Are there any trout in Texas
Hi,
I just accepted a offer from a company in Austin, Texas and will be relocating in the next couple of weeks. I am hoping that in the long list of differences between Austin and my home in the Northeast I don't have to include trout fishing. Is there any trout fishing in Texas and better yet in the greater Austin area? Paul |

The Guadelupe (sp?) river is stocked periodically but besides standing in it once about 6 years ago, I have no current knowledge of it's status. |

Is there any trout fishing in Texas and better yet in the greater Austin area? Paul Boy are you in for a surprise! there are no real trout in the state, but TU has it's largest chapter in the country in that area. The fishery is below the damn at Canyon Lake in the Guadelupe River. The last three state record stripers got to weigh over 50 pounds came from this area fter they had been eating the stocked trout.Your best contact from ROFF will probably be "Conan the Librarian" who lives in Wimberly. I spent about 8 years living in the Austin area but moved away about a decade ago. Town Lake in downtown Austin is one of the best bluegill fisheries in the state and you will have a chance to catch one that weighs more than 16 ounces from that water. The Austin Angler is one of the best flyshops in the country. You are going to love exploring the hill country and wet wading for bluegill, bass, and on a few streams catching Guadelupe Bass. Your 3 and 4 weight rods will get a good workout in the streams in the area. there were no FFF clubs in the area when I lived there, but there are now clubs in San Marcos and Austin as well as San Antonio. The fly tying show season in Texas is primarily on the local club level and starts with a great one in Houston on Sat. Feb 7 at the Holiday Inn at Antoine and I 10. we have a hell of a lot of fun at these events and If you can possibly make it over look me up as I will be there tying the Psychedelic Spiders and I will introduce you to a bunch of good folks. I will be easy to recognize as I will be the biggest guy at the show and I still look a lot like Jerry Garcia, only I am still breathing for now. Watch out for the heat in the summer 'cause if you are not used to it heatstroke is a possibility when it is 95 degrees and 95% humidity. Sell any vehicles without air conditioning before you move or you will take a beating on getting rid of them in Texas. It will take a while to adjust for the distances involved in this state. Most folks drive big pickups or SUV's cause it is common to drive 300 miles before we stop for breakfast when we are out playing for the weekend. Long distances require enough space to be comfortable for long periods of time. Big Dale |

Paul,
I think there's some tailwater stretches near Austin, on the Guadalupe (?). There are certainly some trout in Texas, but not any wild ones. Most Texans head to NM and CO, especially to the San Juan (they don't call it the Texas Hole for nothing!) for trout. San Juan Clave next December? bruce h |

On the other hand there's always the option to tell the wife and kids to run and then face the man bare handed (might sound stupid, but it depends solely on what knowledge you might have in that field). In any case, it is a very specific situation and not likely something that will happen to you (statistically), and as such a bad story/question/joke which only purpose seem to be to justify hand guns rather than separating political opinions/origins. /Roger Not a Democrat, Republican or Southerner... just a Swede ;-) |

Well Scott, I did my military service in the Swedish mountain Rangers and was taught under training for guard duty to aim for the legs if the opponent didn't stop or wasn't armed with a firearm. Add to that another four years of training Shotokan and actually learning to control my actions as far as my ability allows, I would not shoot to kill if unnecessary. /Roger But then again, I have not been in the specific situation and as such can only wish that I would act accordingly. |

I am hoping that in the long list of differences between Austin and my home in the Northeast I don't have to include trout fishing. Is there any trout fishing in Texas and better yet in the greater Austin area? BD did a nice job describing things in this area. I'll just add that the Guadalupe seems to be making a strong comeback after the "hundred-year flood" of last year. This flood had supposedly wiped out the trout that had been "summering-over" in the river. AFAIK, this is the only place in Texas where the water stays cool enough for trout to survive from one season to the next (it's a tailwater fed directly from the bottom of Canyon Lake), and until the floods caused the water to turn over, it was not uncommon for folks to catch some pretty big fish (the state record came from there and is something like 7 lbs.). Having said all that, these are still hatchery fish, so it's up to you whether you consider it worth your while. Most folks dredge with weight and SJ worms and/or glo-bugs and such, though the fellow at the Austin Angler told me the other day that some fish were being taken on top on Stimulators (?!). Basically, it seems that these fish respond best to anything with orange, red or yellow, and I'm sure a few tan/brown "Purina flies" would do the trick as well. I've been tying up a bunch of dry flies that incorporate red or orange, like the Sierra Bright Dot and will be giving them a try sometime next week. (I just can't really get into the bobber-fishing that most folks do around here.) If that's not your bag, but you want to still fish rivers/streams rather than lakes, you can always go to the upper Guadalupe. You can find a fair amount of wadeable water there, and you'll get a chance to fish for the native Guadalupe bass. These aren't your big-bellied largemouth, they are feisty little bass that tend to hang around water that looks almost like trout habitat. There are also largemouth and smallmouth in the river, and the setting is so beautiful that you'll almost forget you're in Texas. ;-) If you hang around here for a while, you'll probably find yourself getting into other warmwater species as well. If you simply don't like the idea of lake/reservoir fishing, there are still plenty of rivers in the area that should keep you interested. The Blanco, Pedernales, San Marcos can all be excellent (though access is sometimes limited because the majority of river frontage down here is privately-owned). They all have good populations of sunfish, bass and catfish, and they all respond to certain flies. Also, we fish pretty much year-round here, with the dog-days of summer normally being our "off-season". When you get here, check out the Austin Angler and the new Sportsman's Finest store for advice. I used to always recommend the A.A., but the fellow who probably knows more about fishing this area than anyone else (Joe Robinson) is at S.F. I would have assumed that with all those distances people would try to cover them as fast as they could get away with. The road must have been full. Seems like whenever I am in Houston the speed on the freeways is ether stop and go or flat out. Seriously, back in the 60's whenever I drove the road between Dallas and Austin there was always sone guy in a red Corvette that would pass me doing atleast 130. Can't happen now the road stays too full. I don't think most drive as fast as they did back then. I can't cause my reactions arn't what they were 40 years ago. I suspect that they still drive pretty fast out in the western part of the state at times. Otherwise it takes forever to get accross it. I think the DPS has more Cameros with nitrous bottles in the trunks in the populated areas than they used to and they can make speed more expensive to go fast. Those fines are much more than most of us paid for our cars back then. Still I do miss that old Roadrunner from time to time as the new Dodge Ram truck's hemi does not compare with the Roadrunner's. So would now be a good time to fish? It can be, depending on the weather fronts, etc. "Bluebird days" can be pretty tough, but we get enough moderate weather this time of year that you probably have a better chance of catching fish all day long than you would when the temps are in the 90's. And we're not that far from bass spawning season. Depending on water temps, they can start to move into the shallows in late February through March. Of course it's unethical to fish for them then, but they will be on the move. Bluegill fishing usually picks up around March, and catfishing gets better as the water continues getting warmer. (Yep, catfish will take flies. I've had good luck with brown woolly buggers on a couple of the local streams.) And there's a white bass run on the Pedernales that falls some time in March as well. Not a bad idea. As for the gear you'd want to bring: You can probably get by with a 6-wt. for most stream fishing (I usually use a 5 these days, but there are days when I wish I had a little more power to toss bigger flies or fight the winds). If you plan to fish bigger waters, you'll probably want an 8-wt. And definitely swing by the Sportsmans Finest store on Bee Caves Road near highway 71.
