to equally amoung the others in attendance.

Thank You,
Al Jajwuth, SMF

There, see how easy it is?

Dear Mr. Barton,

It has been ten years since you submitted your application for civilian
space travel. After much consideration you have been selected for a final
drawing to determine which of the final 3 applicants will be selected.
This drawing is a first for NASA and we would appreciate if you could be
here in person for this special event. Keep in mind due to the shock that
might be involved in winning this drawing you will be required to bring
along that beer guzziling son of yours and his dress wearing two foot

Seeing as how this is the closest Classic ever to Urbana, IL
I'm gonna try to be there as a canoeist, non-competitor.

Getting ready for the Mid-Tenn Classic 2006!

Let me add to the info. Charles was so nice to list. The size limit was
changed
to 15" sometime back. On a typical day you will be kept busy catching
Large and
smallmouth bass all day, and night.

The area we will be launching from (EddyCreek)and most of the lake also
has many RipRap/Chunk rock banks. There are many docks, stumps,
laydowns, brushpiles,
and Buck bushes. If you like to fish off shore; you'll find many good
humps to
fish. Just about any and every bank has good fishing. There are very
few banks
that I have not found fish.

From our launch site you will be able to go directly

into a big creek, fish Eddycreek lake side. Drive 3 miles out of
Eddycreek
into the main lake of Barkley. It is around 16 miles from launch to the
cannal
to KY Lake.

As far as types of techniques, and lures to use: I have found just
about anything and everything works. The best color choices are, Green
pumpkin, Watermelon, Redshad, Black, Rootbeer green, and cotton candy.
Also, anything
in those colors with Red flake are very good. The fish there like some
kind
of red on the bait.

Here is a website to checkout more details including lake levels, and
fishing
reports:www.kentuckylake.com

Also, from what I hear Jack Dalzell is the pro on this lake. Hey, Jack
maybe
you can give us some of your insites about the lake?

I know it is early to be planning this but, lodging books quickly down
there.

We are looking into staying at the www.Palisades-resort.com I have
stayed in
their motel rooms before. Their rooms are very nice! This place is
directly
across from the launch ramp. They offer private dock/slips included in
the room
rate.

Here are the details of the rooms:

The Terrace Level is a 3 bedroom unit, two bath, large living area with
bar, pool table, seating for 21 people, two color cable televisions
(one with VCR/DVD) & full modern kitchen, for up to 14 people. He will
give us a deal of $187.00 for this
per night.

Each large motel room has two Queen beds, full modern bath, TV/VCR/DVD
color cable television, refrigerator, microwave & coffee pot. The rooms
open through a sliding door to a deck that overlooks the pool, lake &
grounds. He will give us Motel room rates of $58.00 per night. If
anyone would rather stay in a private room.

Also, if we get enough people, and/or a number that will stay 3 nights,
he will
give us a even better deal. Like including the Palisades House that is
large in
size and offers 8 beds included in the $187.00 price.

I am currently on his list. If someone else asks for the same dates, he
will call me to make a decision. So, we don't have long to book.

We need to get a number who will be going, and if possible let us know
how many
nights you plan to stay.

Any questions for me post here or you can email me at

LAKE PROFILE
SIZE AND DEPTH - ABOUT 57,900 ACRES WITH A MAXIMUM DEPTH OF ABOUT 68 FEET.
THE AVERAGE DEPTH IS ABOUT 12 FEET.

WATER SOURCE - AN IMPOUNDMENT OF THE CUMBERLAND RIVER. MAJOR TRIBUTARIES
INCLUDE LITTLE RIVER AND EDDY CREEK. COMPLETED IN 1966, THE DAM PROVIDES
NAVIGATIONAL ACCESS TO THE RIVER AND HYDROELECTRIC POWER. SURFACE ELEVATION
DURING SUMMER IS MAINTAINED AT ABOUT 359 FEET ABOVE MEAN SE LEVEL (MSL).
WINTER ELEVATION IS KEPT AT ABOUT 354 FEET MSL. ANNUAL FLUCTUATIONS CAN VARY
FROM ABOUT 370 TO DRAWDOWN IN ADVANCE OF FLOOD LEVELS OF 346 FEET MSL. AN
OPEN CANAL TO KENTUCKY LAKE ALLOWS A FLOW TO OR FROM EACH LAKE DEPENDING
UPON RAINFALL WITHIN EACH DRAINAGE SYSTEM AND HYDROELECTRIC ACTIVITY AT
EITHER DAM.

