Newbie hopper pattern subject revisited

Tonight I saw a pattern in my fly tying book called a Madame-X. It
said it could be used as a hopper, and it sat low in the water (like
some here have mentioned is a "good thing"). It looked real easy to
tie (I'm in my first season of tying so easy is a good thing right
now).

Any of you used this pattern with success as a hopper?

That's a *killer* pattern during hopper season for trout - and almost any time
for panfish. Smack one of those down in any of my local ponds and something's
gonna smack it back almost immediately, and for sure with a bit of
twitching...

Yep...it is an excellent hopper pattern, and also works well with a
dropper attached.

I'm going to give up one of my secret weapons here......tie the Madam
X all in black in size 10. It probably represents a cricket, or maybe
a large beetle, I don't know. What I do know, is once the Sulphur
hatch on my home water ends in August, this becomes my #1 dry pattern.
It is especially effective in September and October, and I have even
caught a few fish on it in November. Another good late summer/ early

hook.

Oh yeah. Great little bug. Even better if you tie it ala the mad librarian,
Conan: under the deer hair wing, add a couple CDC feathers. Gives it a
little extra motion.

Another variation I like is to tie it with a few strands of kystal flash or
something similar in the tail area. Good at dusk and dawn.

Have fun,

The Madame X is a classic terrestrial pattern. Try sometime a Turck's
Tarantula, which was derived from the Madame X. It's like a grasshopper
in drag. The fish love it.

I tied up a mess o' those for a DDFS swap a few years back.
http://www.gula.org/roffswaps/detail...e=DD2001&id=18 Nice pattern, not
too tough to tie, but the getting the hair length right can be frustrating
until you get into the rhythm. (That's one of the great things about the
swaps - after tying up a couple dozen wrong , you start getting good at
doing it right.)

That is what I call a "big ugly". It works wonderfully on several
waters, east and west, that I have fished. It is especially valuable
when tying a dropper on. It floats and floats and floats. I've taken
salmon and big rainbows with it. Also, it is the fly to use when
going after carp and pan fish.

I live about 120 miles south of Calgary. I don't fish the Bow much, but
last time I was there were used a pattern called Whitlock Hopper which
was a more natural imitation of the hoppers. The explanation was that
the fish see a lot of flies, and go more for the naturals. This was some
time ago. The Whitlock hopper can be seen at
http://www.westfly.com/patterns/dry/...ckhopper.shtml

Less heavily fished streams in southern Alberta and southeastern BC are
where I have used the Madam X, and it worked well.

That was a great link. I especially like the "how to fish" info.
That would apply to any hopper pattern. I really liked the tip on
casting into a bank and letting it bounce into the river. I'll bet
that would be pretty effective. I'll copy and paste that info here in
case it would be helpful for other newbies like me:

"How to Fish
Dress the fly with floatant and use standard dry fly presentations. On
small streams, you can fish a hopper anywhere in the river, but on
larger flows you will do best to present the fly right next to the
bank. On larger rivers, the best places to cast are along the margins,
no more than 15 feet from the bank, and often only inches from the
bank. Unless you're fishing from a boat, you may find it works best to
wade into the river and cast back to the bank.

One effective tactic is to cast so the fly hits shoreside grass, then
lands in the river with a distinct plop. This mimics the natural
insect. To further imitate natural behavior, give the fly an
occasional twitch as it drifts."

I stumbled upon an easy to tie hopper pattern that is also effective.
This ROFF is a goldmine of info for newbies. Thank you everyone who

The black makes sense as a cricket. Now that you mention it, I will
also tie it in a deer hair color that matches the olive grasshoppers
where I fish, rather than the natural color suggested in my fly tying
book......or maybe I'll tie all 3 colors: natural, olive & black.

We have different size hoppers around here, so I will also match the
more common sizes. This Madame-X fly will be a great addition to my
terrestrial box flies. Happy Days!!!

This is a group the the members of which share a love of fly-fishing.
The memebers are an intelligent and interesting lot. Their combined
life experience and education makes for an interesting forum. In case
you haven't noticed they share their opinions on food, drink, travel,
cars, politics etc. etc. Were this a dull group composed entirely of
"Dumbos" these discussion would become dull and uninteresting and roff
would soon die out.
While some are missinformed ( particullary on politics ) most are
interesting. If your going to participate you need to know a little
more of the world than just the technical parts of fly fishing.
If your thin skinned or get upset because folks don't accept you as
being gods gift to flyfishing your going to have some problems.
Thats my opion as based on 12 hrs of college level psychology ( no
match book cover courses ) , 9 hrs of OBOT classes, casual reading
and just dealing with people.
Don't let the computer screen give you the red-ass, it's not good for
you.

I have no need to Google Clark, I have his e-mail address. Indeed, I
have had some very interesting, useful, and informative conversations
with him on other boards. I also follow his career a little now and
again, and I am very happy for him that he is doing well. he is also
doing very well on the salt water fly fishing scene.

He does not come to ROFF any more, or at least he does not post. Now I
wonder why that could be? Maybe it has something to do with dumb
Oakies telling people they donīt know anything about fly-fishing
because they live somewhere else?

I have no control over what people think, nor do I wish to have it.

I have never intimated or implied anything of the sort. You should

Your post is once again more or less unintelligible, and even the

If you mean Okies as opposed to Sooners it's spelled "Okies".
"Maybe it has something to do with dumb
Oakies telling people they donīt know anything about fly-fishing
because they live somewhere else?"
No, people have been telling your knowledge is presented in an
overbearing, pompus arrogant Most of use are lacking in knowledge
and experience. Not Dave or Kenny or George (GRHS) claimed to know as
much as you and they did not insist (as you do) that are or were the
last word in ff knowledge.

I was not referring to "Okies", I was referring "Oakies".

I have no control over what people think, nor do I wish to have it.

I have never intimated or implied anything of the sort. You should
avoid believing your own or other peopleīs propaganda.

Your post is once again more or less unintelligible, and even the
intelligible posts you occasionally make are often rubbish, or make no
sense.

But of course you continue to insist that you are right about
everything. That is what fools do.

Thanks again. I can't argue on that point. If there is anyone who is
an expert on fools I conceed that you are it.

Try "concede", and otherwise **** off, I will not under any
circumstances reply to you again.

Thanks again. but you don't need to verify my observations again.
It's been apparent for awhile that you ain't no poet ( or
songwriter). Speaking of singers google up Clark Reid- he seems to
be doing well these days.

It bothers me not. I feel the same way about him as some homeless bum
begging on the on-ramp.
The cause of his problems are not you, me or Kenny, he can find him in
the bathroom mirror. I hold him no ill will, just pitty.
If I wished him ill and were Gradalf armed with a majic staff able to
transform him into any creature. The worst thing of all I could do to
him would be to leave him Mike Connor.

Donīt flatter yourself dumbo, you donīt cause me any problems, you are
just a nasty ignorant little man with the capability of insulting
others on the internet. There are thousands like you. It is just a
nuisance that you happen to be here.

As for wishing me no ill will, you are just as big a liar as
Fortenberry or LaCourse. The only reason for your stupid, ignorant,
and abusive posts, is precisely because you wish me ill. You have a
severe inferiority complex, just like LaCourse, which causes you to
try and aggrandise your achievements on here, and all you can do about
it is insult and denigrate your betters.

All the engineers I know, and that is quite a few, can spell, and
write intelligible English, even the Germans!

Those psychology degrees you got filling out the cupons on matchbook
covers aren't much better than the engineering degrees, I hope you
didn't pay a lot for them.
