Western Conclave Update

Okay gents, I have finally put together a somewhat limited
information page for Mayhem on the Madison II. I'm still open for
other names for this conclave so if you have one, I'm all ears. :-)

I put links to various accommodations, the Cabin Creek FS Campground
that will be Clave Central, hatch charts, etc. I got off the phone
with the owner of the Slide Inn a few minutes ago (sorry Randy Kane,
I interrupted him while he was emailing you g) and he said that he
may still have a few rooms available for July. He is in the process
of confirming the reservations he has and cancelling some here and
there. I would advise you to call ASAP if you are still looking for
a place to stay as I am sure they will go fast.

I have a new email addy in case you guys want to drop me an email
with your questions. The yahoo addy will still work, but my primary
email addy is now at earthlink.net . Email addy and link to the web
page are in my sig.

I am toying with the idea of going out on a little fishing expedition
tomorrow up to the where the Clave will be. Kelly said that there is
about 5' of snow at the Cabin Creek Campground but that the fishing
has been really good with midge patterns (some of the ones I gave him
that were the SJ patterns that Bruiser told me to tie up). If this
weather keeps up, we very well could be having the clave during high
water levels and stonefly hatches so be prepared for difficult wading
and kick ass fishing. It will all depend on how spring runoff goes,
which I have no control over. Hopefully runoff will be over and the
stoneflies will just be hatching while you guys are here. It is just
an incredible hatch that I think everyone should fish at least once
in their life.

Snowpacks are already pretty good and more snow is coming so it is
starting to look like it very well could be a really good year for
snowpacks around the state. This could mean later runoff, higher
river levels, much cooler water temps and several other good things.
I'm really looking forward to the fishing next year if this pattern
keeps up. The rivers should be in prime shape and make floating much
easier.

The list of attendees that I currently have is:
Dave Martel
Jeff Miller
IJ
Lou Teletski
Tom
Charlie Choc
Tim Lysyk ?
Danl & Cindy
RW

If your name isn't on this list, please drop me a line with your
intentions. It makes it much easier for me if I know roughly how
many people are coming.

Warren,
Thinking Hard . . . and thinking about driving.
Total Est. Time:* 16 hours, 20 minutes Total Est. Distance:*986.55 miles
Ouch.

I might have a small gap between projects, but will need to confirm as
the date grows closer.

Anyone from the S.F. Bay Area (or along the route) interested in a "convoy"?

Give us a T.R. if you check out the river tomorrow. I did have a nice trip on the
Trinity River this past fall, loads of Salmon and Steelhead in the river . . . I had
a feeling we would have a wet/heavy snow year based on the numbers
of fish we were seeing.

I may drive over and join you guys, if that's all right, and if I can
get a day off.

I'd join you on the Madison but I don't like driving in the dark. I
just had a herd of deer cross right in front of my truck on the way
into town for dinner. Luckily I was able to stop the truck in time. I
hate driving 191 in the dark too.

It is quicker going through Ennis now. The new road is pretty damn
nice to drive on and the construction zones weren't bad last time I
drove over. The deer can still be a problem if you aren't careful

I wouldn't go that far. I drive a little Mazda pickup over there
quite often and have only had one "problem" between Bozeman and Four
Corners in the last 8+ years. Damn deer jumped out in the road as I
was heading into the setting sun.... The real problem is when it
gets dark. If you drive sanely with your high beams on, you'll be
able to spot the eyes along the road and avoid potential
confrontations. 191 has fewer deer/elk once you get through the
Park, but it is a windier road that is slower going. The upside is
that all of the big rigs are now going to West via 287 and act as
"deer plows." I have driven this road many, many, many times and
think it is pretty damn safe if you are paying attention, driving
within 20 mph of the speed limit and blasting the radio with the
windows down.

I hear ya, Paul. The deer in our area are thicker than liberals on roff:)
I'm about ready to purchase a "deer vaporizer" for the front of my 2003 Dodge

Accord. You always worry about reliability after a major rebuild. I plan on
keeping this truck a long time.

I have been thinking about heading to the lower Madison some day soon,
as the Yellowstone is still icey and always seems to be this winter.
Am curious about the road construction (they aren't doing any thing
now, right?).

BTW, I fished Armstrong's last week. No wind, overcast, in the 30's.
In other words, the ideal conditions for rising fish every where. No
hatch really, and the fish in the lower pool were barely rising.
Couldn't believe it. Had to resort to midge larva and an egg! Hate
to do it, but I did! There were some "spawning" browns and rainbows.
We fished the honey hole by where you park and none of us caught any
thing! Wow! 1st time for that! I didn't see the numbers of fish that
I've seen in the past.

Thanks Warren.

What is with it with those guys? Do they not know how they look? I
know they don't often see the backs of their own heads, but they have
to see other pony tailed balding guys and be able to feel the skin
where there should be hair...

Might be cool when they get all the way to the monk's tonsure look to

I had one made for my Ford back in 81 by going to the welding shop and pointing
at the 8 inch channel for a start for the bumper and then went very substantial
for the grill guard. Never could buy overload shocks that were up to the
additional weight and it looked like I had lowered the front of the truck, but
I never noticed running over anything as long as I owned that truck.

