If you want BIG fish, then I do understand why you're going in July. If you wait a little later, you'll run into a few more species of salmon. Either way, you'll have rainbows, dollies and grayling to contend with, on top of the kings. I hear it's an awesome trip. Wish I had gone when the opportunity came up. Jim is even worst than I as in researching anything and everything about the Arolik. We're both backpackers and have spent a lot of time in the wilderness. Two nights ago we had a two hour conversation about the river, as I did most of the listening. I swear, he just about relived last years trip on the Arolik over the phone. I asked him about a later date, but he told me the first two weeks of July are sensational for Kings. Later on during the weeks, heading into August it starts to dry out, even the hatch changes. I trust his judgement in setting up the best times to hit the river since we're paying for the trip. -tom |
Arolik River Alaska (questions)
Tom, I've been to the Arolik the last two summers. Once in late July,
once in late August. Niether trip were bears much of an issue at all. This last trip we did in late August for Silvers, we didn't see any. But the river was high and most carcasses were washed away. I think the bears were out hunting berries. More bear action during the king run when the water is lower. The bears are hunted so they shy away from humans very quickly from my experience. Definatley take appropriate firearm(s). I've done three trips with PaPa Bear. Steve & the crew there, are great. PS this is my first time here at this forum. -Tim Bermingham Tom Nakashima wrote: Has anyone here fished the Arolik River, Alaska? I met Steve at the Sportsman Show in San Mateo, CA. last weekend. Sometimes you get a feel for people, whether they're there to take your money or offer an honest trip. I got good vibes from Steve, very knowledgeable about fly-fishing Alaska. I'll be going with Jim O who fished the Arolik last year and has the river down pretty well, but as you know fishing is a hit or miss. Jim is also a law enforcement officer and did pack a peace to stop a grizzly. -tom |

I've been to Alaska a couple of times (2004 and 2005), as well as Kamchatka (that has more and bigger bears), and have never come even close to having trouble with them. In 2004 I was surrounded by them - upstream, downstream, and on both banks of Margot Creek. The guide talked to them and we walked by them without any troubles. I am told, by several people, that more people die from wild dogs in Alaska than bears. If you do not startle them, i.e. come upon them by surprise, they will keep their distance. If you see one, just start talking to him/her. "Hey, bear" is a good opener. d;o) Go to: http://hometown.aol.com/davplac/Alas...humbnails.html for some pix of bears and fish taken on Moraine, Margot Creeks, and the Kamishack River, all in the Katmai area of Alaska where the bears are very prevalent. BTW, if your friends shoots a bear, he had better hope he kills it with the first shot, because otherwise he will have a very ****ed off bear to deal with. No guides that I know of carry weapons while fly fishing. Dave |

On the pack trips I've done in the Bob Marshall (grizzly country) the wranglers packed a shotgun. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

The bears I've seen in Alaska (100+ in 04, and about 80 last year) are used to seeing humans. Most were juveniles (3-4 years old). The guides even scared a sow and her 3 cubs off of a sand bar island that we used for a rest/meal stop on the Moraine. This year, a lard ass male came within 30 feet of me and walked past without giving me a nod or a how-do-you-do. He weighed in at about 700 pounds. Big ass sob. No juvie there. The lodge that I stay at has never had a bear incident in all the years they have been there. The thickest I have seen them was on Margot Creek at the beginning of the Valley of 10,000 Smokes. Almost every time I caught a rainbow or dolly, a bear would come and take over the hole. They were after the Sockeye who were on the spawn. All spawning salmon are prey for the Alaskan Brown. Silver, Chum, Kings, Sockey, Humpies are all consumed during their spawn. They eat only the skin, brain, and sex organs during the summer, but as the fall begins to set in, they eat the entire fish. In areas where they aren't hunted, they aren't afraid of people and in areas where they are hunted, they're likely to be afraid of people. Before I went on our float last year on the Kanektok, I was troubled by the images I had seen on TV, in movies, magazines, etc. that commonly show Grizzlies in close proximity to anglers. I thought I would be comfortable dealing with them during the day but felt that every noise I heard at night would freak me out and keep me awake. I brought along earplugs for that reason. Although we saw LOTS of fresh bear sign at virtually every place we stopped to fish, the only bear we saw on our float last year ran off as soon as it saw us. The bears in the area of the Kanektok avoided contact with people. The area where Dave saw all the bears is an area that isn't hunted. The Arolik area is hunted both by natives and licensed hunters. If they didn't have the fish to eat, I personally wouldn't be so cavalier about fishing next to a 700 lb. brown bear. YMMV, JT |

As he came toward us, we talked to him and retreated up the bank. The last thing you want to do, btw, is to panic and run. That could set them off, and you'll lose. Talk to them, give way and let them pass (or fish). There have been very few bear/angler incidents where the angler was attacked. MMAV Dave |
