Whats the best or strangest thing you have found while fishing? In the
water, in the parking area? Was it valuable? did you return it or try to?

Not much for mr prsonally (a cheap wooden net, a myriad of spinning lures)
but I do know a guy who found a set of dentures. I creeped him out.

Well, found a few fishing rods (diving under the dock to get mine). Found a
fly box with about $100 in flie (perfectly sealed, no rust on the flies) at
Penns. Found a wallet with a couple of hundred bucks in it. Tracked down
the owner and returned it. Found a lot of friends along the way, haven't
lost any of them.

Never found anything strange while fishisn', (yes, I have been fishin'! ) :)
, but once while fishing in Michigan with my brother, he reached into the
water and scooped up a beautiful pink water lily and gave it to me. I still
have it. I know-sappy, huh?

Kind of strange, but I've found 3 fly boxes since 2000. The
latest box had well over 200 flies! All of which appeared to
be well tied by the owner. In all instances, I've tried to
find the owner by checking at the local fly shops.

A month or two back we found an oar in the water. This was a
very expensive counterbalanced graphite drift boat oar. I sent
a few emails to the local shops and low and behold we found the
owner. The guy was real excited, since he estimated the value
of the oar at $300. I ended up getting a free weekend lodging
package down on the Bighorn out of the deal! :)

reminds me of a fascinating little vignette i was involved in about 25

years ago. i was living in the front half of a duplex, and my housemate,
ben fulton, decided to take up trout fishing. i gave him directions to a
few streams, and he spent nearly every weekend learning the craft. late in
the summer, pj roberts and i spent a couple days up on big snowbird. the
last afternoon, we were subjected to one helluva thunderstorm, and had to
seek shelter under an overhanging bank. we had to crawl out of the water
through some tough laurel, and i fell neck deep trying to struggle ashore.
as we sat waiting out the rain, i suddenly realized my wallet was no longer
in my pants. after the storm passed, i walked down stream for quite a ways,
hoping to see the wallet and retrieve all the licences, credit cards, and a
small amount of cash, therein. no luck.
i came back home, and spent most of the week replacing the lost items.
next sunday night i was watching tv, and ben shows up. he sat down, chatted
for a while, and then says, with a grin, "you been up on snowbird lately?"
i say yes, and begin to lament my lost wallet. when i had nearly finished
my tale, he casually reached into his back pocket and tossed a wallet on the
floor at my feet. yep, it was my wallet. everything intact. he had been
wading upstream, and glanced down to better negotiate a tough section of
rocks, and saw the wallet, lodged between a couple of sharp edged rocks. he
said he damn near fainted when he opened the thing and saw my driver's
license.
i wonder what the odds are on that "find" taking place?

I must have heard that story three or four times by now, and it gets
better with each retelling. This is the first time you've mentioned

Took a friend surf fishing over on one of the barrier islands, Baldhead
Island, NC, about 15 years ago. Ricky was newlywed and young and poor. I
loaned him one of my favorite surf rods with an Ambassadeur 7000 reel and
extolled the virtures of a big baitcaster for Red Drum fishing. First cast,
Ricky is squealing and hollering that he has something. Things just did not
appear right. There seemed to be no fight in this fish, unlock the typical
Drum. Ricky keeps cranking and pulls in what appears to be a almost new and
in perfect shape Ambassadeur 10000 with a really nice 10 foot surf rod. He
picked it up and reeled in the line and there was a Drum rig all ready to
be baited and fished. It was a great day for him. The fishing god was
smiling. He still fishes that combo to this day.

Mr. Johnson is correct, if you have no paddle, you're going downstream

Once while trolling a shrimp net to gather bait on the way to an oil rig tie
up for fishing, we once got the bottom half of a human torso and legs in the
net, ****ed that day up. Damn coast guard and the Lousiana state police
wanted everything that day, not just the torso.

On a more positive note, found a bag once with nice flies and "smoking"
supplies, Gave the flies to a kid in the parking lot, didn't even try and
return the other stuff :)

Fishing the currents in front of Harford's camp on the Rapid, I hooked a yellow
fly line. I pulled on the upstream end and got a little bit of line and then
backing. After about 10 feet of backing, it snagged and I couldn't get it off.
I imagine there was a reel stuck between some rocks, but I couldn't get it.
I brought the line in with a figure 8 retrieve on my right hand. Got all of it
plus about 10 feet of hand tied leader. No fly, no reel, but I did remove a
mess from that river.

That's why I started this tread, though surly someone had found some of the

Mostly I decorate the trees with flys, calculated losses.
So far I have not had anyone break into my car but it is happening more and
more. I have an extended cab pickup and it's hard to lock things up in it.
I am going to get a big lockable metal tool box to go in the bed. I am
working on a quick bolt in -out system for it. Got any suggestions?
I also have stuff that is "lost" around the house. I have some double eyed
parachute hooks within 20 yars of me and I have been looking for them for a
couple of months..

How about the converse ? What's the best or strangest thing
you*lost* while fishing ? My candidates:

1. A very, very nice spinning gear combo: went over the
side of my boat while floating down the Niagara River
2. A fly box stuffed with about 40 streamers: lost on
the shore of the lower Genessee in Rochester, NY
3. A brand bew reel spool filled with backing and a
brand new Teeny line: in the parking lot at Nauset
Beach, Cape Cod
4. Another spinning rod, taken from my very obviously
unlocked car (it had those big lock buttons that stood
way up), about 200 yards from #1.

On the Salmon River (NY), I had a foam fly box of beautiful stoneflies,
hoppers, & a few other nice ties drift down to where I was standing. I went
as far as to look upstream for a fisherman frantically patting his vest; but
the rightful owner was not apparent among the hoarde. I still have the box
& most of the flies.

A few years later, same river, different spot, I turned around to see
something uncharacteristically shiny on the bottom. Managed to pick up a
good-as-new medium sized Penn spinning reel without getting my shirt wet.
Again, nobody nearby with an "oh ****" look. I still have that, too. I
took it down, dried it, cleaned it, & lubed it; but I'll probably just put
it on Ebay one of these days.
