Happy 99th birthday John--sorry you are not here to enjoy it.My tribe still
remembers you coming over that hill, a pistol in one hand, a rifle in the
other, a yellow rag around your neck and that damm dog barking. My squaw
thought your horse was especially tender.

Hell--it makes as much sense as most of the posts on roff.

Well, unlike you I don't live in Joe's head.....or in abject terror of him.
He may have wanted to stir up some ****, I suppose. On the other hand, he
may have been offering a wry comment at what seemed to be an auspicious
moment.....something you will never understand, so don't strain anything
trying. If the former, he did so in the certain knowledge that he'd snag

several occasions down in North Carolina. He's never impressed me as being

Exactly. The sad thing is that Wayne did not benefit fully from those
credentials. For example, if he were younger he could now be our President,
or Vice President . . . like Cheney has done with the same credentials. Or
he could have parlayed his war experiences like Raygun did, when he shot
down all those Japanese Zeros in "Hellcats of the Navy," or liberated that
concentration camp in Germany.

Joe is far from being ignorant or a fool. He's as amicable, gregarious,
and fine a friend and traveling fishing partner one could hope to have.
Like many of us, he'd readily admit having been in his cups on
occasion; still, even in his most drunken state I'd rather listen to
hours of Joe's conversation and life stories than hear a self-admitted
asshole like fortenberry exhale a single, sober breath.

I saw an interview with Gene Autry once. He would say anything bad
about John Wayne but the interviewer ask him why he didn't make more
war movies like John Wayne. He said there was only one thing a man
could do, if he didn't he would have to "shave in the dark the rest of
his life". Autry was a pilot and flew the hump, passing up the big
bucks for a few years.
