It's always bothered me that people would choose not
to do business with someone because of a difference
in political viewpoint. To me, it's like religion: if we are
serious about "freedom of speech," that freedom is
not worth much if people cannot say what they believe,
within certain bounds (defined by me, of course :-),
because they are afraid of the economic consequences
that may result.

I'm having trouble making sense of that. Anyone who is free to speak out
must expect others to be free to speak out in opposition, including saying,
"I am not going to business with you." Undoubtedly, politics, economics
and religion are closely tied; and refusing to patronize a business with an
avowed political or religious position opposite to one's own seems perfectly
reasonable to me.

For example, in my town, there is a bakery establishment that makes little
secret about the political inclinations of the owners. I know that any
contribution I make to the profit of that business will go to support
political candidates and positions I find repulsive. They are free to
advertise their opinions; I am free to spend my money elsewhere. I don't
see that as an infringement or devaluation of anyone's freedom.

I'm mostly on Greg's side here. I do agree that there can be extreme
cases, but for the most part, the only way a heterogeneous society
like ours works is through tolerance of differences. The logical
conclusion of refusing to interact with those who have differences
in the Big 3 that you mention would end up leaving each of us standing
by ourselves. Unfortunately I do see our society heading towards
self-balkanization. Not a good thing, IMO. Also IMO both extremes
on the political spectrum are just as intolerant as the other, but
IMO the left tends to not admit it as much.

I have no problem with interaction, and I think in general our society does
relatively well at allowing tolerance, discourse, and debate among disparate
viewpoints, both in the macro arena of the media as well as among
individuals on the street. I think it's a bit much to ask, however, that
that tolerance extend to financial support of positions in active opposition
to our own. If a man/business actively advocates a position whose end
result is to diminish my freedoms, I would be an idiot if I gave them my
money to help accomplish that goal. I don't think it has anything to do
with tolerance. I'll tolerate them, talk with them, fish with them, even
share a beer with them; but I won't support them financially.
