Broken rod help
In trying to remove a reel stuck on my sage xp 5-weight, I forced it
and ended up bending the (not sure what it's called) ring that screws up to hold the reel onto the rod. Any suggestions for how I can fix this... or, if it's not something I can do myself, where I would get it fixed? Thanks. |

I bought it from a rod builder on ebay... so I'm guessing that Sage
won't cover it, will they? (The builder himself has not replied to any of my emails.) G. J. Z. wrote: the factory might fix it under warranty wrote in message oups.com... I have to admit, I'm a little nervous about boiling my (relatively)
expensive rod. Is this pretty safe, and is gluing the rod back together fairly straightforward? |

Two suggestions: First, ask around among the local fishermen and see if there is someone in your area that repairs and/or builds rods. Nearly every area where there is decent fishing will have one or two. Second, how badly is the ring bent? If you can get a small brass hammer, you might be able to tap it back into shape, at least well enough to engage the threads and lock the reel. I'm assuming the reel seat is uplocking, so the ring is at the rear, away from the rod. |

You shouldn't have to ask around too long to find someone who does a bit of rod building. I had a problem with one of the eyes on my rod... I'm not so good at storing them safely through the winter. I was just going to bend it back in place and throw on some epoxy. Glad i found someone who has some rod experience, I was probably about to screw the whole rod up... and it only ended up costing me $15 to have it fixed right. hr a href="http://www.fly-fishing-flies.com" Get the best fishing flies/a from .45 cents! hr |

Before boiling your reel seat, drop over to www.rodbuilding.org and do a search on this subject. You'll find many replys to your exact question. Boiling your reel seat may be a bad idea depending on what the seat insert is made from. Jeff |

Tom Littleton wrote: another relatively nearby possibility for repair work might be Bruce Fisher. Check out www.pennscreekangler.com for info. Hello, I would not boil the reel seat end of the rod. The adhesive and resign they use in high end blanks has a very low temperature break down point. I think its under 190 degrees. I'm sure at 212 it will harm the blank. If its a struble uplocking reel seat and the only thing holding the screw rings on is a small silver end cap. Then you can heat just the end cap with a lighter for about 30 seconds and it will come right off. Just pull on it with a glove so you dont burn you hand. I'll bet its only 5 minute epoxy that holds the end cap on the reel seat. If that dont work send it to the Penns clave with someone and I will fix it for you. Bruce Fisher |

Thanks so much for the info -- I'll try that with a lighter, and if it
doesn't work then I'll check in with you. Much appreciated... |
