Penn's questions
I don't live in Pennsylvania so I MIGHT be wrong, but I believe that May
is a rainy time of year. Willi is NOT wrong. Over the last 30 years, we've averaged about an inch of rain a week at that time of year. Dave and I got caught in a minor blizzard last year! But we also have lovely, warm, sunny days in May. |
Penn's questions
Well,
the ticket is booked and paid for. With the connection flight it was US$ 740. Some questions: What are the waters that we fish? Small creek(s)? Big river? Any special flies that are a must? Do I bring my own deck of cards or will you bring your marked ones? ;-) Do I need to shop for food in advance or is there a place nearby that I can get what I need? Do you plan dinner in groups or each and everyone to himself? Whats lobster night? An excuse to get drunk? What will the climate be like? Lou, is it OK if I accept your offer on a sleeping bag and mattress? I have a four piece rod Sage 490-4LL, will that cover my needs or do I bring a heavier classed rod? What will we be fishing for? (Brown trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat or what?) Anyone wish to buy something from Sweden? Loop reel or anything like that? / Roger Daytime engineer Lifetime fly fisherman If you feel like it, visit http://www.imsoc.se/angler/ for info on fly fishing in northern Sweden, Lapland, or visit http://www.imsoc.se/ffgallery/ , the fly fishermen's gallery. |

I hear tell it's guaranteed to be sunny and warm. Compared to what, Scotland? Bring your Swedish Gore-Tex Bikini Model Volleyball Team. I'm personally looking for a good condition "dry suit" for this year. Frank Reid |

