Has anybody ever hired this outfit ?

I went to a San Juan 'Clave one year and the airline lost my luggage,
a couple of fly rods, vest, waders, boots, the whole shebang off on
some magical mystery tour. Luckily I was able to spend the night in
a hotel close to the ABQ airport and the airline delivered the gear
in the middle of the night averting a costly disaster.

What with post 9-11 carry-on restrictions and the rest of the folderol,
I'm wondering if something like this might be worth it.

I've not used this company, but I've been known to ship stuff ahead of time via
a tracking carrier, such as UPS, with good luck. At $95.00 (minimum for
Luggagefree), you can ship a LOT of stuff via UPS. They won't be waiting for you
at the baggage claim area, but most carriers have offices at or near the major
airports that will hold the packages for arrival.

Ken:

I usually just ship my stuff via UPS and have it delivered to the place I'm
staying. Last time I did this, I totalled up the value of everything I was
shipping, and was stunned by the total - but at least having it all
inventoried makes insurance easier.

HI Ken and all ROFFers,

I have heard of some fly fishers shipping all their tackle/eqipment two week
ahead to FL to their guide so it will be there and they don't have to deal
with it while flying.

Sense 9-11 lots of things are changing.

I shipped gear to Hawaii for a Christmas Island trip on Fed-Ex. Luggage
Free was not in business in the Nashville airport the last time I needed
shipping. I promise you I never intend to trust my gear to the airlines
again. If you use this company, please give us a report.

I'd almost be willing to bet that they just coordinate one of the standard
shipping mechanisms with the local messenger service that applies. I bet
with their shipping arrangements and volume discounts and such, that a run
of the mill consumer would have a tough time arranging this on their own as
cheaply.

And don't forget that you can't lock your checked-on bags. The TSA wants to
be able to "search" your bags and leave a little tag behind. Frankly, I
think they get their jollys by going through women's underwear.

I usually manage to get all important items as carry-on. By important
I mean all fishing gear, with possible exceptions of boots and knives
(both easily replaceable at most destinations).

I've never had any incidents about this flying domestic or from the US
(ORD and FLL), and I believe the TSA is rather consistent these days.
Pack smart, and there's 99+% chance of never letting your gear leave
your side, and I like those odds compared to handing over the holy
grail to some minumum wager on the basis of them having either a
website, brown trucks or both. If you're leaving from ORD, there's
multiple security checkpoints to choose from, so you have many tries.

Of course, there is a fairly good chance I just jinxed myself by
posting this.

I have made a half dozen trips with gear since 9/11 and have had no
problems. My expierence has been that they will let you lock your checked
luggage after it has gone through the x-ray machine. Also if you use a
SKYCAP, they can get your locked luggage through with no problem.
I pack my carry on so that I can go fishing when I get there without any of
my checked luggage..requires a seven piece rod. Only exception, is that you
cannot carry flies in a carry-on. I make sure that I have an hour or more
at each connection. I have also found that they will now let you carry a
four piece rod as your personal item. At least on Continental!
I now buy my ticket using a Citibank Mastercard that gives me $3000 of
insurance for LOST luggage. Most other insurance, including household, is
for STOLEN luggage; you have to prove that it is stolen, not misplaced.
