Checked out some new water today.
I've been hearing some good things about a flowage (reservoir) north of
Rhinelander for quite a while and finally decided to check it out. Gil and I had a day off together, no one had anything going on so we decided to head north and see if the reality was as good as the reports. We got on the water around 11:00 and fished it till 6:00. The weather really wasn't the greatest, around 40 and threatening rain. It finally warmed up to 51 degrees, with the water temps in the mid to upper 50's. This body of water is awesome, 14,326 acres according to my Fishing Hotspots map. There's tons of submerged timber, stumps, rocky shorelines and sand/gravel. It looked like it should hold a fish or two. We ended up boating over a dozen smallmouth, I got cut off by a couple muskies and had a nice muskie in the mid 40 inch class chase a spinnerbait to the side of the boat. We took pictures of some of the fish caught today. I've never seen smallie as deep in the body as these were. Good Lord, they were solid and strong. I wish we had lakes like that in Southwestern Ohio. Maybe I need to move
North. :-) Those were some very nice fish. I only have caught one 4" smallmouth in my life. And that was when I was salmon fishing in Manistee last year with a 3/4 oz. little cleo spoon. There is something weird about those fish Steve, I think the bass have been

I'm not doing anything until the 31st of the month. I know, it mated with a Pontiac. You know, Wider is Better.... I've caught a lot of nice smallmouth bass in my time and I've never seen any with as deep of a body as the fish in this lake. The one pictured is exceptionally deep, but all of the fish were like that. I can't wait until the fish get really active, and I know my way around the lake better. We probably covered less than 1% of the total water in 6 hours, so I can only imagine that there's other places that are even better! I know a guy that lives on the lake that is a die-hard walleye angler. He told me that if I promised to remove some of those $$%*%^@ smallmouth, he'd show me where to fish the lake. He was complaining that the smallies have been pushing his walleyes off some of his favorite spots. He told me that he can't get a bait rig to the bottom on some of his favorite locations before some blankety-blank smallmouth grabs the bait! But it's got such a bad reputation as a hull cracker and lower unit eater, I purposely stayed off the lake until I couldn't stand it any longer. While I do want people to catch fish, I don't want anyone's boat damaged, or worse, someone hurt or killed. While I was on the lake, I never went over 30 mph and I was sweating bullets the entire time I did that! Plus, this lake is an hour+ from Rhinelander, that means no Rhinelander Pub & Cafe, No Al-Gen Friday night fish fry.
