Spent some time at the Marlborough FF Show with my friend Bob L.,
co-owner of Las Torres Lodge in Chile. Over some steaks at a local
eatery with Bob and the owners of Lakewood , I asked about DIY trips
in the area. He sees no reason why it can't be done.

There is a trekking store in Coyhaique in Aysen Region, at the foot of
the Andes. You would fly into Balmaceda, a very small town SE of
Coyhaique. There are vehicles, including pick-up trucks, you can
rent, and maps of the local area. He thought you may be able to rent
a tent and camping equipment at either the trekking store or the
sports store in Coyhaique. Or, buy the stuff and make someone happy
when you leave. He says that camping along side the road is not
unheard of and that it is safe. There are also national parks in the
region. He says the police are very helpful and honest, unlike what
you would find in Central America (Panama, Costa Rica, Guatamala,
etc.)

There are good supermarkets in Coyhaique that also stock beer, wine,
and booze. So, your food bill should be inexpensive.

I'll be in Chile in March for about ten days, so I'll see what else I
can find out.

Pay special attention to the need to speak Spanish ... I don't and that is
my greatest fear. Certainly, your lodge/ outfitter/ guide will speak
English but I'm more concerned about communication away from 'built for
tourists' situations ... I'd 'guess' that someone with some English
would usually be able to be found and paid, if necessary, to translate in
vital situations. But if life would be impossible without Spanish or
high-priced guides, I'll have to forget the idea of Patagonia :-(

I know from my reading, that English teachers are much sought after in Chile
..... and not just for kids schools ... there are a lot of adult businessmen
that want to learn it to better function in a global economy. My kid is an
English major/ Spanish minor is the reason I've taken note of all this.....
might be a good gig for him while he's young

Other than the usual tall tales (few of fishing sadly to say) we've got The
Brothel...The Picnic...The Run for Your Life and The Wrong Way
stories....all true...

Lost 19 pounds according to the hospital scales so I'm feeling pretty
chipper...an ER in the boondocks...a medical story! They said I had
pneumonia...I think I still do and shall visit a good old American doctor if
I don't improve soon...

I can't wait for spring....