Penns Creek is a fairly large stream, wadeable, but you can only cross it at a few places. I am sure that there will be side trips to smaller creeks. If Dave PA goes, see if you can bum a ride with him. Great guy who knows the area well. Any special flies that are a must? Most caddis and mayfly imitations work well. I've had lots of luck with PTs and caddis larva numphs. Do I bring my own deck of cards or will you bring your marked ones? ;-) Jeffie will supply the cards, and they won't be marked. d;o) Do I need to shop for food in advance or is there a place nearby that I can get what I need? There's a supermarket in Milheim. We'll stop there if you want. It's just up the road from where we'll get your license. You can get stuff to make sandwhiches or whatever you need. Do you plan dinner in groups or each and everyone to himself? Usually dinner is whenever someone feels like fixing something. I've learned a long time ago that it's difficult to get everyone together at one time. But, you won't go hungry. Whats lobster night? An excuse to get drunk? Uhhh, the folks you'll meet at Penns do not need an excuse to get drunk. Lobster nights is Thursday night at the Milheim. If you've never had lobster, it will be a treat. You don't have to have lobster, however. They make a very good hamburger fwiw. What will the climate be like? Could be chilly, but nothing that would require heavy clothes. I would say the temps will be in the 60s or warmer during the day. The water will be cold. Dress in layers. Lou, is it OK if I accept your offer on a sleeping bag and mattress? There are two couches in the cabin also. I have a four piece rod Sage 490-4LL, will that cover my needs or do I bring a heavier classed rod? I'm guessing that is a 9 ft 4 weight? I normally use the same rod in a two piece model What will we be fishing for? (Brown trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat or what?) Browns and rainbows. If Waldo goes, follow him and you'll catch lots of suckers. d;o) Anyone wish to buy something from Sweden? Loop reel or anything like that? What else do you have to offer? d;o) / Roger Daytime engineer Lifetime fly fisherman If you feel like it, visit http://www.imsoc.se/angler/ for info on fly fishing in northern Sweden, Lapland, or visit http://www.imsoc.se/ffgallery/ , the fly fishermen's gallery. In the areas I fished Spring Creek is usually 10 to 20 meters wide and easily wadeable Any special flies that are a must? My best luck has been on caddis emergers, Hares ears and Pheasant tails Do I bring my own deck of cards or will you bring your marked ones? ;-) I'm sure they will be sufficently marked, now where's that Kroner exchange chart? Do I need to shop for food in advance or is there a place nearby that I can get what I need? Plenty locally. Do you plan dinner in groups or each and everyone to himself? Don't miss Asadi's mexican night or Franks Moose and Barly stew Whats lobster night? An excuse to get drunk? The lobsters we're reffering to look like this. As Dave noted, no excuse needed. http://www.livelob.com/lobstergram/s...atid=SURFNTURF What will the climate be like? Here's a link to Jonas's shop. Although it looks a bit dormant right now it's a wealth of information on conditions as the trip gets closer http://www.twd.net/feathrhk/ you can also look up Coburn PA on weather.com and look at the historical. I've seen shorts and t-shirts, I've seen hail and I've seen Brookies rising in Frank's tent. I have a four piece rod Sage 490-4LL, will that cover my needs or do I bring a heavier classed rod? A 4 weight should work fine unless you fall into company with Petah and end up night fishing with streamers What will we be fishing for? (Brown trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat or what?) Yep, primarly although there are Brook trout as well. Anyone wish to buy something from Sweden? Loop reel or anything like that? Pancakes? Really looking forward to meeting you. I don't live in Pennsylvania so I MIGHT be wrong, but I believe that May is a rainy time of year. The year I went, it literally rained every day and the rivers were muddy and very high. That was an exceptional amount of rain. Last year was better. The likelihood of muddied rivers is what makes the trip this year iffy for me. Maybe Bill is in charge of weather this year and he's guaranteeing good weather? With the discussions of Penns weather that we've seen on ROFF, I didn't think my post needed a smiley. :-) Roger, plan on bringing everything from shorts to midweight long johns, from sun hat to full on Gore Tex and you'll probably use most or all of it during the week. Roger Ohlund wrote: Well, the ticket is booked and paid for. Some questions: What are the waters that we fish? Small creek(s)? Big river? some of the waters you fish, based on photos you have posted, seem about the same size as penns. penns has all the variety and character in a trout stream you could want... i'm sure you'll find a stretch of penns that reminds you of many other trout streams you've fished. the other streams in the area are smaller. we'll assure that you find the type of water you prefer and sample others you might like. most of the group sit on the productive pools or runs, fishing only the peak hours. others like to hike and move about a good bit. you'll have plenty of choices and opportunities with this crowd of very enthusiastic and accommodating anglers. Any special flies that are a must? yup...but, it's hard to predict. bring some of what you have confidence with, but you'll probably do better just to wait til you're there and then buy from jonas' shop or bum some from makela and littleton. if the hatches are on, it's just a phenomenal sight and you do your best to match it. i've only seen it in full form one of the three years i've been at penns. but, that and the big penns' browns keep me returning each year. march browns, sulphurs, and stoneflies seem standards each year, and always catch fish. but, i've caught fish on an elk hair caddis, stimulator, parachute adams, and hares ear. it's technical fishing, no doubt, but even i land a few. the match the hatch gurus and the dredgers always seem to do well. Do I bring my own deck of cards or will you bring your marked ones? ;-) cards are at the cabin. Do I need to shop for food in advance or is there a place nearby that I can get what I need? we'll get victuals there... if dave is bringing you, he'll know where to stop on the way. we'll shop at some point during the week, but usually pick up stuff as needed or when we feel like it .. Do you plan dinner in groups or each and everyone to himself? groups usually form for meals... you'll have plenty of hosts. Whats lobster night? An excuse to get drunk? .... the milheim inn offers a good deal on lobster one night a week, and a crowd usually likes to eat there. they have a good bar. What will the climate be like? hard to tell. it varies. best guess is warm during the day 60s-70s, cool at night 40s-50s. might rain...might not, but usually does rain some. the first year was beautiful weather with incredible hatches; second year was a monsoon; last year there was some rain, but mostly just overcast skies and a bit chilly. Lou, is it OK if I accept your offer on a sleeping bag and mattress? sure g I have a four piece rod Sage 490-4LL, will that cover my needs or do I bring a heavier classed rod? 9 ft 4 weight will be perfect for penns. there will be plenty of other rods available if you want a different rig. What will we be fishing for? (Brown trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat or what?) in penns, mainly big browns... some rainbows... very few brookies. we've caught some smallmouth bass too...and wally caught a carp. i'll e-mail you some pictures. jeff |

