Now that we've all taken a deep breath...
what about fly fishing?
Alas, ffing remains more on the fantasy list than actual plans for me this year; but among the things I'd like to do are hitting the shad run on the Susquehanna (I've missed it for two years in a row), getting the 3-wt onto a few small streams, and maybe even getting the bike running well enough to stop up at the Penns Creek clave for a day, long enough to drink a lot of scotch & recover therefrom before heading back. I might even take the rods to Maine this year. The fall trip to Altmar is pretty well carved in stone, though my favorite lodge may not be open for business this year. I'll deal with that some other time. I've noticed that when I don't fish regularly, my gear tends to scatter. Not sure why. I have rods in three different places; I know my 8-wt. reel is still in the trunk of my car since last October, and the waders are still hanging up in the basement. I'm pretty sure they're dry now. The wading boots were on top of the freezer, but I'm not sure where they are now. On the floor next to it, I think. Most of my fly boxes are still in the gear bag; but a few have attempted an escape. I think there are some smallmouth flies in a desk drawer. The shad flies might be in my workshop, I have to check. I know there is a box of dries somewhere loose, but I can't remember where I saw them last. I still need to check out why the drag on one of my larger J. Ryalls was uneven last year. It'd hold, then almost free spin once it reached a certain threshold. I keep meaning to take it apart & clean it; but there seems to always be something else to do. Well, I ain't doing much fishing, but at least I'm thinking about it. Joe F. |

Well, I'm teased by going to my club meetings and getting reports from Florida, Teneriffe and assorted other places. I just go up to my man cave and fondle a few nymphs but the older I get the less I feel better afterwards. Frank Reid |

what about fly fishing? ... I've got two fly fishing trips etched in stone, my annual trip to Boulder Junction for the Muskie opener/UP trout/Sylvania smallmouth trip the last week of May and first week of June and our family vacation/a little bit of trout, smallie, pike fishing in Grand Marais the first two weeks of September. That's about it for planned trips at the moment. I may have to relent on my Labrador boycott one of these days, I sure would like to get into some big brookies and I still plan to do a northern Ontario canoe trip one of these days in pursuit of the same quarry. -- Ken Fortenberry |

"rb608" wrote in message ... what about fly fishing? if all goes well, I should be done with Bruces bugs by March, and head up to catch the Baetis on Spring Creek. That was fun last year. The handy one and I will open up camp at the end of April, so that means 4 or 5 days of Grannoms, Hendricksons and torrential downpours, if past history holds. By then, the local fishing should be good over heavy caddis hatches in the Tully, and early Sulfurs on the local trickle. Then, 8 days at Penn's, glorious Penn's at it's best, with Sulfurs, March Browns, and Green Drakes everywhere!!(not to mention, loads of fine company). After that, I will rest up, and plan forward from there. Tom |

"rb608" wrote in message ... what about fly fishing? Well, I ain't doing much fishing, but at least I'm thinking about it. Joe F. I enjoy hearing about others plans and trips coming up. Many times living vicariously through those tellings. I have a few trips in the works, mostly the normal stuff I do each year. I'll be flying down to Salt Lake this next Wednesday to meet up with my cousin, we are going to fish the Green for a few days (try and beat cabin fever off), we had hoped for the SF. of the Snake, however weather doesn't look very cooperative in that area. We will the be doing our normal skwala gig on the Root the end of March. My family and I will be taking a couple trips, one to the NF of the Clearwater and a trip over to the Oregon Coast near Florence/Yachats (sp?). We are going to pull the quads down and ride the dunes a few days and spend the rest of the time sight seeing and beach combing. I'm hoping to sneak away and possibly fish the Yachats river and maybe do some surf fishing. If anyone has and info on either of these options, I would really appreciate any info. Other than that, my cousin and I will meet up on Kelly Cr. late fall and I'll try for a few steelhead trips late fall early winter and any other side trips I can pull off with the normal life stuff going on. I'm encouraged by some of the posts lately, I hope we can bring this place back to a more civil environment. I certainly don't agree with what many say and think on this group, however I don't feel like jumping down their throat about it. I been around this nut house for many years, I think back to about 1992 or earlier and I have unfortunately watched many real and virtual friendships deteriorate. That's the only thing I have not enjoyed about it. All the rest is good, I've met and fished with some and made virtual friends in the process. I will say it's really funny to put a face with a name (facebook) after many years, not once has that person looked as I figured by their name/style. I hope to meet up with more of you over the years. Have a great fishing season and tight lines, JT |

