Apology to roff...

Would've done this sooner but my PC went to hell with a virus. (probably a
democrat virus) :-)
I herewith apologize for my unseemly behavior t'other day towards Greg
Pavlov, Scott Seidmann and Willi. After all these years in roff, I should
have known never to hit the send key with a severe case of the "redass".
Even happy-go-lucky Frank gets it every now and then. Sorry all. Someday I
hope to fish with you all, and I mean that.

I apologize for my personal attacks. There was no excuse
for them, they had no connection to anything real, and I've
been regretting them since.

And lest this thread become the great grandmother of all maudlin threads,
please allow me to nip it in the bud by taking the opportunity to apologize
for all of humanity and have done with it. :)

One of the signs of being either much older than I thought or more
distracted than I noticed, is that I will occasionally find something,
grab it in one hand, or put it on in the case of glasses or hats, and
then go on looking. This has been known to give me a better
indication of where my inventory of miscellaneous items in my home
are, but I do feel awfully damn foolish when I realize what I've done.
So far it's only occasional.

Where is it written that one must give up the search once an item is
found? Turning a focussed search into a full on rummage is marvellous
for fly tiers.

This has been known to give me a better
indication of where my inventory of miscellaneous items in my home
are, but I do feel awfully damn foolish when I realize what I've done.

mmmmmmmmm ... rummage.

I've found you don't really have to have been on the 'rum' before you
rummage, although it helps produce an unusually focussed blindness that
renders a rummager almost incapable of seeing the oject d'rummage. This
is especially so in the intense search that is often the precursor to
the more relaxed form of the rummage proper. Rum probably just enhances
a predisposition to rummage. The best part is you can rummage just
about anywhere too, though its a good idea to get permission before you
rummage about in someone else's fishing vest, pockets etc.

Steve (inveterate rummager :)

Isn't it wonderful? I was talking to some silvertip guy who
approached me as I was undoing a tangle one day and he remarked on my
choice of fishing clothing (nicely, I must add). I replied that as I
was old, I didn't have to look as if I knew what I was doing. Nor did
I even have to know what I was doing as long as I had fun, obeyed the
laws, and didn't hurt myself too badly. I think he had more to say,
but he was chuckling too much to get to it. Or else realized that it
might not be anything I'd care to deal with...

On my last final exam of my undergraduate career, taking the hardest exam of
my undergraduate career (structural geology with the infamous "Dr. B" who
never gave an A), I had to make a diagram with lots of calculations and
lines. My roommate and I were both odds-on favorites to break his long
record, and we were working frantically through the test to do a great job.
On the last problem, with time running out, I drew some initial lines, did
some calculations, then looked around in vain for my ruler to complete my
drawing. Dr. B was saying "OK, bring up your exams" and my damn ruler was
nowhere to be found. I felt behind my ears, looked under my chair, under my
thigh, under my paper, all in desperation. Finally, I just used the edge of
a spare pencil I had to make the best line I could in the situation, walked
up (looking back over my shoulder at my seat in absolute wonder and
confusion), and passed in my test to Dr. B, saying (say this out loud)
"Thorry ith tho methy, I theem to have juth loth my luler."

He got a total kick out of it, having witnessed the entire process.