SHORELINE - VERY IRREGULAR AND ABOUT 1,004 MILES IN LENGTH. MOSTLY HIGH CLAY
BANKS , BUT SOME SANDSTONE CLIFFS EXIST. THERE ARE ALSO LIMITED AREAS OF
LIMESTONE AND CHERT. DEVELOPMENT IS CONFINED TO THE EASTERN SIDE. THE
WESTERN SIDE FORMS A BOUNDARY OF THE LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES NATIONAL
RECREATION AREA.

BOTTOM - 70% CLAY AND GRAVEL, 10% MUCK (LOCATED IN THE BACKS OF BAYS) AND
15% BROKEN OR LAYERED BEDROCK. THE REMAINING 5% INCLUDES STUMPS AND MANMADE
FEATURES LIKE OLD ROADWAYS AND BRIDGES.
WATER - MODERATE TO VERY FERTILE WITH A LIGHT BROWNISH COLOR. A THERMOCLINE
CAN DEVELOP DURING LATE SUMMER, ESPECIALLY DURING DROUGHT YEARS, AT 12 TO 15
FEET. DEPLETION OF DISSOLVED OXYGEN OCCURS ONLY IN CREEK CHANNELS AND BAYS.
DEPENDING UPON ANNUAL RAINFALL, SECCHI DISK READINGS (A MEASURE OF
TRANSPARENCY) CAN RANGE FROM 2 TO 3.5 FEET.

COVER - IN RECENT YEARS, SUBMERGENT SPECIES INCLUDING EURASIAN MILFOIL,
DRAMATICALLY DECLINED AS NORMAL ANNUAL HIGH WATER EVENTS INCREASED TURBIDITY
AND REDUCED SUNLIGHT PENETRATION. THE SPREAD OF THE EXOTIC EURASIAN MILFOIL
PEAKED IN THE MID-1990'S AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OF REDUCED RAINFALL AND
INCREASED WATER CLARITY. ALTHOUGH CHEMICAL SPRAYING WAS USED BY THE
TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY AROUND DOCKS, RESORTS AND SWIMMING AREAS,
KENTUCKY AND TENNESSEE BIOLOGISTS AGREE THAT VEGETATION DEPLETION,
ESPECIALLY THE MAIN LAKE MILFOIL BEDS, OCCURRED BECAUSE OF THE RETURN OF
AVERAGE POOL LEVELS AND HIGHER, MORE TURBID WATER CONDITIONS. OTHER SPECIES
PRESENT IN VERY MINOR AMOUNTS INCLUDE COONTAIL, SOUTHERN NAIAD, SPINEYLEAF
NAIAD AND AMERICAN PONDWEED. EMERGENT WATERWILLOW IS EVIDENT THROUGHOUT THE
LAKE, IN ASSOCIATION WITH BUTTON BUSH, IN THE BACKS OF COVES. BRUSH PILES
AND STAKE BEDS HAVE BEEN PLACED IN THE BACKS OF COVES BY PRIVATE PARTIES AND
THE STATES.

FEATURED SPECIES - LARGEMOUTH BASS, CHANNEL CATFISH, WHITE CRAPPIE, WHITE
BASS, BLUEGILL, LONGEAR SUNFISH.

COMMENT - LARGEMOUTH BASS NUMBERS HAVE STABILIZED. RELATIVE WEIGHTS (AN
INDEX OF CONDITION) SHOW THEY ARE VERY HEALTHY. A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF THE
POPULATION IS OVER THE MINIMUM LENGTH LIMIT OF 14-INCHES. BASS OVER 8-POUNDS
AND MANY IN THE 3-TO 6-POUND RANGE ARE AVAILABLE. SMALLMOUTH BASS
POPULATIONS IN THE SOUTH PORTION OF BARKLEY LAKE ARE OF MINOR IMPORTANCE.

FORAGE - IN TERMS OF ABUNDANCE, GIZZARD SHAD COMPRISE THE BULK OF THE FORAGE
BASE, BUT THREADFIN SHAD ARE OF GREATER IMPORTANCE BECAUSE THEY ONLY GROW TO
ABOUT 4-INCHES IN LENGTH. OTHER SPECIES INCLUDE EMERALD SHINER, GOLDEN
SHINER, BROOK SILVERSIDE, BULLHEAD MINNOW AND SILVER CHUB. YOUNG-OF-THE-YEAR
OF ALL SPECIES, ESPECIALLY BLUEGILL, ARE HEAVILY UTILIZED. CRAYFISH, SNAILS,
SMALL MUSSELS AND INSECTS ARE ALL PART OF THE FOOD CHAIN.

it? Heck yeah! This lake will be really fun in the spring with all the
yellow flowers in the water. I've had great success in the spring on
Barkley fishing the yeller flowers with a white jig and a
chartruese/white Secret Weapon spinnerbait (1/2 oz with willow/colorado
blades in gold). A buzzbait could produce a hawg if you have patients.
I don't know for sure if I can be there, but I really want to. If I

maybe not......Eddy creek has an aweful lot of fish in it!

flowers. 'Cept flower is really pronounced, "fliers" just light you read it,

BAYS.
DEPENDING UPON ANNUAL RAINFALL, SECCHI DISK READINGS (A MEASURE OF
TRANSPARENCY) CAN RANGE FROM 2 TO 3.5 FEET.