Yesterday morning I strapped a rod to the old BMW bike and took a ride to a

with a 3/4 pound bluegill on. It was nice riding the bike again with no coat in

We probably have more deer strikes in town than in the country. We really do
have an overpopulation problem. Folks in town feed the deer. Deer will lay on
the south side of houses and soak up the sun. It's impossible to have a garden
or grow trees and shrubs. I used to have some pine trees in the yard but the
buck antelope like to rub their horns on them and now there are no trees left.
I've had over 20 antelope in my yard on some occasions.
A couple of years ago, a semi hit 6 elk on I25 south of town. Yeah, paranoid
is the word.

Our TU chapter is in Sheridan (although I think it's now inactive). But,
when they were active, the meetings were at night and it was a 70 mile round
trip for me. A slow trip because I drove 50-55 mph.
Nothing wrong with bald. Maybe the pony tails were just "comb overs" that
they didn't have time to arrange

There is not any road construction currently going on that I know of.
They pretty much quit around October/November and start up again in
the spring. You may want to check with some of the shops over here
before making a trip over to the Lower Madison. I haven't fished

stickers on my beautiful Clacka!! :-) Except maybe a yellow paintball
splat one g

Might look cool to do the front as a shark mouth like they did on
those old airplanes. Or you could paint flames down the side and put
fuzzy "dash" material on the leg locks. You could even hang some
fuzzy dice off the oar locks.... Maybe add a hydraulic seat so that
you could bump and row. Hell, there are just too many possibilities!

That's not bad looking at all. Do they only come in silver?

Nope. Other colors are available. It's a powder coat finish which should be
a bit better than plain, painted steel.

Here's a neat bumper we looked at on the way down to the San Juan. It's an
aluminum, winch bumper made with 3/8" & 1/2" aluminum plate. Very well made.
But, the bumpers for the 2003 require the addition of a bottom plate to protect
the bottom of the radiator and the manufacturer doesn't supply this so I lost
interest.

It kind of sucks when you hit the rapids because you have to worry

I would have lost interest at "aluminum" :-)

I had a Ranch Hand rear bumper on a 3/4 ton Chevy about a decade ago after a
kid tore up the factory bumper by backing into the truck. It looked hell for
stout, but I never tested it as the truck was never wrecked after that.

We probably have more deer strikes in town than in the country. We really do
have an overpopulation problem. Folks in town feed the deer. Deer will lay on

The state isn't issuing many doe tags, if any as far as I know. I
haven't met any one with one.

You can get over the counter B tags for several areas and your A tag
is good for either sex whitetail all over. I used to get B tags for
the Gallatin Special Weapons area but didn't buy one this year.
Access in that area is getting more and more difficult.....

I'm giving it a good thought....put me on the list as tentative. May need
to cut some time out of the Penn Clave, but I'm dying to get out to your
neck of the woods. I have to warn you, the last four times I went on
vacation I had to deal with a Hurricane (in the Outer Banks), search and
rescue at Boca Grande (after nearly capsizing ourselves), 20 year low
temperatures in the Keys, and pnemonia that put my 2 year old in a Port
Charlotte Hospital for 6 days (this doesn't include the rain and high water
at the Penn's Clave the past two years, although this past year wasn't too
bad). Needless to say I'm a bit snake bitten, so bring layers, rain gear,
floatation devices (is Frank Reid coming?), antibiotics, and batten down the
hatches well, if I do actually plan on showing. If I bum a ride from anyone
you may want to have one of them there fancy bumper systems, I'm sure an Elk
will jump out in front of me..

Is the Slide Inn and/or other accommodations close to Clave Central? I
prefer to camp, but don't know if I want to have to deal with shipping all
of the camping crap or not.

Will also need a box, or four, or flies. I saw your links but which is the
best, and are the fish as selective to fly patterns, as compared to Penn's,
or can I just throw a shiny hook out there and catch 20 inchers??

Mike M asks:
can I just throw a shiny hook out there and catch 20 inchers??

if said hook is attached to suitable stonefly nymph(possibly darker
variations), you can probably do as you do in the East. This from the limited
experiences I have stumbled through out West.

snipped bad mojo

Will do Mike.

All of the accommodations on the web page are close to Clave Central.

In terms of closeness:
Campfire Lodge (right across the road from the campground)
Slide Inn (very close and better accommodations than Campfire)
Howlin' Mad Moon Resorts (not far from the Slide Inn and looks ok)
Madison River Cabins & RV
West Fork Cabin & RV (about 13 or 14 miles down 287 from Clave
Central)
Wade Lake Cabins

If you want to camp, I can have gear waiting for you out here. Tent,
sleeping bag, can chare my cooking gear, etc.

Will also need a box, or four, or flies. I saw your links but which is the

The fish can be very selective at times and definitely aren't easy
enough to take a shiny hook. We very well could be fishing anything
from huge salmonfly dries (Sofa Pillows, Stimulators, etc) to SJ size
midge patterns depending on what is going on and where we will be
fishing. If you plan on tying your own flies, Remember that size and
colors are different from Penn's. I could send you examples of
certain flies you may want to have for the clave. The golden stones
that you had at Penn's should work out here and I am sure that a few
of your other flies will be useful as well.

Personally, I use the Bud Lilly and Madison River Outfitters hatch
charts the most for the Madison River. I labeled the others as
"Yellowstone" that are good for areas in the Park and the Yellowstone
River itself. Some of the fly shops also have fly tying info on
their web site that will give you an idea of size and color as well.
Another good place to check is Harry Mason's web site at:
http://www.troutflies.com/
Harry's site has very good pics as well as tutorials. If I wanted to
buy flies online for this clave, I would buy them from Harry. Not
only are his flies good but he has some experience with fishing in
this area and may be another good source of info.
