Becky and I are going out to the Platte in Nebraska to look at half a

well...this seems as good a spot as any to post this...

"The earthquake that rocked the coast of Haiti killed or injured a
devastating number of people. Even more were left in need of aid, making
this is one of the great humanitarian emergencies in the history of the
Americas. In the aftermath of the disaster, President Barack Obama asked
President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush to raise funds for
immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts to help those who are
most in need of food, water, shelter, medical care, and support. In
response, the two Presidents established the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund
(CBHF) to identify and fulfill unmet needs in the region, foster
economic opportunity, improve the quality of life of those affected over
the long term, and assist the people of Haiti as they rebuild their
lives and country. Presidents Clinton and Bush oversee the CBHF through
their respective nonprofit organizations, the William J. Clinton
Foundation and Communities Foundation of Texas. One hundred percent of
the donations made to the Clinton Foundation go directly to relief
efforts. Ninety-nine percent of the donations made to the Communities
Foundation of Texas go directly to relief efforts."

Another explanation could be that the Clinton foundation has been
around longer and Clnton has had longer to raise funds to cover his
nut, (No pun intended) and he has been very successful as a fund
raiser. Bush has had only a year and has had a a slow start on the
lecture circuit. 1% isn't bad. And him pairing with Clinton is a good
thing both for Bush and for some healing to occur. I think Bush was
used by the radicals and the Neocons far more than he used them, and
Cheney, I believe history will show, was very disloyal and conniving.

Jeff,
I think the take-home message from Robertson's description should be, at the

seems that
God is working on a serious backlog, if he is just getting
around to rectifying pacts with the devil from the 19th century.

Well, the right Reverand Robertson is indoubtedly right in his
assertion that the Haitians made a bargain with the devil. I mean,
****, who hasn't? But god dwells in the details. What bargain with
which devil, when and under what circumstances, and what were the
terms? Mostly (if we are to give credence to the oral and literary
canons in virtually all cultures) the devil ain't real bright, and
ends up holding the ****ty end of the stick. Thus, the vast majority
of the bargains aren't even mildly interesting. But it would be fun,
and probably instructive, to hear of one in which old Nick actually
came out on top.

Meanwhile, gods don't trouble themselves much with the private
dealings of devils. They have enough on their minds already, what
with ennervated desperation over the inevitable fate that most
assuredly awaits them all. Think about it.....personal extinction is
a troublesome enough thing to contemplate for those of us who already
know that this is what eternity invariably holds for us. How much
more horrifying must it be for those whose job descriptions carry an
immortality clause (albeit one that has never yet been adhered to.)?
When you get right down to it, most gods, being prehistoric, like most
other species, never even leave any fossil remains. They ain't got
time to be worrying about devils and humans and robertsons and
haitians......they got legacies to build, incunabula to strew about,
holy books to dictate.

The Haitians.....well, they got hit by an earthquake, a seismic event
easily explicable (if not precisely predictble) via plate tectonics.
Sad. Indescribably sad. But no more or less so than when it happens
in any other place in the world.....and no more or less meaningful.

Depends on whether we're talking about any one or more of them being
charged with the responsibility of seeing to it that you accidentally
put cocktail sauce on your tamales instead of salsa or, instead, about
whether any one or more of them can be held accountable for having
made you do it. If the former, it's irrelevant because you just can't
make 'em live up to the terms of their contracts. If the latter, it's
irrelevant because culpability carries no enforceable consequences.

There had to
be some godly role in making both the salsa and cocktail sauce
containers identical.

Probably. But in all likelihood it wasn't intentional. Hell, they
can't tell sherry from amontillado. This is what comes of living on
burnt offerings, chicken guts, incense, infants, etc. Odds are they
just slather on heaps of whatever they can find to drown out the
flavor of the main course and never stop to look at the label.

I know they're busy and all that, but these
were good tamales.

I feel your pain, man. A tamale is a terrible thing to waste. But
they're immune to prosecution. Throughout the history of the world
(well, the first part, anyway) it has always been true that it's good
to be the king.

