It seems every January I get this "itch" to figure out the Montana trip.
I know Chas has planned a September gathering in Yellowstone for 2007,
but I have no idea what anyone else has in mind as well. Bruiser
(mentioned 2007 as a respite from Alaska), Willi, (conspicuously absent
and missed), John H., Are any of you western fellers doing the Montana
deal this year? If so, when?

jeff (The Slide Inn now has a Modified American Plan - room rates
increased a bit, and optional meals are $35 a day)

I'm certainly not one of the roffian regulars but I'll be in the Greater
Yellowstone area from mid-May until mid-Oct except for part of August spent
back home.

I don't know **** about fishing, but it does often seem that I have the
exact center of the currently fishless area located, if that is of value
..... and I'm always willing to share what I don't know. Contact me when you
come and I'll gladly let you know where I'm not catching much.

I'm west of you, and I plan on being in Yellowstone and/or Grand Teton all
September, so I should be there on whatever dates Chas comes up with.

Last I heard from Willi he had sent you an email and hadn't heard back (this was
in December IIRC).

I'm going to make a week-long road trip to SW MT sometime between
July and Sept, but I don't know when yet. Have dates been set
for the Yellowstone clave? Location?

i hope chas will remind us all of the dates he selected...seems to me it
was around sept 8? i think i'll have trouble making it out at that time
because of my annual october jaunt in the nc mountains. i've sorta
gotten used to july.

....and as far as the brew, it sure was rich to have a deschutes pusher
in camp. w. yellowstone was a long drive. g

the slide inn, owned by kelly and penny galloup, has a mailing address
in cameron, montana. it sits on the madison, just west of the quake lake
earthen dam and east of 3-dollar bridge. one of the great reasonably
priced (80-125 a night) places to stay in that area. kelly is a "genius"
fisherman and flytyer. he usually has a good group of kids working for
him too.

Does that, perchance, make you a source of quality local knowledge about the
Blackfeet lakes area? Spending a week or two there has been on my "to
do" list for some years and a recent roffian stillwater threadlet got me
thinking that catching some really big trout might be fun to do again for a
while. Maybe this year would be a good one .... but then, I've hit an age
where it has become very clear that 'years' are in limited supply making
them all seem like good ones to take advantage of while that supply lasts

Winter is usually a highly-OT time for ROFF. Maybe he's just
sitting it out.

Someone mentioned the lack of SJ Clave talk this year. I think
most regulars have overspent their fishing/travel budget this
year going to AK. I know I'm not available this winter for a
SJ trip. Tom, you ever visit NM?

Hopefully it'll warm up a bit in a few weeks here and I can get
out and search for some carp locally. For Christmas I got a fish
arrow and reel for my bow, so if they don't hit the fly, I'll
pull out the secondary artillery ;-)

Jon.

Kelly was ripping apart the old cabins when we left in Sept. I'm sure
they will be done by the start of the season. He did mention opening a
restaurant in the back of the shop, so it sounds like a done deal.

That really brings back the memories. Panning out a bit gives a
good view of how the new homes and cabins are being laid out
along the river -- something I wondered about while fishing.

I notice the Slide Inn's web site is down. Perhaps they're
revising it to reflect the renovations.....

Very nice. I wonder how old the photo is. I have some friends just
downstream from Kelly's place. It doesn't show the recent building they
put in. Sure would like to have the lot next door to Kelly's. A measly
800K and it could be yours. ;-)

i received my annual mailing from the slide. kelly says he has finished
the construction/renovations. eating hall is attached to the back of
the shop where the old trailer was. he's hired a chef. only his
lodgers will be able to eat in his mess hall.

I will be in the Missoula for a good friends wedding on July 21st of
2007. We are planning two weeks, and we are going to try and hit
Tetons/Jackson, as well as Yellowstone. RIght now it will be me, SWMBO,
2 year old son, and the in-laws. We will have two pop-top campers, and
hopefully as little Griswald vibe as possible.

So if you had to pick one or two places to do a guided float trip in
July, and you had to pick between, Teton/Jackson area, Yellowstone, or
Missoula, what would you pick? I hope I'm not hijacking this thread...I
suppose I should start my own, but wouldn't it be redundant? Anyway
I've been talking to Kingfisher Fly Shop in Missoula for a float trip
on my Birthday, they seem pretty cool, but I haven't decided yet.

And maybe if some ROFFians will be in the area at that time we can hook
and you can show me some nice waters...

Thanks a bunch,
-Ethan

50 miles south of Missoula is Hamilton. Book a float on the Bitterroot
out of
Hamilton. You won't regret it. It's great.

Was going to try to switch to making it an annual clave in 2007 but with all
the talk of September I'll probably have to keep to the two year schedule.
Was hoping to bring the family along for the fun (I feel guilty not sharing
the world with the boys) but Dan's already in School and Matthew is starting
Kindergarten this year so Sept. is out. There is always the outside
possibility of sneaking in at the last minute (solo), but can't make plans
for it.

You could also consider the last week in August. According to people I talked to
in the park last September, that's the least busy 'summer' week.
