Question about Eyesight?

I've getting at that age where I either have to hold my lure 2-feet away
from me to thread my line through a lure's eyelet, or tilt my head down and
look over the top of my glasses. Yeah, yeah, I know they make bifocals,
just fighting that last step.

But my real question is to those that have gone through or are going through
this step in life. I am also noticing I'm loosing a little depth perception
too. I'm missing targets only by a hair, but missing them none the less.
When pitching, I'm not stopping the lure quick enough, resulting in a splash
vs a wave. It's like my depth perception is off just a little. Did you
experience this as well when the old eyes started giving out on you, or do I
need to go to a eye doctor?

Question about Eyesight?

You can adjust if you keep up with the correct prescription in your glasses.
If you don't take the appropriate steps there isn't much you can do when
things aren't exactly where you see them.

My dad had this happen when his eyesight started to change. It really threw
off his billards game until he started keeping up with his prescription.

Question about Eyesight?

yes, Craig, I noticed a change in depth perception. I have a slight
astigmatism --- the eye Dr says I really don't need eyglasses, but wrote
me a mild prescription. Regardless of what he says, the glasses make a
huge difference while ready and tying.

Before you go bi-focal, check out the flip down magnifiers they sell to
fly fisherman for $20. Try orvis.com

The transitional are the way to go. They take some getting use to, but if
your eyes are anywhere like mine, I have several distances I'm out of focus.
When I talked to my doctors about my aches and pains, I told him. "If this
if a preview of the golden age, I don't think I like it". His response was,
"Well it beats the alternative". Can't argue with that.

Question about Eyesight?

I got a pair of the transitional bifocals a year ago. It took about a month
for me to get used to them. Now, I don't even notice I'm wearing them unless I
find myself in a situation where I need to look at the ground to keep from
falling -- say I'm clambering down a steep incline. In that particular
situation, the bifocals are dangerous because -- unless you hold your chin to
your chest and look out the TOP of the lenses -- the ground and your feet are
blurred. In that situation, my solution is to push the glasses up on my
forehead and just use my uncorrected vision.

I guess the point is that a single correction method dosent' work for everyone,
but that the transitional lenses work for me. Rich -- sorry they didn't work
for you.

While we're on the subject of eyesight, does anyone have experience with the
latest sunglasses that adjust their tint according to the available light?
Does anyone know if they're available in polarized lenses?

Craig--- I also had the same problem but found that by going to hi vis line
that I am able to keep eye contact with my line and can better control
distance.I guess I give some advantage back to the bass because if I can
see the line better so can he ..I couldn't tie my shoes without my bifocals
much less tie on a hook

No. I've had enough surgeries that are non-elective. I wouldn't ever

so why bother?

Bob Rickard May 10th, 2004 10:43 PM

Question about Eyesight?

I remember back in '97 when I was on Kincaid Lake in Southern Ill. with my
brother in law, Mac. I had cataracts formed in both eyes at the same time.
The insurance company wanted to wait as long as possible before the
operations in hope that I would drop dead first & spare them the expense.
Anyway, we were beating the banks as always, which were nothing but blurs to
me.

Out of consideration to Mac, I was throwing nothing but weightless,
Texas-rigged worms to increase the hope that my casts would somehow make it
back to the boat without serious snags. Mac helped a bunch by warning me
when I was aiming at trees or other hazards. It stunk, but it was still
better than no fishing at all.

BTW, cataract operations are the greatest things that ever happened. No
problems since.

Craig,

Transitional bifocals are heartbreakers...they solve some problems but create
others...like some of the other guys have said. It is really scary trying to
walk down an incline, because focus and depth perception are very closely
related and both will be out when you do that. Also, you can't just turn your
eyes to look at things. Most likely whatever you want to see will be out of
focus, unless you turn your head and look through the middle of the lenses,
instead of the edge.
I have worn them for 3 or 4 years now and have just accepted the limitations. I
have single vision sun glasses, and while that is fine for just keeping the sun
out of my eyes....causes real problems trying to cast a lure, hit a golf ball,
etc.
Old eyes just suck...but sure beats not having vision for sure!
