I'm going deep sea fishing!!!! Woo hoo!

Never been before and I'm considering taking my Steve Huber Custom rod and
Curado reel spooled with 50lb braid... whatcha think? Everything is included
in the trip, and I wonder if they'd let me use my own rod... it's got a hell
of a warrenty anyway.

Here's hoping that I don't get sea sick... haven't been on a boat or fishing
since last June.

I'd go with the boat rods. You don't say what you're going for, but I
wouldn't call a curado a deep sea reel. You could hook something big and
watch your nice reel explode all over the deck.

If you're susceptible to sea sickness, get yourself some antivert or some
such, and take it as directed-- which is WELL BEFORE you're in a situation
where you might get sick-- which is well before you even get near the boat.
If you have real seasickness problems, get a prescription for transderm
scop and put it on the night before.

Hi Charles,

They'll let you use your own equipment most likely, and I have no doubts
about the rods I build, but I have to ask why?

First of all, sal****er is hard on gear and you'll have to douse it down
and flush it out thoroughly when you're done. Secondly, depending on how
you'll be fishing, you might run out of line before you even hit bottom,
and finally, remember, that warranty, while it is a "lifetime" warranty,
is based on MY lifetime. Want to take bets on that? ;-p

Charles to avoid the presumption of seasickness just drink 6-8 shots of
tequila before boarding. That way know one will know if you're seasick or
not. Works every time ! :)
But again, where ya going and all that? If you are in the Gulf and no storms
it will most likely be like Priest on a windy day. I have fished out of Gulf
Shores a bunch and the worst day was during a storm with 6-8 ft. seas, fish
blood and vomit all over the deck. Now that's fishin' !

LOL, that makes two of us! Oh, I was going to tell you, get some Bonine.
It's an over the counter seasickness remedy that works like Dramamine, but
doesn't make you nearly as tired.

Tarpon are 150lb+ fish that don't tire quickly. You would do better
with a lot of other ocean fish than a tarpon with a light rod.

I hear some crews get all upset about rods spooled with braid. Might be a
good idea to take a reel with some mono on it also just in case.

Don't bring the curado, it's not made for sal****er, you will ruin your
reel. very important to take the sea sickness pills a few hours before you
go. If you have never been sea sick you won't like it. It's real bad stuff,
just ask Harry

Perhaps it's a matter of perspective, but I think tarpon tire QUITE
quickly. I've caught up to 40 pounders on fly rod in 5 minutes or so. On
20 lb leaders. Same flyrod I've used for bass and bream at home. Seen
bigger ones caught on regular heavier tackle even quicker.
They jump themselves out of energy.
I've always considered them big versions of our skipjack herring
("Tennessee Tarpon").

I've caught a few small ones on light tackle and they were pretty easy
to bring in. I also caught two that were both over 150# (according to
the guide) and they both took 40 minutes or more and he had to chase
them with the boat.

Now if you hook a 60# wahoo on a 25# rig, you have a serious fight on
your hands!

Well, that's about right for one of that size on light tackle.

I'm sure that's true from what I've heard, never caught one.
I've caught snook, barracuda, bonefish, spanish and king mackerel,
different jacks, couple of cobia. Any of them, pound for pound give a
stronger sustained fight than tarpon. And most bottom fish do too.

Heck, far as that goes, a grunt fights harder than a tarpon pound for
pound. You probably couldn't land a 150 lb grunt with an anchor winch,
just like 150lb bluegill!
