fisherman. He mentioned that the best fly to have in your box for this time of year would be Mickey Finns, sizes 4-10. Will start tying now. Frank Reid |

Far be it from me to argue with a native born U.P. fly fisher (a rara avis indeed, in my experience) and I tied the first of what will be at least a dozen Mickey Finns myself last night (to be continued this evening after a visit to the Reinke Brothers to stock up on more hooks, bucktail, ziplock bags, plastic bottles, and whatnot), but don't neglect the other flies I mentioned to you. Um......well, you can pass on the Pass Lakes......I've got about three dozen. :) Elk hair caddis, in particular, are worthy of your attention. Roger's confirmation, earlier today, that the ehc is the crown jewel in the Scandanavian arsenal of anti-trout weaponry came as a welcome reminder that the dozen I tied earlier this week will by no means be sufficient to assure peace of mind for a week in the land where a boy can't take a **** without hitting a trout. Truth be told, my admittedly scandalous love affair with the Pass Lake has as much to do with durability and a lifetime supply of fine black chenille as it does with its indisputable efficacy, and is of relatively recent vintage. Well, recent in terms of fish caught, as opposed to wasted years in an urban setting, anyway. Prior to moving to Milwaukee (which is to say back in my trout-bum years) I caught more fish (trout and/or otherwise) on ehcs than on all other flies (including, if only barely, Pass Lakes) combined. Hm......think I'll tie up another couple dozen this weekend. What else......oh yeah, none of my local vendors has any peacock sword. If you (or anyone else we expect to see) has the time to tie up some Spruce Flies, I'm sure we could work out an equitable arrangement of some sort. I don't remember whether I mentioned Royal Coachman streamers. I should have. Hornbergs.......don't forget those. Checked Weather.com this morning. Ten day forecast for Marquette says showers, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hmph.....what the **** do they know? Anyway, trout LIKE water......right? Let's see.......um......oh yeah if you can (I haven't checked), it would be a good idea to get your Michigan fishing license (and don't forget the trout stamp) online before arrival.....this will save a precious hour or so. The nearest trout stream is less than a mile from the airport......Marquette is 15 or so. O.k., that's all.......for now. Wolfgang um......oh yeah, you're living in iowa, right? have you checked with tsa about bringing a suckling pig as carry on? :) |

um......oh yeah, you're living in iowa, right? have you checked with
tsa about bringing a suckling pig as carry on? :) I'll bring the NEBRASKA pig if you bring a sleeping bag for me. By the way, if the TSA has seen any Monty Python, they may confiscate it. Then again, I could smuggle the pig in my sleeping bag and tell them I got breakfast at IHop. I've been tying some micky finns, black nose dace, Electric Goats, and assorted other streamers. Never fished streamers much, so want to try some on this trip. By the way, need body color, wing color, and size of the standard caddis up there this time of year. I've got a bunch of Tom Littleton's Coyote Uglies. That's my favorite caddis. Just want to get the color right. Frank Reid |

