Favorite fishing show
 

Just curious, what everyone's favorite fishing show? BassPro sucks now
since ESPN took over, Bill Dance only fishes where he KNOWS he's going to
catch, mostly little ponds that are heavily stocked, Hank Parker, he lost
his edge I think, it just isn't as interesting now, unless you like fishing
for Brim or Crappies, and Rollin Martin, to commercialized I think, he tries
to push to much stuff as he fishes, (Speaking of biting on frogs, here's the
Fancy Frog Rain Gear!) it's annoying. Plus, wasn't it Rollin Martin that
got busted for the Illegal fenced deer hunt?

About the only one lately that I've found that's decent or half way, is
In-Fisherman.... I don't mind them fishing for stuff other than bass, but
give me something I can relate to, in my country at least!

So what have you all been watching during the hard water season? I"m about
to take up watching Bull Riding here if it doesn't get better soon! ;)

You're right. Most of the fishing shows aren't like they used to
be. But, that's understandable since most of the hosts are either 60
or pushing it hard. They just don't have the energy they had when
they first came on. I have a Bass Pro Shop not too far away in
Jackson MS. I caught some of the Outdoor World Video Library Series
of DVD's on sale and have been watching them. Kevin Van Dam has a 3
DVD set on Pitchin', strategies for changing conditions and
spinnerbait techniques that is pretty good. I also just bought one on
Locating Spring Season Bass with Larry Nixon. Hopefully, it will
help me this spring on my new fishing home spot, the Tombigbee
Waterway in Northeastern Mississippi and Northwest Alabama.

I'm going to the Bassmasters Classic hopefully on Saturday. Plan on
spending all day at the expo and watch the weigh-ins on Saturday and
Sunday. I've never been to one, so that should be fun. Will let you
know what I think about it when I get back.

I don't watch much fishing on TV anymore, maybe I've lost interest after all
these years.

I don't know about Roland's hunting activities, but Jimmy Houston was
involved in an incident similar to the one you mentioned.

Oh yeah, Al rocks, no doubt about it! His brother, the little skinny guy,
he's pretty good too, but he's mostly muskie it seems, which is okay still.
Those things are HUGE! I remember back in the day when almost all the shows
were quality, but as another poster said, most of those guys are getting
older now, and when they did their shows, they were still competing, or had
just gotten out of it.
I did just watch another episode of BassEdge, and it's not the caliber of
In-Fishermen, but it's good too if you have that in your programming in your
neck of the woods!

Hopefully, I'll be able to get out and get some hands on here pretty soon!
It is getting warmer here, but will be a few weeks yet I'm afraid... :(

Al's brother is Ron, and he ain't a little skinny guy.

The skinny guy that's all about musky is Al's nephew, one of Ron's sons,
Jimmy Lindner. Bill and Dan are also Ron's sons. I believe Dan is full
time with the show, but mostly behind the camera. Bill is on frequently,
but runs his own photography house. Troy is Al's son, and appears
occasionally, but lives in CA, and doesn't work full time on the TV
show. (He is fishing the FLW tour in the west though)

All of them, along with Sura and Csanda are now on Lindner's Angling
Edge. For my money, they feature the BEST video and especially
underwater footage of any of the current crop of Fresh Water fishing shows.

Awesome Rich... I learnt something this morning! I never really paid that
much attention to who exactly as much as what they were doing. I know Al of
course, without a doubt and his dad, and just for some reason, I had it
locked in my head the little guy was his brother, I stand corrected. Thanks
for the info, now I know.

That would be awesome get paid for doing what they do so well!

Yeah, watching Bill Dance fish in phosphate pits or listening to
Roland Matin sell Boogie Bags and Helicopter Lures gets pretty old. I
really like Jimmy Houston but my wife leaves the room when she hears
him giggling.

For educational value, no one beats Al Lindner. The only problem is
that not all of the cable systems down here in the Deep South have
closed captioning to translate his Yankee talk into Southernese.

I Like several. One is Waters & Woods, with John Gelespie(sp). You
may not get it as it is basically a Wis/MN/MI based show. If you do
get it I recommend watching it with the sound down as John can't keep
his big mouth shut. He has good people/places on and covers all
species.

Another is Midwest Outdoors. Again an all species show.

I will watch Steve's Outdoor Frontiers TV when I can get it on my
cable system but it never has been offered on a system I have. I have
seen tapes of the show and like it.

I like the fishing show that Joe was on a while back but mainly forget
I they are on.

I refuse to watch Bill Dance. Too contrived IMHO.

Sittin here watching the kids ice skate down the road in front of my
apt in Northwestern IA. :{

People who fish is a pretty good show. Bobby n Billy what's er names run
it and its pretty good. Also the former owners of In Fishermen run a new
show called Linders Angling Edge. Far as I'm concerned Al and his brother
were the best all species magazine editors ever. They still have a pretty
decent show always featuring at least one or two segment on large and small
mouth fishing. I agree with your assessments as well. I like Billy D. but if
a sink company gave him enough $ he'd attach hooks to it, hit his favorite
closed pond and tell you what a great lure it was. ! lol

Just got back from the Bassmasters Classic. It was awesome! I went
up on Saturday. Birmingham is a little over two hours away from my
home so I didn't have to get up too early. The convention center
didn't open until 10:00.
It was like being a kid again in a candy store :-) They had
everything you could imagine in tackle and boats. Of course most of
the top fisherman were out competing in the Classic, but there were
still quite a few pro anglers at the booths answering questions and
pitching for their sponsors. Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston, Roland
Martin, Forest Woods, Guido Hibdon and Hank Parker were there signing
autographs and holding court. I had a chance to talk with Roland
Martin. I ran into him when he was in one of the tackle booths. I'm
originally from Charleston SC and we talked about fishing Santee-
Cooper. I found him very down to earth and friendly.