COVER - IN RECENT YEARS, SUBMERGENT SPECIES INCLUDING EURASIAN MILFOIL,
DRAMATICALLY DECLINED AS NORMAL ANNUAL HIGH WATER EVENTS INCREASED

TURBIDITY
AND REDUCED SUNLIGHT PENETRATION. THE SPREAD OF THE EXOTIC EURASIAN

MILFOIL
PEAKED IN THE MID-1990'S AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OF REDUCED RAINFALL AND
INCREASED WATER CLARITY. ALTHOUGH CHEMICAL SPRAYING WAS USED BY THE
TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY AROUND DOCKS, RESORTS AND SWIMMING AREAS,
KENTUCKY AND TENNESSEE BIOLOGISTS AGREE THAT VEGETATION DEPLETION,

FEATURED SPECIES - LARGEMOUTH BASS, CHANNEL CATFISH, WHITE CRAPPIE,

WHITE
BASS, BLUEGILL, LONGEAR SUNFISH.

COMMENT - LARGEMOUTH BASS NUMBERS HAVE STABILIZED. RELATIVE WEIGHTS (AN
INDEX OF CONDITION) SHOW THEY ARE VERY HEALTHY. A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF THE
POPULATION IS OVER THE MINIMUM LENGTH LIMIT OF 14-INCHES. BASS OVER

8-POUNDS
AND MANY IN THE 3-TO 6-POUND RANGE ARE AVAILABLE. SMALLMOUTH BASS
POPULATIONS IN THE SOUTH PORTION OF BARKLEY LAKE ARE OF MINOR

IMPORTANCE.

FORAGE - IN TERMS OF ABUNDANCE, GIZZARD SHAD COMPRISE THE BULK OF THE

FORAGE
BASE, BUT THREADFIN SHAD ARE OF GREATER IMPORTANCE BECAUSE THEY ONLY

GROW TO
ABOUT 4-INCHES IN LENGTH. OTHER SPECIES INCLUDE EMERALD SHINER, GOLDEN
SHINER, BROOK SILVERSIDE, BULLHEAD MINNOW AND SILVER CHUB.

YOUNG-OF-THE-YEAR
OF ALL SPECIES, ESPECIALLY BLUEGILL, ARE HEAVILY UTILIZED. CRAYFISH,

SNAILS,
SMALL MUSSELS AND INSECTS ARE ALL PART OF THE FOOD CHAIN.

I guess it's always a good idea to plan early, so here's what we're

working
on for the 2006 Mid-Tenn Classic!

Justin Hires, Joe Haubenreich, and I put our heads together recently to

pick
a new lake to host the next Classic. Of all of the great places to fish

in
Tennessee this was a hard decision. We had kicked around thoughts of

hosting
a tournament on this lake for a while, but the eastern lakes were hard

to
resist. What sealed this deal on hosting on this new lake was the fact

that
there is just about any kind of water that you'd want to fish, given
the
will to make some runs. But don't think that you'll need a fast boat to

fish
here... Justin and I have spent nights in this one cove catching good
numbers and sizes of fish. As a matter of fact, I've personally not
been
outside of a 5 mile run from our proposed launch site.

I guess I can go ahead and let the cat out of the bag now and tell you

that
the new location (very centrally located, I might add) will be Lake

Barkley!
The launch site will actually be in Kentucky waters, so be sure to have

a
Kentucky license. It will be a long run to fish Tennessee waters, so
you

can
probably do without buying a license for Tennessee. Launch site

(proposed)
will be from the Eddy Creek area which is toward the northern end of
the
lake, and just a short ride to the canal that connects Lake Barkley to
Kentucky Lake!

We'll be posting more information as we get it and will be updating the
Mid-Tenn Classic web-site as well.

Below is information from Fishing Hotspots on Lake Barkley.

LAKE PROFILE
SIZE AND DEPTH - ABOUT 57,900 ACRES WITH A MAXIMUM DEPTH OF ABOUT 68

FEET.
THE AVERAGE DEPTH IS ABOUT 12 FEET.