Well, technically, John is bringing your sleeping bag......but only because I threatened to take up my Westconsin/U.P. travelogue where we left off last year, but what the hell, pork is pork, ainna? By the way, if the TSA has seen any Monty Python, Judging by the sense of humor I've seen them display, I'd say there are two chances.....slim and fat. they may confiscate it. Well, I've never seen a greased pig.....in an airport. Take pictures.....LOTS of pictures! :) Then again, I could smuggle the pig in my sleeping bag and tell them I got breakfast at IHop. Yeah, that would account for the smell......and the sounds could easily be mistaken for some sort of gastrointestinal distress. I've been tying some micky finns, black nose dace, Electric Goats, and assorted other streamers. Never fished streamers much, so want to try some on this trip. Oddly enough, I've had some truly awesome days fishing streamers on U.P. streams that I could never match anywhere else. This COULD be explained by the fact that I pretty much gave up on intensive streamer fishing after discovering that I could actually catch fish fairly consistently with dries, but the streamers have nevertheless continued to serve me well when I trot them out up there. I know I've mentioned it here before, on several occasions, but I really do get a kick out of watching trout come up out of the water and then diving DOWN onto my fly. It doesn't happen all the time, but the expectation is, in itself, enough to keep me dragging streamers through those streams. By the way, need body color, wing color, and size of the standard caddis up there this time of year. The fact is that I've used just about every combination of wing and body color imaginable......and I've never noticed any difference in performance......size, too. These days, I work with 14s.....whatever dubbing comes readily to hand.....and the lightest elk hair I can find, for visibility. You can't go wrong with tan/olive/gray dubbing. Bleached elk will satisfy both you and the fish. I've got a bunch of Tom Littleton's Coyote Uglies. Tell me about it. I spent the better part of a day back in April with him and Mak.......um.....oh.......you mean flies, huh? :) That's my favorite caddis. Just want to get the color right. In all seriousness, I really never have noticed that it makes a difference. Wolfgang |

Tie up the Mickey Finns. Put more red than yellow in 'em. See you in a
couple of weeks. Will do. Oh, Sep 15th is the first day of ruffled grouse season (the call the "parkers"). I think I'll take the other bits of yellow, or international orange, and wear it. Maybe I'll get my daughter's Syracuse fleece. Frank Reid |

See, this is precisely the sort of thoughtless crap that is ruining this place. It could take my hard-won reputation weeks to recover from this little fit of unprovoked praise! :( Anyway, if my research these past few weeks is any indication, we're going to see some streams this time around that will make us forever rue the time we wasted on that last jaunt. guess i need to begin thinking about packing...anyone located the closest fly shop to the marquette airport? Well, if it's just flies you're interested in, you're going to be sitting next to the best fly shop you're likely to encounter for an hour or more twixt Detroit and Marquette. When you guys touch down, I'll create a diversion and you and John can dry gulch him at baggage claim. If there's anything else you need, I've found indications of fly shops of some sort in Marquette but none of them has their own web presence, so I can't tell you much about them. Wolfgang |

In the early days, I used to tie caddis on everything from 22s to 4s. Over the years, and quite without any conscious plan, I slowly wittled the selection down. These days I rarely use anything but 14s. Bodies are sparsely dubbed, and a I use very fine copper wire, counter-wound to protect the hackle. This has made them much more durable without significantly affecting their bouyancy. Wolfgang |

Something that most of us intuit at one level or another, I guess......but sound advice that needs to be stated explicilty from time to time. How ironic though, that so many of us take to the air so readily these days to rush off to what's left of the edges. This is a bit lower than it was when John and I left here last year for the inaugural UPYERS. In fact, it's just about what the price was in Baraga, on the res, and 10-20 cents lower than everywhere else we went in the western U.P. If we pool our financial resources (which, if you think about it, are bound to be considerably more substantial than our collective wits) we should be o.k. Meanwhile, it begins to look as if we may not have to mug Frank after all. I've been tying like a madman for the past three weeks......THIS TIME, I've been telling myself, I WILL NOT arrive (after ten months prior notice) bereft of useable bugs and be reduced to rifling my friends' fly boxes while they are off in the outhouse.....um.....though I guess I WILL kinda miss the adrenaline rush. Anyway, I've been enveloped in a dense cloud of fur, feathers, yarns, floss, chenille, wire, pointy steel and whatnot for about 21 days. Sensibly, I think, I paused briefly today to swamp out the car and begin looking for the spoor of various bits of camping and fishing gear. What should present itself to my startled and decidely bemused gaze? About fifteen fly boxes that I haven't laid eyes on for the last twelve or thirteen years! Hoo boy! Even BEFORE Wayne, Bill and George arrive, we're going to be in possession of more fishooks than existed in all of Michigan (well, what would become Michigan, anyway) prior to the 16th century C.E.!
