Last week, I went through a blizzard. Today, we had some more fun, a
tornado touched down a little bit (less than a quarter of a mile) north
of me. The ironic thing is that yesterday was the state-wide tornado
drill. Spent a half an hour in the basement where I work. Today, as
the fence behind me blew down, I bailed out of the hotel room (second
floor of a two story building) and ran across the parking lot to the
hotel lobby. The room I was in was shaking too much.
Get me THE HELL OUTTA HERE!!!

That's what I said every day I woke up in Dodge City. But when I went to
Kansas I had no concept of living on the plains, You've been there before
and still you wanted to go back.. I trust when you buy your new home, it
will have a basement?

Full walkout basement for Brenda's quilting studio and a place where I
can put my head between my legs and kiss my ass goodbye.
We still on for Saturday evening on the 8th? Just firmed up my
schedule today.

We're on. Tell me what you won't eat and which flavor malt. I'll drop
directions in an email. I assume you'll be coming in from I-70?

Hmm, not much that I won't eat. After all day in the car with the dog
and cat, I may be ready to BBQ them. I'll bring some Yuengling.
I -70 it is.
Cheers.

I spent the first 15 years of my life in the mid-west ( Kentucky, Ohio,
Indiana, Iowa .. we moved a lot, one of the reasons I grew up non-social )
and my most vivid childhood memories are all about the weather

My family lost 2 cars to trees falling on them, I came home from school to
find the TV exploded all over the living room from a lightning strike, the
hours spent each year in the basement with the adults trying to seem calm,
and, oh yeah the twister that took the roof off the place next door, but
barely scratched our house. That house had a detached garage on the alley
and the house roof was dropped arched over it like a second roof, I can
still see it in my mind.

Get one of those weather alert monitor deals and keep it turned on.

Well, we're getting ready for round two. Look at the size of this band
of storms coming in.

Weather is a wonderful thing. I grew up in Los Angeles and we didn't
have any weather there (big storm would drop a quarter of an inch).

I've heard it said that the difference between southern California and here
(wherever here may be) is that THEY have a climate.....WE have weather.

Yes, and right now, I'm thinkin' a bit of global climate change might
not be a bad thing. 'Specially if it occurs in the next hour or so.

I lived in Kansas for 35 years and saw a number of tornadoes up too close. Once
I got briefly picked up by one in a Corvair (Nader was right about that,
anyway), and another time I saw one hit a turkey farm across the highway from
where I worked. Who says turkeys can't fly? One thing they can't do is land,
though, and about 400 were killed.

When we were kids and a siren went off my folks would send us to cover and then
go outside to see if they could see one. g

Absolutely - gotta be one of the best TeeVee episodes ever. I wish WKRP reruns
were still on the tube somewhere.

There's a humor author by the name of Terry Pratchett. My favorite
character of his is Rincewind the Wizzzard. Rincewind has a 10th
degree blackbelt in running away and an equally incredible skill with
getting out of trouble. Don't bother looking back, just run like hell
till you can't hear the crowd with the torches behind you and then
continue running for another hour after that. That works for me. When
there's something coming at me thats big, bad and could care less about
my feelings, I'm gonna do a Rincewind.

That reminded me of the Firesign Theatre line, "There's hamburger
all over the highway in Mystic, CT". Interestingly enough, last week a
truck going through Austin wrecked and spilled ground beef all over the
interstate. It was treated as toxic waste.

Rincewind is so fun. But in "Last Continent" he winds up not only a
hero, but known as a hero. He'll probably be back to normal soon,
though. I particularly like it when he's paired up with Cohen the
Barbarian. His attitude toward life is quite sensible, particularly
given his history.

Did that bear make it through hunting season alive?
