GOBBLE GOBBLE!! (OT, of course)

Happiest of Turkeydays to you all!! Tomorrow at 8am, I'm catching a ride to
the 'beach', the corrput and inefficient riverside port of Kinshasa. Then on
to a ferryboat on across the Congo river (just above the pull of some
unrunnable rapids....hope the motor doesn't conk out) and into
Congo/Brazzaville. Once through their corrupt and inefficient customs,
I'll spend the day resting, relaxing and feeling 'first worldly' in what a
magazine last year rated as the "worst city on Earth to live in or visit".
Then tomorrow night, I board some rickety old propjob for the 1 hour flight
to the coast, to the 'resort' town of Pointe Noir, home of several racial
massacres and rebel standoffs in the past 10 years. After a few days sunning
and funning, it's back to Brazzaville, then back across the river and back
here to Kinshasa on Sunday. I'm really looking forward to this, maybe I'll
get a 'Life in Congo' out of it.

Vacations just aren't what they used to be, eh? Hope you all have a fun and
foodfilling holiday. Be safe, terrorize some fish.

trip itinerary from hell snipped

Happy holiday, riverman. This year I'll be thankful I don't have to eat
stir fried caterpillars with piri-piri. Gotta go stir the chipotle glaze.

Have fun Myron, stay safe. Any chance of a turkey meal?

Man, that is SO hard to know at this point!! I forgot to order one from
South Africa last month, so I don't have one in my fridge. I suspect
Thanksgiving means exactly nothing to the folks in Point Noire, so I bet the
closest I get to Turkey is gonna be some Wild Turkey whiskey. Which, as
things go, is fine..

My weekend plans are to drive out into the frozen tundra and hunt some
pheasants. Here's hoping there's more gunfire involved with my weekend
than there is with yours.

Kevin
and a Happy Thanksgiving to the rest of y'all, too.

Good hunting! Pheasant sounds great.

The duck is defrosted, the pies baked, the chestnuts roasted and peeled.
All that tomorrow requires is a blackberry glaze for the duck as it roasts,
baking the dressing, and steaming the Brussels sprouts with chestnuts,
steaming the haricots verte, and mashing the baby Alaskan potatoes.

May you all dine well and happily and travel safely to and fro.

and to you, myron. how the hell you do what you do is far beyond me.

wayno (i mean, you could find employment easily in the mountains of north
carolina, and the only real dangers would be standing downwind of waldo in
late august and having a political viewpoint that differs from opie's...)

Really, only the former applies, as I'm not even sure if I have a point of
view politically. Not a coherent one, anyway.--

Well hell, Op, you should run for office then. You sound like
presidential material.

No chance. If the current First Occupier is any indication, Mark is way too
honest for the job....

/daytripper (I'd vote for him tho ;-)

The 'how' is actually pretty easy. The 'why' has me just as befuddled as it
does you.

Oohh, now THAT sounds tempting. The 'why' just got a bit clearer...