WATER SOURCE - AN IMPOUNDMENT OF THE CUMBERLAND RIVER. MAJOR
TRIBUTARIES
INCLUDE LITTLE RIVER AND EDDY CREEK. COMPLETED IN 1966, THE DAM
PROVIDES
NAVIGATIONAL ACCESS TO THE RIVER AND HYDROELECTRIC POWER. SURFACE

ELEVATION
DURING SUMMER IS MAINTAINED AT ABOUT 359 FEET ABOVE MEAN SE LEVEL
(MSL).
WINTER ELEVATION IS KEPT AT ABOUT 354 FEET MSL. ANNUAL FLUCTUATIONS CAN

VARY
FROM ABOUT 370 TO DRAWDOWN IN ADVANCE OF FLOOD LEVELS OF 346 FEET MSL.

AN
OPEN CANAL TO KENTUCKY LAKE ALLOWS A FLOW TO OR FROM EACH LAKE
DEPENDING
UPON RAINFALL WITHIN EACH DRAINAGE SYSTEM AND HYDROELECTRIC ACTIVITY AT
EITHER DAM.

SHORELINE - VERY IRREGULAR AND ABOUT 1,004 MILES IN LENGTH. MOSTLY HIGH

CLAY
BANKS , BUT SOME SANDSTONE CLIFFS EXIST. THERE ARE ALSO LIMITED AREAS
OF
LIMESTONE AND CHERT. DEVELOPMENT IS CONFINED TO THE EASTERN SIDE. THE
WESTERN SIDE FORMS A BOUNDARY OF THE LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES NATIONAL
RECREATION AREA.

BOTTOM - 70% CLAY AND GRAVEL, 10% MUCK (LOCATED IN THE BACKS OF BAYS)

AND
15% BROKEN OR LAYERED BEDROCK. THE REMAINING 5% INCLUDES STUMPS AND

MANMADE
FEATURES LIKE OLD ROADWAYS AND BRIDGES.
WATER - MODERATE TO VERY FERTILE WITH A LIGHT BROWNISH COLOR. A

THERMOCLINE
CAN DEVELOP DURING LATE SUMMER, ESPECIALLY DURING DROUGHT YEARS, AT 12

Getting ready for the Mid-Tenn Classic 2006!

The April 15th weekend would be the best on the stand point that our
resort is currently open for that weekend. Have you guys checked out
the pics of the resort? Very nice place to
stay!www.palisades-resort.com

Also, the water should be at or around summer pool by then.

Warren, how ya doing? Been awhile. I hope you can make it! I think you
would really like it. I know
you like to fish offshore...Barkley and KY lake has more offshore humps
than you can fish. I know
you're good at that kind of fishing. Make be we could hookup and you
could teach me somethings
about it. It's my down fall.

You should compete, Ken. Within a few paddle strokes of the ramp or the boat
slips across the cove you can probably catch thirty bass up to five pounds.
Since you would be fishing more and running less than most, you would stand
a good to fair chance of coming out on top.

And you know that if it's humanly possible, I will be there as a boater.

Seeing as how this is the closest Classic ever to Urbana, IL
I'm gonna try to be there as a canoeist, non-competitor.

Kind of a funny aside, I've never had a Kentucky fishing license.
Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, Tennessee,
Alabama, North Carolina, Wyoming, Montana, and of course Illinois
but never Kentucky. A virgin experience !! At my age !! ;-)

Charles, I guess we'd better put another face lift on the ol'
midtennclassic.org site. This lake is partially in Tennessee, so we can
still use the same name, or just go with the name Moe came up with for the
Okeechobee tournament... Southern Classic. That sounds good... Southern
Classic 2006 - Lake Barkley, KY - April 15, 2006.

We need to go ahead and lock in the lodging arrangements so we'll be sure to
have a place to stay.

One of us will need to put down a deposit, probably. For that reason, we may
need folks who are likely to come to mail in a deposit. When we work out the
details, we can post them here and on the midtennclassic.org Website.

Here's the current roster, near as I can make out. If anybody else is coming
and their name isn't on the list, if you need to drop off, or if you're
ready to move from "hoping" to "planning," please respond to this note:

Joe,

April 15th. huh? That's the same day as income tax day isn't it? LOL ! You
may or may not know, but "ole' fat boy" had a little trouble with the
"ticker" early this past summer. But ........ if all goes well, You can add
my name to the list. I may even bring the Ranger down this year and fish. If
not, I'll play "weight master" for the group again. Either way, I always
look forward and enjoy the fellowship.

Papa John.