"rb608" wrote The fall trip to Altmar is pretty well carved in stone, It looks like my annual pilgrimage to Montahoming will continue this summer. I always think about new ( to me ) places to go and ponder exploring far less known destinations than I mention on ROFF. But, old loves are hard to beat, if the love is real, and I suspect I'll mainly visit them. I notice that every post in this thread ( thus far ) about planned trips centers around the poster's old love destination, and that is as it should be IMHO. On the subject of loves, my wife will be joining me some of this season. My trailer is really too big for just me, but not really big enough for two .... long term. We don't want to buy a bigger one until we're sure she'll enjoy the lifestyle. It will be interesting to see how she likes it. She used to be very much an outdoorsy girl, but that has changed a lot with raising our son and other, at home, obligations. My job and my hunting/ fishing passions have kept me on the road and out in Nature, something she has always supported completely. I often mention ( aka bitch about ) my bad ankle and knee, they started with a serious rock climbing accident that left me on crutches for months way back when. My lovely bride ( to be at the time ) was my belayer, caught the fall, patched me best she could and helped me down off the rock to safety. Another, even earlier, time on a climbing/ hiking trip I fell asleep in the afternoon sun, as did Neil a climbing partner. When we woke up my sweetie calmly told us about chasing off a bear by banging on pots and how she had tried to not make too much noise and wake us !!! Understand why I got married? I'm looking forward to spending more time walking and enjoying Nature together than we've been able to mutually schedule the last couple decades. It's a great river, from brookies higher in the Blue Ridge to smallies down around Fredericksburg, to sea run species in the tidal zone. A few of us ROFFians actually had a few smallmouth claves there back in the day. And ditto on "Mr. Rapidan". I've been close to the Rapidan a few times but never fished it. I remember it as a sorta subplot in Howell Raines' "Flyfishing Through the Mid-life Crisis". I've wanted to catch a brookie there ever since reading that book. Joe F. |

I've got mine, right now, too - upstate NY, near Springfield Center, I was 10, 11, 12 - we fished this broad, long, slow, pool in a tiny stream. Looking back, someone must have dug it out, or something - it was practically a pond. Suckers and bluegills. Perch, too? Can't remember. I used my Zebco and could not have been happier, hangin' with the boys, throwing rocks, exploring the woods, all that. It was all fishing. |

Creeks and lakes is the goal. I hope this is general enough. Headwaters of the Kern are amazing (golden are like little brookies, they'll slash at anything that moves). It is quite a hike to get to their home waters, even on horseback. Don't forget lake Isabella. There are some huge bass in there feeding on the trout that go upstream. Frank Reid |

"mr.rapidan" wrote We're landing in Fresno and will head . . . East. We'll be up high. Creeks and lakes is the goal. I hope this is general enough. I had a wonderful, single afternoon fishing a high lake in the Kaweah area many years back and a couple days hike in. There was a small grassy area in the mostly granite shoreline and lots of hoppers in that grass ... Nature co-operated to make the wind blow hard and take hoppers with it out onto the lake ... I had one hopper pattern and a yellow humpy, and consistently caught nice fish by watching them cruise and then plopping a fly in front of them until both finally were gone, then the action slowed. All three of us on the hike ate well that night, although I was the sole angler. What I remember of the hike itself was being tired and unable to keep up with my long legged companions at first, down in the gloomy trees, but when we got above the timber my spirits soared and I'd have to wait for them to catch up. That was my only backpack into that part of the Sierra, the mountains are pretty poor rock there and I spent most of my time seeking solid granite in Yosemite. Have a great time .... |

So, mayhaps that your daydream is really using dries but you're always starting with the hook up (and the fish has sucked down the fly). On the occasions that I find myself actively sitting and engaging in farfetched daydreaming about fishing, *i.e. picturing myself pulling in fish after fish ( see told you it was a dream ) ............ You know, I'm pretty much the same way. *Well, at least in the daydream, the fly is always under water and I start with the hook up. So, mayhaps that your daydream is really using dries but you're always starting with the hook up (and the fish has sucked down the fly). Frank Reid (who's not a daydream dry fly purist, but I'm definately not catching 4" blue gill) My ff dreams (even daydreams) are usually on nymphs, but not always, and I can understand why people dream thay are using nymphs. There is a different cognitive process in hooking a fish beneath the surface, where your mental acuity and imagery plays a more powerful role than just watching for a splash that takes down a dry. Think about doing something physical, like swinging a hammer. Do you visualize the motion of the hammer moving, or the sensation of your arm moving and the head striking the nail (or in Frank's case, the thumbnail)? I think we tend to remember the thing that uses the most cognitive energy; nymphing (in the case of ff) and the impact of the hammer. --riverman |
