What do fly fishers like?
Hello all,
I'm in the process of creating a website whose purpose is to help people do nice things for each other. Many times, you want to do something for someone, but all you know about them is that they are interested in a particular hobby or activity that you don't know much about. I'm collecting information about as many different hobbies as I can. So...two questions. 1. What do fly fishers like/need/want? I'm looking for a list of things that someone else could pick out for you that you would really enjoy receiving. This can include items, gift certificates to particular stores, magazine subscriptions, books, favors, trips to events, etc. Anything that you would find useful and/or desirable in your capacity as a fly fisher. These don't have to be "bought" items. If you really need lots of empty egg cartons, put it on the list! 2. If I was married to a fly fisher, and wanted to better understand what they are talking about over the dinner table without actually becoming a fly fisher myself, what books or websites should I look at? Any information would be appreciated by myself and likely by the families and friends of many fly fishers! The guys over in the woodworking newsgroup did a great job on their page. I have high hopes for the fly fishers! :) If you want to see what the results look like, click on any of the links on this page under Find Out What They Like: http://www.spousalsponsorship.org/pages/index.html |

Do you like stuff from there or is that to far towards camping? |

"NiceTo FlyFishers" wrote... 1. What do fly fishers like/need/want? Bamboo rods are usually a good gift idea; Phillipson, Granger, or a custom short lite rod, like a 6' 2wt are good choices. Also fly tying materials, especially those essential but hard to get items, like albino wombat belly fur, size 32 no-see-um hooks, or a mating pair of jungle cocks. Or better yet, a jungle cock and a jungle hen. And you can never go wrong with a bottle of single malt scotch. As a general rule of thumb, the older the flyfisher, the older the single malt needs to be. Also, there is a long history of flyfishing literature; an autographed first edition of "A Treatyse of Fysshinge wyth an Angle" by Julian Berners would be a welcome addition to any anlers library. The second most revered volume among flyfishers is "To Hell with Fishing" by Ed Zern, as it is filled with profound wisdom and sage advice. One thing you don't want to give a flyfisher is a new hat; you don't want to touch his old hat, probably not even with rubber gloves 2. If I was married to a fly fisher, and wanted to better understand what they are talking about over the dinner table without actually becoming a fly fisher myself, what books or websites should I look at? Best bet is just to realize that anything a fisherman is saying about his fishing trip is either a lie or a damn lie, and just nod your head and smile as if you actually believed any of it. You could try reading "The Dry Fly and Fast Water" by George LaBranche, after a few chapters of which you will come to understand that your flyfisher is totally insane, obsessed with outsmarting a fish that has a brain the size of a dry pea, and having a somewhat difficult time of it. The flyfisher spends his day up to his flask in a chilly stream, using a $1000 stick to tangle his $60 line up into some branches, emitting noxious fumes from his pipe and his waders, while imbibing more single malt than is appropriate for a Sunday morning, and after hours of tangling his line, falling in the stream, and using a stream of vocabulary that would make the very devil blush, he finally catches a fish, and lets it go. What's not to understand? -- Timothy Juvenal www.tjwoodworking.com |

Orvis is a word that can generate quite a thread around here. That's beacause some of their stuff is very good, some overpriced, and all generally marketed toward "sports" (wealthy neophytes). Still, some Orvis rods I've seen are as nice as any anywhere, and they have good resale value. I'm more of a local flyshop guy myself, great places to pick up some locally tied flies, other stuff your gonna buy anyway. I figger if they don't have, I prolly didn't really need it anyway. www.flyfishersparadise.com http://paflyfish.com/xoops/html/index.php www.cortlandline.com www.cabelas.com Personally, I like Cabelas a lot more than Orvis. I'm collecting information about as many different hobbies as I can. So...two questions. Actually, though I have no spousal unit, nor a *partner,* just a part-time canine unit, I think your website is a pretty good idea. Like Sandy said though, "Buying equipment for fly fishermen is a little like buying clothes (especially for women), where only the recipient really knows what they want." What is really needed for the flyfisher with spousal unit/*partner* is the go ahead to buy what he or she needs/wants, without a bunch of fuss. If you could somehow incorporate into your website a "YES BOX" with amounts that are ok for the flyfisher to spend, now that would be a real coup! However, short of the above suggestion, most avid flyfishers either know what they want/need, or they know where to go to get what they want/need and simply post their request on the refrigerator door for approval. Unfortunately, for those flyfishers with spousal units/*partners,* the approval is the hardest part to achieve--or so I've been told, not having the requisite spousal unit/*partner.* Thanks for the thought though! Op --oh yeah, if you are truly getting into flyfishin' yourself, stick around here for great info on anything related to flyfishin', politics, social movements, religious debates, loving discussion, hateful replies, antagonistic and protagonistic arguments, bear protection, the definitive word on C&R or C& K....-- |

If you don't practice the same hobby yourself, it's really difficult to pick well. Even if you do, it's pretty tricky. That is actually what this site is about. Providing a list of good bets that the receipient will really enjoy, rather than just wasting money on another "I Heart Fishing" paperweight or a "Fly fishing kit" that contains nothing you want or need. Permission is indeed the ultimate form of spousal sponsorship. I am currently building a way for someone to use the site to create and print a customized Permission Certificate. This will be available from all the pages. Eventually, there will also be a registry where you can list everything you want from wherever you want it and your sponsor can choose to get it for you or to mark it "Approved" so you know you can go and get it. However, short of the above suggestion, most avid flyfishers either know what they want/need, or they know where to go to get what they want/need and simply post their request on the refrigerator door for approval. Thanks for the thought though! The ideal gift that a non-flyfishing woman can give her flyfishing husband (or partner or whatever), IMO, is the freedom to go fishing whenever and wherever he wants, with whomever he wants, with no nagging or complaints. In general, I tend to like so-called "chick flicks." My spousal unit, however, thought the movie was ****. A discussion group would be extremely interesting. Nothing is more fascinating, IMO (including flyfishing), than trying to figure out how women think. It's mostly a futile exercise, but every now and then there's a breakthrough. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

For fly fishers who are also woodworkers, building a fishing boat can be a major source of pride, accomplishment, anxiety, sore back, heartache and pleasure, even joy at times. Every boat builder loves the crowd of oohing and aaahing onlookers that happen every time you put your homemade wood or wood/fiberglass boat in the water. ....."wow, where did you get that boat?" http://montana-riverboats.com http://www.montanaboatbuilders.com/kitsplans.htm http://raysriverdories.com/wooden_boatkits.html http://gregboats.com http://www.dhdriftboats.com/index4.html |

OK, here's the hard one. There's one more thing I'd like from you guys, if I can get it. I'm even wiling to bribe you for it. :-) This is normally a two-parter, but Hambone Slim won the first part out of the gate. (Your $10 Cabela's gift cert will be coming shortly, Hambone Slim.) I would love to have a paragraph or two from one of your spouses, partners, significant others or non-flyfisher friends about what it's like to live with a flyfisher or a story about the things they love you in spite of. If you look at the Chocolate page or the Antique Tractor Pulling page, you'll see these near the top of each page. If anybody wants to come up with this, I'll send you a $10 gift certficate via email from Cabela's or the place of your (or their) choice that offers $10 gift certificates. If you don't want to post it here, you can send it to me via email. If you want it on the page anonymously, fine. If you want credit and/or a link to your site, also fine. Any takers? |
