http://wedeserveapark.blogspot.com/2...-national-park... Great - another waste of money, that we don't have that our children and their children can pay back. Silver Falls is a nice state park but hardly in the same league with Yosmite, Crater Lake etc. Ditto for Mt. St Helens. St Helens is pretty limited in what you can do there. You can drive up and look at the mountain ( about 2 days out of 5 ) or look at the inside of a cloud while trying to look at the mountain. It wasn't that interesting before the mountain blew - up, now there is even less access. I would be in favor of St Helens if they would let people hike up to and in the crater. The trouble with america today is we shield to many people from Darwins Law. To many stupid people survive and breed. |

I mean, for the money it's going to cost we could probably have a nice little war against a small village somewhere in the world where everybody doesn't hate all Americans yet. Wolfgang |

I don't really see the difference...except the feds seem to be more inclined to charge admission. For the record, you can hike to the top of Mt St Helens, you just can't enter the crater. The best view of the crater is from the top anyway. - Ken |

http://wedeserveapark.blogspot.com/2...-national-park... IF you want to spend money the Ice Age Floods Trail is a better deal. The trail is a route throug a lot of geologic features created by the Bretz floods. . Among other things they also carred the Willamette Metorite from Canada where it landed to Oregon where it was discovered. The plan is a collection of sites and interpritive centers in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. There are several good guide books out on the floods, they have pictures and GPS coordinates of some pretty cool stuff. An 800 foot high wall of water draining a lake the size of Lake Erie can create some interesting rock piles. A lot more interesting that looking into a rain cloud. Hmmh, I guess you missed the dozens (hundreds?) of miles of spectacular hiking trails all over the back country and the trail that circles the mountain above timber line as well as the possibility of climbing to the summit from the south side. Or perhaps those opportunities didn't impress you. A substantial portion of the reason people aren't allowed in the crater is safety but just as important is the desire to preserve the landscape for scientific research. I realize that might not be a potent political argument for you or the rest of the electorate but it sure means a lot to those of us that do research out there. |
