Live by the speech, die by the speech...
I'll admit it - I was stunned. If he loses, I can see Obama's
acceptance speech as being the source of his loss. And if so, it will be a shame, because I do think he is better than his speech can (and probably will) be made to make him look. He didn't even come right out and invoke King - at the DNC, for God sake. Even the song "Only In America" was a terrible choice for such a setting. It will be sad and ironic if he was book-ended by speeches at the DNC, and I think such is possible, if not likely. Stunned, R |

Stunned, R http://www.wbur.org/news/2008/79748_20080829.asp Most of the rest of the world thinks he will be the next president, and they have done for a while. Only the democrats themselves seem nervous. Although for many people outside America, ( including me) American politics is extremely difficult to gauge, much less understand. It is a historic moment that a black man should be nominated by a major party for the presidency of the United States of America, but whether that alone suffices, or indeed is sufficient grounds to actually elect him is another matter. In the final analysis, his colour or creed are irrelevant, it is his suitability or otherwise for the job which is actually more important. Quite a few people here get the impression that he actually has no firm policies, just hopes and promises. You can´t live ONLY on hopes and promises. Also, as other idealists have discovered to their cost, it is one thing to have ideals, it is quite another to actually implement them. |

Tom http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0808/12964.html http://www.breitbart.com/article.php...show_article=1 It has nothing to do with being for or against Obama, it was the speech in context. There was enough stuff there to give Rove, Carville, et al, plenty to work with to craft opposition. The length of Biden's congressional career mirrors McCain's, and it seems kinda odd that a new politics of the future guy would be just like Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Kennedy. And how many working-class families have "rah-rah" videos from supporters prominently featuring the supporter hisownself sailing on his yacht around the family compound in Hyannisport? If McCain had shown such a video featuring Bush I tooling around in his boat, golfing at the R & A, etc., what would the reaction be? To tie yourself Roosevelt and Kennedy to counter a charge of elitism? To hint that your Presidency will be like that of Clinton's (but only in any, but non-specific, way that anyone might think was good, but be nothing like it in any, but non-specific way anyone might think bad)? No foreign oil in 10 years, but he's gonna reward companies that create jobs right here "in America" - is that South, Central, or North America? Seriously, though, the US oil industry, the one that he wants to tax the bejeebers out of, creates jobs and supports thousands and thousands of working-class families and by definition, can only create (or maintain) jobs in the US. Etc., etc., etc.... Even the closing song - if you don't know the lyrics, read them. Sure, one of the kids could grow up to be President, but they could also be the one going to prison - two choices, Prez or prison. And in the other verse, the couple are riding in a limo wanting to be "stars" - not helping, not changing, just wanting things for themselves. I'm surprised they didn't play "Save A Horse..."...you know, to get the PETA vote...here's a hint, Dems - don't use C & W songs at conventions. I stand by what I said - this was not a good speech. And that anyone who doesn't see some pretty glaring weaknesses in Obama is not only blindly and rabidly partisan, but not rational, as well. You Republicans all repeat the same mantra at every turn; "Saying McCain equals four more years of Bush won't work". You guys say that all the time because you desperately need for it to be true but I got news for you, that's all Obama-Biden have to do between now and November. Just like the instructions on the shampoo bottle: McCain, Bush, repeat. LOL !! What makes you think I'm a Republican? IAC, as I've said, if it were Bush's veep or _certain_ folks in his administration running, such a charge could stick, but with McCain, it's not accurate and as such, it's not a certain strategy. Plus, given the candidates' weaknesses and strengths, it's too much of a "um, well, that's all we got..." strategy. TC, R |

Um, why is it so mind-boggling that a black man would not only be nominated, but elected as POTUS? It's historic, but hardly "mind-boggling." Hell, had he have wanted to run, Powell would have almost certainly been nominated by the GOP and may well have won, and that was before Obama had even gotten elected to anything. I was born in 1956 and I never in a thousand years thought that I would see this day. You're a little older than me...perhaps that's why I have little doubt that not only can a black man, but black men, white women, black women, Hispanic men and women, Asian men and women, etc., be nominated, and some will win, over the course of US history. And some will be excellent Presidents, some will be lousy, and some will just be largely forgotten by the bulk of the population. I have no doubt that folks of all races and colors can be another Chester A. Arthur... That was a great speech and only a blind fool partisan cynic could believe otherwise. I was born in 1956 and I never in a thousand years thought that I would see this day. That was a great speech and only a blind fool partisan cynic could believe otherwise. We have already had black presidents. 5 have been documented, here are 2. Andrew Jackson was our 7th president from 1829 to 1837. The Virginia Magazine of History Volume 29 says that Jackson was the son of a White woman from Ireland who had intermarried with a Negro. The magazine also said that his eldest brother had been sold as a slave in Carolina. Joel Rogers says that Andrew Jackson Sr. died long before President Andrew Jackson Jr. was born. He says the president's mother then went to live on the Crawford farm where there were Negro slaves and that one of these men was Andrew Jr's father. Another account of the "brother sold into slavery˛ story can be found in David Coyle's book entitled "Ordeal of the Presidency" Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president from 1861 to 1865. J. A. Rogers quotes Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks, as saying that Abraham Lincoln was the illegitimate son of an African man. William Herndon, Lincoln's law partner, said that Lincoln had very dark skin and coarse hair and that his mother was from an Ethiopian tribe. In Herndon's book entitled "The Hidden Lincoln" he says that Thomas Lincoln could not have been Abraham Lincoln's father because he was sterile from childhood mumps and was later castrated. Lincoln's presidential opponents made cartoon drawings depicting him as a Negro and nicknamed him łAbraham Africanus the First." |

I thought the speech was pretty weak and generally, another example of the Dems snatching defeat from what should be the jaws of certain victory, but I did post a some bait, as well. The last vestige of hope for at least one party to carry on a fairly straightforward, honest (as modern campaigns go) campaign relatively free of horse**** now appears totally snuffed well and truly out. Poor pathetic little wannabe.
Is that really the best you can do? I won't even bother plonking you. You're funnier than McCain's VP choice. Talk about lame ducks. Sorry. Didn't meen to bring up your... you know. Shsssss Where were we. Oh yeah. Delving into your lack of parental direction and bathroom etiquette. I'm pretty sure that if you gave it the old team effort you could get that floss around your tooth. One tooth shouldn't wear it out so much that it wouldn't make a great leader for your Barney rod. If it's still got a bit of wax on it you just might be able to float that bent pin your mommy glued the feather to. You remember, right? The one that fell out of the pillow your grampa used to shut you up with while he showed you the other use for your poop shute. Sorry, but I couldn't help but laugh when I was doing your mamma whilst watching your grampa doing you. Almost grabbed up one of those feathers to tickle your mammas clit with but she was worried about the old man's herpies. Oh well. I'ld rather go fishing than f**k your mamma anyhow. F**k you and anyone that looks like you! Not to mention the horse you tried to ride in on. |

That's really too bad for you - but I'm certain you'll be able to see it on the web - including at least a few minutes citing MLK. Dumbass. /daytripper It was a good speech but "speech of a lifetime?" Maybe Kennedy's `80 or Humphrey's `48.... Kerry's the night before was good. |

Had you done so, I'd have had to send Fred your way to, um, geg meddeval onn yuor as... sheesh, where did that boy come from? It's always refreshing, after getting miffed at the stupid **** that we all regularly post here, to realize it gets worse out there..... much worse. Tom p.s. Chester A. Arthur probably never had so much good press as he's gotten around these parts of late. |
