I spend the winter holidays, starting in early November, in the SF Bay
Area, fixing up the house, gardening, reading, going to the gym, hanging
out with my family, and eating too much.

In the New Year I go to Stanley, Idaho, where I mostly ski (XC skating,
downhill in Sun Valley, and not much backcountry skiing because I'm
terrified of avalanches), play a little hockey, tie a few flies, shovel
a lot of snow, lose weight, burn a lot of wood, drink too much, watch
tennis and politics on the TV, and make plans for the summer.

Then back to the Bay Area, usually in May, until the Northern Rockies
fishing kicks off after runoff. This May, however, I'm planning to fish
the Duck Valley Indian Reservation in Nevada with an old ROFFer.

I'm leaving for Idaho tomorrow morning.

Still here until tomorrow morning.

Tight lines in Tierra del Fuego. Are you fishing for those big sea-run
browns? I've heard stories and seen awesome photos. Lots of night
fishing, so I'm told.

Well what Ive been doing the last few weeks is trying to deal with the
weather. Snow first (15") for which we are weenies, and power outs,
for which my old kitchen wood range makes up for just fine. But the
rain is getting to me, and the wind is a ****er. I am on a hill, and
the coastal winds whip from the Southern Olympics and the Willapa
Hills in a straight shot for 70-80 miles from the coast, then bang
right into my house. I love weather, but 2 weeks of horizontal rain
can find every imaginable way into a structure.

Then there are the FLOODS!!!!!!! Our hillside is soggy but at least we
are not floating like some. Most of the rivers in Western Washington
are flooding. All the passes between Eastern Washington and Western WA
are blocked, by avalanches, snow or landslides. As a result, X Country
which we enjoy is out for now.

North/South, IE Seattle to Portland is blocked, with 10ft of water
expected over I-5, and the Amtrak rail lines are flooded. Its expected
to take 3-4 days till its all passable. Consequently, I can't get out
of the Puget Sound area to check on a camper Ive got in E.Wash, and
the nearest river with a hydrograph is cresting as we speak near to
flood stage. The farmer i lease to is an old hand at this stuff so Im
pretty sure he can get his stock back from the river or at least up on
an old levee. Stuck here I cannot do a damn thing.

Ill head out to Florida in a few weeks for some welcome relief.

I don't live tooooo far from you in NW MT and we have similar weather
but Luckily no high winds
We had 3 ft of snow which I loved as we do back country skiing
Then we had 4 days of heavy rain and the skiing is gone - all ice
Its crazy to even leave the house - dangerous driving - You can't drive on
ice

Re leaks - us too - in some places we never had them before

Fortunately our structures and barn are sound - I had to shovel the roof of
my hayloft and chicken pen

So for now just staying home and fiddlin' around
Drinking a bit and a puff or 2

Like you - I am headed out for warm sunny Long Beach CA in 2 weeks for
business

Wow, 3 ft! No we don't get anything like that in the Puget lowlands. I
think the max above sea level for this Island is about 350 ft. I love
the deep stuff to play in (carefully). Every couple of years we go up
to Scottish lakes High Camp, in the East slope of the Cascades. Nice
dry powder, real deep. They snowmobile you into primitive cabins/
outhouses. Miles of back-country and Xcountry trails (kinda trails:-))
The Special forces guys do some training in the area. Mostly for
hardcore, but non-whiner kids love it and fact is even reasonably fit
old-farts can enjoy a week of this stuff. At weeks end its real fun
to ski all the way down for miles to the valley. But with all the
screwy weather this year, avalanches etc this is probably not the year
for it.

Do you fish up into Canada? Like up the Frasier past 150 mile house or
wherever?

Last total 40 miles north of Spokane (Spokane has gotten around 80 inches)
we are just over 100 inches. (just over 8 ft.) It's been crazy. I've
shoveled the house once and thankfully it unloaded on it's own within the
last day or two. I've shoveled my storage/shop 30x40 twice... My back will
never be the same. The scary part is that we are only a week or so into
January.

It looks like they did a bunch of upgrades on several of the cabins.
You bring all your own food. They also have this deal where you go up
in the autumn and work for a few days, for which you get a a very
significant credit on costs. My son and his wife have done this.

Its a very old school place, family run, pretty unique, not money
grubbing, not for complainers expecting groveling service, and goes
out of its way to recognize mountaineering folk who live and sometimes
lose their lives in the back-country. It is also not a place for
people overly sensitive about logging, as there is responsible active
logging in the area. I think Montanans will feel right at home. :-)

Years back when my fishing was shoe horned into times between work I fished
lakes a lot. California has many quality stillwater fisheries, but only a
very few moving water ones ( that suit my style and preferences ) and they
are always very crowded.

Unlike many anglers I meet, I enjoy FFing lakes and find it challenging and
in important 'cosmic' ways more mysterious and intriguing than most (
freestone) rivers

BUT

when I retired I decided to mainly fish the places that most appeal to me
and try an 'learn' them while I still had a few years left to do so ... thus
I spend many hours each summer on a relative few rivers at this time.
There is NO WAY I can ever 'master' waters like the RxR Ranch in my
remaining time and that is it's biggest appeal, to me.

When, as is certain to happen to us all, I find getting around on streams
and fishing tiny insect imitations to be physically too demanding, I plan to
return to stillwaters where a good watercraft does much of the work, and big
flies are a norm, as is heavier tippet. Each year I think about going to
the Blackfoot lakes but the best time there is also the best time elsewhere.
August is the hardest month to find quality FFing and I often return to
lakes then, Hebgen is at it's prime time in the 8th month. Are the lakes
in your area good August destinations? What bugs/ flies/ tactics are likely
to be used to best advantage?

Re Blackfoot Rez

Joe Kipp can take you to lakes or streams
I fished w him in August and some of the accesss points and streams wree
isolated and unbelievable
Joe sat in back w a scatter gun and asked us to move whenever he thought
that he heard a gizzly
The fishing was great and the scenery even better.

Where he lives - right on his own land he has great access to Cut Bank
Creek
But he will take you to remote lakes and rivers that are only accessible to
the tribe

Definitely worth it
He is in Browning MT

The passes and I-90 opened yesterday bare and wet mostly, but that
snow looks very heavy and gives me the avalanche willies. After some
lady school teachers were crushed last year the State did a lot of
scaling thru the nastier I-90 cuts, but the wet snow tends to increase
the amount of falling rock. We and Oregon have decent systems of video
cams on most of the major cross-state routes which i always check out
before I go very far. I-5 N/S also opened up. But on all they say stay
away from the edges due to washouts.

Yeah, where *is* Richard when ya need him? I've given up counting the

I don't know what kind of hook they use for tying, but it is a very
strong hook, and the fish bent it like it was made of tin.

Never pulled a Reid, half or full. Tripped over a dead fall or two,
but never got wet. Broke a brand new Simms wading staff, my third in