I spent most of Saturday looking at all the new lures and of course
buying some. Lots of great buys and of course I couldn't resist :-)
The big controversy on the second day was Gerald Swindle's
disqualification. He was one of the favorites and is well liked by
the local crowd since he is from Alabama. They let him weigh in his
fish, and he then talked about his disqualification. It was a very
emotional speech with the crowd cheering him after he walked off the
stage. Being at the weigh in was fun. Sort of like being at a
football game in some ways. The only thing I didn't like was the
large amount of reserved seating. The sponsors reserved most of the
good seating, but life-time BASS members did get some of the good
seats. I was way on the top on the left side of the stage.
Fortunately, they had two big TV screens so you could see using them.

I saw lots of families at the expo and weigh-ins. It was great to see
the kids being a part of it. They even had a Kid's Casting
competition. Lots of folks from all over the U.S. and from other
countries as well.

I think there was a lot to see and do at the Bassmaster's Classic.
I took someone's advice and spent two days. You really need to spend
more than one day there. I probably should have done it at a slower
pace because by the second day I had seen most of it. But, I did
get a chance to go to some of the seminars. Overall, I really
enjoyed going and would go again if I have the chance.

Hey Josh,

Yeah, I set up the Tivo to record the Anglers Edge here just a couple days
ago, and it is some quality programming. With the others, I understand they
have to have sponsors, but I don't understand why so many. They need paid
too, BUT there has to be another way so as to alleviate so many adds.
There's 12 minutes of fishing, and 18 minutes of commercials.
Well, on the plus side, old man spring is knocking on our door, so we'll not
have to resort to watching THEM fish here pretty soon! ;)

Sounds like you had a blast John!! Awesome!! Wish I could have been there
with you! The family life and my budget doesn't afford those luxuries just
yet though unfortunately. Someday though, someday.... Rubbin' elbows with
the stars is something you'll remember for a lifetime! Did you get any

***Bill still produces a great show. People misjudge the show because he
films on private waters. However, Bill isn't trying to show you what a
great angler he is, rather, he is trying to show tactics, techniques and
methods to make YOU a more successful angler. If you take the time to
actually listen to what he's telling you and watch what he's showing and get
over the fact that he's on private water, he really has a wealth of
information.

I too know from experience in producing an outdoor show that there's not
much that's more frustrating than to try to film a segment on public water,
only to have a pontoon boat-load of drunken idiots come cruising up asking,
"Hey! What in the hell are you guys doing? Making a tv show????" There
have been many times I too wish I had the luxury of filming on private
waters. If you understood the expense involved at producing a television
show the way Bill does, you'd understand why he doesn't want to have to do
any more re-takes than absolutely necessary. Decent videographers run
$400 - $600 a day, and ones the caliber that Bill uses run even more, and
I'm sure he's got at least two camera operators on every shoot.

***Sponsors are the name of the game, without them and product endorsements,
there won't be any television shows. However I do agree that there are
discreet ways to promote product. And no, it wasn't Roland that was accused
of hunting caged deer, it was Jimmy Houston.

***LOL, I agree that In-Fisherman is a good show, but here in Wisconsin,
people complain that there's far too many fishing shows that go after bass,
and not enough shows that target other species! You have to remember that
with a national television show, not everyone is going to agree on what is
the ideal fish species to be televised.

I covered this somewhat in another post, but here goes.

In most cases, the producers purchase air-time from the network, and the
only way to cover production costs is to sell advertising time to sponsors
and advertisers. The expenses needed to cover videographers, production
assistants, writers, directors, sound technicians, film editors, plus the
staff to actually take care of the business is tremendous without even
considering the air-time costs. These air-time expenses go up exponentially
in proportion to the number of viewers in the market. The last time I
talked to OLN (now Versus), the cost for a weekly 30 minute program was
$14,000.00 a week, just for the purchase of the air-time. I'm sure ESPN is
even higher!

And, with a relatively soft economy, plus the fact that the fishing market
has been pretty flat the past couple years means that the sponsoring
companies are cutting back on marketing budgets. So, with sponsors
unwilling or unable to pay high advertising rates, they must take on more
sponsors to cover the costs of production.

There really isn't a way to reduce the number of ads, short of charging more
for each ad spot. Then, the liklihood of selling those spots goes down!
There isn't an easy answer to the situation.

I Believe I was making a little joke, (the reason for the :-) in the
post) there had to have been over 100,000 people at the Classic, heck I
didn't see half the people I personally know by site, that attended,
much less someone I have never met.

On the corner, across from Garmin and to the side of Humingbird,, I know
why you missed us, the "Fisher Girl" booth was right next to us, and
they had some real babes working that booth :-)