One of them has to have the job of looking out for
good food and taking care of it so the waiter doesn't spill it or the
top doesn't come off the salt shaker.

Of course, but which one? And what do you do when you find out? Call
him/her/it on the phone? All you get is some incomprehensible tech in
Sri Lanka or Pakistan (that is, in the unlikely event that you
actually do eventually get through to something bearing a reasonable
resemblence to a human being) who will, in the fulness of time, direct
you through a series of gyrations that will inevitably trash your
entire pantry.....and melt down your motherboard as well.

Aside from "being," they do have jobs, right?

No one has yet demonstrated that there's any good reason to be sure
about that. We rest content in the certain knowledge that at least
the continued existence of the question ensures that philosophers and
theologians will remain gainfully (if not necessarily usefully)
employed.

Which one to I poke to make this freezing fog that
has enveloped my house for the last six days go away?

No way to know. Just poke one and see what happens. Then poke
another.....and another.....

again and said that God had sent me. I told her that may be, but she
had just been assisted by an athiest Democrat. With a pained and
confused look on her face, she replied: "Well, thank you anyway."

By the way, today I jumpstarted a lady's car in a grocery store
parking lot. I was the only one around with jumper cables so came to
her aid. She "blessed" me profusely, which I figured was going to
happen as she had Rapture, Bush/Cheney and Rush Limbaugh stickers all
over the back of her Taurus. As we got the car running she blessed me
again and said that God had sent me. I told her that may be, but she

I just love it when people come to the aid of other people!

Good on ya Mr. Reid for assisting and informing her that good people don't
necessarily conform to preconceived notions.

that's what he said...a real, honest to badness, bargain...made more than
a century ago, and they are now reaping the consequences. so, uh, i reckon
it's all god's doing...another great heavenly lesson about negotiations..
that'll teach them to be friendly and outgoing and musical, especially
those infants and children.

Jeff,
I think the take-home message from Robertson's description should be, at the
very least, reassuring to those of us who are run-of-the mill sinners. It
seems that
God is working on a serious backlog, if he is just getting
around to rectifying pacts with the devil from the 19th century.

Satan's letter to Pat Robertson

...
As "reported" by Lily Coyle in the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

Dear Pat Robertson,

I know that you know that all press is good press, so I appreciate the
shout-out. And you make God look like a big mean bully who kicks people
when they are down, so I'm all over that action.

But when you say that Haiti has made a pact with me, it is totally
humiliating. I may be evil incarnate, but I'm no welcher. The way you put
it, making a deal with me leaves folks desperate and impoverished. Sure,
in the afterlife, but when I strike bargains with people, they first get
something here on earth -- glamour, beauty, talent, wealth, fame, glory, a
golden fiddle. Those Haitians have nothing, and I mean nothing. And that
was before the earthquake.

Haven't you seen "Crossroads"? Or "Damn Yankees"? If I had a thing going
with Haiti, there'd be lots of banks, skyscrapers, SUVs, exclusive night
clubs, Botox -- that kind of thing. An 80 percent poverty rate is so not
my style. Nothing against it -- I'm just saying: Not how I roll.

You're doing great work, Pat, and I don't want to clip your wings --
just, come on, you're making me look bad. And not the good kind of bad.
Keep blaming God. That's working. But leave me out of it, please. Or we
may need to renegotiate your own contract.

Best, Satan

JR,

I am lifting your letter from Satan to Pat for my Pat Robertson is a
psychopath Facebook page--I hope you don't mind, much.

Hm........

I can't think of anything I like about the Rev., except maybe the fact
that he's likely to die before most of the rest of the current human
population of the planet. He is repulsive in so many ways and to such
a degree that one could wax tiresome in enumerating and quantifying
all of them. But, stupid? The evidence is equivocal at best.

cheers

Last I heard, there's Baptists and singing atheists pretty much all
over the world. You queried all of them?