Uhuh, I'm starting to feel scared of this Feathered Hook fly shop. Perhaps
I better not set my foot in there, knowing myself and all. ;-) Or maybe bring more money.....hmmm.....better not. The problem with the Feathered Hook is that it is a fully stocked fly shop, run by a guy who is immediately likable. You spend 5 minutes talking to him and he's already figured out your current needs, future needs, a couple of long range desires and your ability to pay. He then shows you a few items that are within your budget. Problem is, one or two are within the budget, but you look at all he offers and end up picking up enough to cover the cost of one of those long range desires. Then he does things like sell you waders (by noticing that your in the shop with wet pants), and then says to bring them back next year and he'll upgrade you to the next level of waders for the price difference. Just go there, throw open the door, throw in your wallet and step in afterwards. He will then know your credit history so you can avoid the first 5 minute talk. I have to admit, there are few local fly stores that equal his level of service. One's in North Carolina, one's in St Louis, and I know of three in California. With the current dollar to krona rate, you're in for a treat. As an aside, when I was in California last month, I went into Bob Marriotts in Orange. I told them where I was going fishing. I also said I needed a license. The store had already sent all of their 2003 licenses back to the state, so the clerk just got on the phone, called up three stores where I was going, found one that opened early that had licenses on hand, got a fishing report on the local river and proceded to walk me around the store to ensure I had every thing that I needed for the conditions 250 miles away on a river he'd not been on in 20 years. When you tell him you're shopping for something in particular, he'll take the time to ask a few questions first to make sure he's giving you proper advice. In my case, I spent about ten minutes in the shop buying a few flies, gadgets, etc., and then a few other fly fishers, Jonas and I sat on the front porch of the shop and just swapped stories. I found him so likeable that I WANTED to spend more of my money in his shop. Frank should also retell the 2002 story of the lost rod, which truly shows this man's character. He's a gem in the world of lesser men. There's a Pennsylvania group that has a get together in the same area. Here's their site for their get together. Lots of good information: http://mysite.verizon.net/vze2gkpn/ What are the waters that we fish? Small creek(s)? Big river? Small creeks and Big streams. Some with dumb stocked fish and some with PhD fish. Any special flies that are a must? We will probably hit a Sulphur hatch on the Penns. There are about 4 different types of Sulphurs from cream to Orange. The fish often key on only one of these types drys and my change what they are keying on after a short period of time. There is also a size 14 yellow (canary-yellow) crane fly that at times will get strikes while the fish are hiting Sulphurs. Do I bring my own deck of cards or will you bring your marked ones? ;-) I don't know snything about poker or hearts , but may be willing to learn. Do I need to shop for food in advance or is there a place nearby that I can get what I need? Don't know. Haven't stayed with this group before. People in the U.S. typically eat a small Breakfast compared to Europeans (Nothing resembling Frustuk). Lunch is usually light also, with Supper (Dinner) being the big meal (in size, but not variety). Do you plan dinner in groups or each and everyone to himself? Lobster dinner at the Milhjeim Hotel and the dinner at the Sportsman Club are attended by most. Other meals depend on individual schedules and If someone is puting together a stew, Bar B Que, or similar social eating event. Whats lobster night? An excuse to get drunk? A special menu that the Milheim Hotel puts on once a month featuring Lobster. Very well attended by not only ROFF. Reservations are a must and must be made early. What will the climate be like? Like Stockholm. Rain may effect fishing conditions where you will not be able to fish the stream you would like, but an alternate stream of a lower priority will be fishable. Lou, is it OK if I accept your offer on a sleeping bag and mattress? I planed on giving you the small bedroom. Don't know what beds are like so I'm bringing air matresses and a couple of folding cots if the sofas are not that good. I'll have a 40 degree Farenheit. goose down sleeping bag for you to use. I have a four piece rod Sage 490-4LL, will that cover my needs or do I bring a heavier classed rod? Sounds like the rod of choice for most attendees. I will have spare rods and reels in case anyone breaks theirs plus a cheap pair of Red Ball stocking foot waders in case some one ruins theirs. What will we be fishing for? Roger, I hit a super spot on Spring Creek in 2003 and had an exceptional 45+
fish day. I would be glad to take you over. Elk Creek can be an excellent fish as well and you can start on the section where it runs into Penns and not wander far from the crowd. Plan on dredging Penns with nymphs unless you see the fish actively feeding on top. The church I require most is a moment to myself in a lush river valley with crystal clear water, crowded with trophy trout during a major hatch ;-) /Roger |
clavemeisters reply to Roger's questions
Roger(and first off, thanks for planning to become the farthest traveller ever
to the Penn's Creek diving club meet!!) What are the waters that we fish? Small creek(s)? Big river? Both are possible. Penn's itself is large, up to 150 feet across in spots. All others are smaller, down to jump-across trickles. Any special flies that are a must? not really, although you will be receiving a few that may helpg. Do I bring my own deck of cards or will you bring your marked ones? ;-) answer should be obvious...just bring your money. Do I need to shop for food in advance or is there a place nearby that I can get what I need? there are grocery stores for most items save the unique gourmet things. Do you plan dinner in groups or each and everyone to himself? you will be housed, I believe, with a group that does to some extent plan meals. Some of us fish most of the night, and grab either pizza, or whatever the organized folks have left over..... Whats lobster night? An excuse to get drunk? well...yes. It is a group dinner at an overly elegantly named Millheim Hotel, who serves Lobster Dinners en masse every other Thursday. What will the climate be like? I have been fishing the area every May for 15 or 16 years. I have seen everything from 85 degree(farenheit) days to snow and sleet. Allow for layers of clothing. Lou, is it OK if I accept your offer on a sleeping bag and mattress? this is between you, and Lou.... I have a four piece rod Sage 490-4LL, will that cover my needs or do I bring a heavier classed rod? a 4 weight should do you ok. I do use a heavier rod(5/6 weight) for Penns. Some the fish can get large, and Penn's trout are very angry fighters. What will we be fishing for? Brown Trout and Inner Peace. hope this helps Tom |

