You know how I feel about Labrador. I won't fish there until
the province changes the stupid guide law. And that's way more
than I spend on fishing vacations at any rate. My big brookie
dream trip is in northern Ontario. Drive to the end of the road,
paddle all the way to James Bay then have a plane pick me up
and fly me back to the car. One of these days ...

I've not looked at that part of northern Ontario. I did a quick
Google on Rupert River and didn't see any mention of big brookies.
I was thinking of paddling a river on the western side of James Bay.

This summer, maybe. And it'd be great to have you along. I promised

What are you, the new net nanny ?

Wouldn't it be more productive to organize your sock drawer
or clean out your garage than to try and impose order on
this nuthouse ?

And the reason I didn't look at the part of northern Ontario
where the Rupert River is located is because the Rupert River
is in northern Quebec.

No, no, no. I still want to go to northern Ontario where the
brookies are and where the rivers dump into the western edge
of James Bay. Myron was talking about a whitewater river in
northern Quebec which dumps into the eastern edge of James Bay.

You're just gonna have to change it back, Mary Poppins.

Yeh, you're right. The Chimachouane and Rupert are northern Quebec. I
guided on the Chimacouane for several years, and always wanted to go
upstream to James Bay. But unfortunately, the James Bay Hydro Project
might have changed that region too much and the time for that trip has
passed. I tossed it out there before I actually read your post all
that clearly.

Nonetheless, I'd be up for a self-support open boat trip in Ontario,
and could probably come up with a couple of other good boaters to come
along, if folks wanted. Lets talk more about this; my summer is open
and it sounds like fun.

We'll be limited to four people, two canoes and gear because
that's all most of the available charter planes can carry.

Willi had some, or one, specific river in mind but I don't
remember right now which one. I know he wanted to avoid the
Albany because it was too touristy.

We should take this to email.

If we took 17' and 16' Explorers, they nestle easily and an Otter
could carry four, if needed. That would reduce the price considerably
(usually, the fly-in is the priciest part) and we could take more gear
if we ran the 17 footers tandem and you and I ran the 16 footers
solo.

I'll start researching river ideas. Meanwhile, I might run another
Mongolia canoe/fish trip this summer, either during the last two weeks
of June or the last two weeks July. Any roffians interested?

Are you talking about Mad River Explorers ? I didn't know they made
a 17 footer. But yeah, the plane divided six ways would be a lot
cheaper than divided four ways if we can find a big enough plane.

I'll start researching river ideas.

Pickle Lake is the "end of the road". Not literally, there are
gravel roads beyond that, but it's the last place you can leave
the cars and fly into from the pick up point on James Bay. If
we could make the plane trip one way only, that is just the
return flight from James Bay that would be way cheaper too.
Personally, I'm not dead set against the Albany but I'll let
you know what I hear from Willi.

Yep. We used them when we ran the Snake/Peel in the NWT...take the
thwarts out of the 17 footers and the 16 footers nest in them
perfectly. The 17 footer isn't a tremedous boat to paddle....its just
a stretched 16 footer, so the lines aren't as balanced as the shorter
boat, but its not as cumbersome as others I have floated. I think it
might have been a special production run years ago specifically to
make nestable boats...but I have seen them scattered about over the
years.

On the other hand, in Mongolia we used WeNoNah Rogues and Cascades
(16') and they fit inside 17' Prospecters fine. I think a starting
point would be to consider what boats we have and what we can get our
hands on.

I'll start researching river ideas.

There's a river up there somewhere, other than that Misstinasi (or the
Mistassini, or Mistasanni, or Mistabissi, or Mistaninni, or something
like that...) that has railroad egress. The engineer knows to watch
for canoeists waiting by the train bridge, and brings boats and
paddlers back out, charging them for freight. Maybe we can find a
river with railroad access, then just fly back out with lighter loads
and less careful packing?

Before your time, young fella. :-)

I know the Freedom 16 is just an Explorer 16 hull with the thwarts,
seats and the deck plate set differently, so I think a Freedom 17
might be the same hull as the old Explorer 17. If so an Explorer 16
should nestle inside with the 17's hardware removed.

Ahh, if its Mongolia you want, then let's talk. I just sent off an
email to my outfitter friend, and we're setting up another trip for
this summer. He's setting up the webpage as we speak, but for now you
can look at www.fishmongolia.com to learn more about the outfit,
river, region and fish. We'll fit the trip in around the Ontario
excursion.

Mongolia only needs a minimum of 5 people to run (6 including me), so
think about who else might be interested. We can customize it so that
we do fewer miles, and fish more often, than last year.

The price for last trip was in the $1750-$2K range for a 10 day trip,
all-inclusive (food, accomodation, internal flights ex-Ulaanbaatar,
boats, guides, etc). We met a guy (Dan Cook) on a round-the-world
fishing trip last time we were up there, and he thought the fishing
there was the best he had ever seen anywhere, with the possible
exception of Patagonia. Check out his website:
