Spinning reel for bass

I am looking to replace my current spinning reel and would appreciate any
recommendations. The reel will be mated with a 6'6" Avid M rod and be used
mainly to fish plastics (Senkos and Tubes).

Thanks

I have had decent luck with the Shimano Symetre (I have 2 of them), but for
close to the same price I like the Daiwa Whisker SS 1600 (I have 4 of this
one) much better. I seem to get much longer casts with light baits. My
Pfluegers spinning reels all seem to be falling apart and I felt like I
kinda got a rash of attitude from them about a bad handle design under
warranty when I contacted them. In fact I contacted them on a couple of
occasions and came away unsatisfied both times.

Daiwa and Shimano have both treated me much better.

My favorite spinning reel for a ML to Medium Heavy rod is a Shimano
Symetre 2500. I have never used a better reel, and that includes a
Stella (I hated it because of the lack of a back reel!).

I know a friend of my swears by the Shimano Stradic, and another swears
by Okuma.

I'd get a Shimano Stradic or Diawa Capricorn (do they still make them?).
St. Croix has their own reel made by Diawa; I have two of them and they've
served me well over two years.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better reel to go with that rod than the
Shimano Stradic 2500. I know, I have two of them and they've proven to be
very smooth, extremely durable reels. My clients and I beat up on them
pretty hard in a year and they're still as smooth as the day I took them out
for the first time. All I've done is clean and lube them once or twice a
year.

A pretty darned good reel for the money, and my second choice would be the
Shimano Sahara series.

If you care to spend a tad bit more I like the Shimano Substain but the
Stradic is a very good choice too.

Stradic is, no doubt, a better reel than Shimano's Sahara. I've used Steve's
Stradic, and I liked them, but I couldn't tell any difference between that
and the same size Sahara, which is just a little more than half the cost. My
experience is the more they cost, the faster they sink when I lose my grip
on a wet, cold day, or when I open a rod locker an plunk a rod and reel over
the side.

Many great reels out there today... worlds better than twenty or thirty
years ago for the same price, considering inflation. Probably more important
than the brand is the size. I wouldn't go bigger than the 2500 Shimano. A
couple reels from different manufacturers I have in the 3000 range feel too
big.

I wholeheartedly agree Joe. The Stradic is a great reel, and I own two, but
I also own 5 or 6 Sahara reels. While I haven't compared sink rates, I do
know that the 2500 is definitely the largest reel I'd use for bass fishing.

Agreed Chris, I have 2 of them and you could not ask for to much of a
smoother reel. The cost is the big downfall as you said, but worth it I
think if you fish a lot.

I'm not certain about sink rates but the probability of knocking the Stradic
over the side vs. the Sahara is much greater. This of course increases
exponentially and inversely to the age of your fishing partner, particularly
if it's a neice/nephew. I've also noticed that said relatives' reflexes to
catch anything belonging to you knocked over the side significantly decrease
when compared to anything that belongs to them knocked over the side. I
think over the long haul the Stradic will hold up better than the Sahara,
even if they're both sitting on the bottom of the lake corroding away.

Very good thoughts there, Mike. This might make an interesting doctoral
dissertation... a study of motivation and its effects on fishing tackle
retrieval.

I've been happy with my Shimano Sedona. They still make it?
