I'm looking for a winter trip .... any good websites for info on the San
Juan?

Is it all nymphing in Winter? is it as crowded as I've heard?

other suggestions for Winter FFing? in the West

It isn't ALL nymphing, but it's mostly nymphing. Take lots of midge
nymphs. San Juan worms, eggs, and chamois leeches are very effective.

It isn't as crowded in the winter, but it's still too crowded for my taste.

RW is right, and from your descriptions of yourself it doesn't sound
like the type of fishing you enjoy. But I could be wrong, and if you
need a fish fix and decide to come down, give me a heads up. Who
knows?

Also, if you go to the San Juan, a short trip to the Animas (around
Durango, CO) is worthwhile.

I've been searching my limited knowledge to come up with a good winter
destination for trout for you, and I'm coming up empty. Maybe New
Zealand? :-)

I've heard on good authority that the Provo in Utah is good in the
winter, but I have no first-hand knowledge about it.

Silver Creek, which you know well, is gorgeous in the winter and
sometimes fishes decently, but no hatches to speak of that I've seen.
Duck hunting is very popular, though.

My fishing is on hold for awhile. No winter trip this year, unless
something irresistible comes up. I'm getting in shape for the XC ski season.

I've completed two of the three levels available of RosettaStone Spanish and
am still dreaming of Patagonia ... but .... I hate airplanes and it's 18
hours or something down there .... same for NZ ... add the obvious cost
factor and it ain't going to be this year, as we watch the stock part of our

Actually California has pretty good fishing available, if you're willing to
stoop to nymphing ;-) .... I see that even my 5 miles from here local
water made it big and hit the cover of a FF mag recently. But, as you amd
most fishermen know, the 'trip' is often the more important word in 'fishing
trip'

is very popular, though.


I 'think' it follows the Idaho state general season and is closed in Winter
??? BTW, I was there this June for three weeks and hit the start of the
Brown Drakes ... an experience, for sure

I have never tried to fish for steelhead ... although, ( as they are legally
defined here in Arnoldland ) I've caught a couple on the accidental

I've talked to guys about it and, to my taste, it sounds deadly boring

As for the health of our rivers ...

they ALL are dying

I'm sure I'll be corrected and informed, but as I write this I don't know af
a single fishery in the West that isn't in trouble ... varying degrees, of
course, but all are on the noticable decline

It's open through November 30, which is definitely winter in Stanley.
:-) I've done well with mahogany duns on Silver Creek in November.

Your comment reminded me of the fears of escaped atlantic salmon
taking over pacific habitat, but I couldn't find anything on the web
more recent than 2001. Has this issue subsided? Stabilized? Usually,
if invasive species are going to be a threat they balloon real fast in
the early years. If the atlantic salmon aren't doing this, then maybe
the pacific is different enough that they'll be no more than a minor
nuisance.

There was a large escapement earlier this year. See

There has been some indication of Altantic salmon succesfully spawning
in rivers fo Vancouver Island a few years ago. There has been some work
done, but I forget by who and when.

If you don't require natives, Texas stocks rainbows during the winter
months (begins in mid-/late-November) in lots of rivers and community
ponds.

It's not like fishing the Madison, but it's better than nothing and
all the fish are adults (no babies). They mostly have a 5 fish a day
limit.