I MIGHT be wrong, but I believe that May is a rainy time of year. The year I went, it literally rained every day Willi was present for the worst year for heavy rain in nearly 20 years. May is NOT, I repeat, NOT a typically raining month in PA(April often is, though). I can remember several seasons with NO significant rain in May. Tom |
Penn's questions
Roger asks:
During the clave, will anyone be likely to fish the surounding waters? (Pine, Elk, Big fishing and/or Spring creek?) It would be nice to see more than one water. I will be glad to personally escort you to Big Fishing Creek and Elk Creek. Others noted(DavePA,etc) know Spring and the little Junianta well. Don't worry, Roger, we will take care of you. Tom |

So I'm not all that sure it is the deal it would've been say ten months ago. On the other hand I have REALLY good prices at the local fly shop AND they sell Loop. /Roger The US dollar may be dropping, but not the Canadian one. :))))) Peter turn mailhot into hotmail to reply Visit The Streamer Page at http://www.mountaincable.net/~pcharl...ers/index.html |
Penn's questions
Willi was present for the worst year for heavy rain in nearly 20 years.
True, that was exceptional. Not sure of the dates of the Clave that year, but it rained 5.92 inches in May and 9.0 (!) inches in June. May is NOT, I repeat, NOT a typically raining month in PA(April often is, though). According to the data published daily in the CDT (local paper) by AccuWeather, the 30-year average rainfall for the month of May is 3.70 inches. Average for April, 3.16 inches. June, 4.28 inches. Large standard deviations, of course. As long as I'm looking stuff up, average high temps for the second half of May rise from 69 to 73, F; average overnight lows, 48 to 53. All those numbers are for State College, about 30 miles WSW of Coburn. In this kind of mountainous terrain, both rainfall and temps can vary a lot over relatively short distances. vince |

Tom I know I got a distorted perspective when I was there, but according to the weather station at State College, May is the wettest month of the year. http://www.worldclimate.com/cgi-bin/...7+2200+368449C Willi |

i think you would enjoy penns. it's definitely different than the
strenuous pocket water hikes in the nc mountains and the wide-open vistas of the west. easy access and big fish. if the weather cooperates, the hatch alone is worth experiencing. standing in a run watching huge browns rise and leap for the bugs is unforgettable. pretty country. the amish make it an even more unique visit... if you need to set up camp, and can't find another spot, there is probably yard space at the swedish indian carolina cabin... jeff Charlie Choc wrote: On Sat, 10 Jan 2004 14:48:16 GMT, "Joe McIntosh" wrote: IJ asks--small trailer?? hell Charlie havn't you named the terminator mobile yet ? Charlie asks:
How far in advance do you need to reserve a camp site around clave central? If I come I'll be bringing a small trailer. Thanks. for that, Charlie, you should basically be able to drive into the campground and check in. Reservations would please the owners no doubt, but space shouldn't be a problem that early in their season. Tom |
