I greatly appprecuiate all the help and suggestions from ROFF.

We are going on her first fishing trip, in July, down the Middle Fork Salmon
River in Idaho -
-Floating it for 6 days - in July

We are gonna have a great time!
Iit will be an easy first trip.

She is a sweet, smart and loveable kid.

Now to start looking for a "boat fiddle" - a cheap one that I can take
fishing or use as an oar -

If you stop in Stanley (and you probably will) give me a shout out.

The Middle Fork is a great float. I've done it several times. You'll
get wet.

Congrats, Fred. I envy you. Hey, wasn't it me that suggested the
float on the Middle Fork? d;o)

My #2 grandson and I flew into a forest ranger airfield on the Middle
Fork (by the foot bridge) with a guide and spent 3 days fishing for
cuts and bows. We slept under the stars, something my grandson has
never done before. Beautiful spot.

Have fun.

or
Where would you stay w 3 people for a night?

I'll take you to the Rod & Gun for some local color. :-)

Most of the outfitters put their clients up in the Mountain Village,
which is a pretty basic motel. Don't eat at the restaurant -- go to
the Stanley Bakery or to Elk Mountain, which is the best bang for the
buck. Woolley's in Lower Stanley is a good spot for burgers and for
sitting on the deck watching ospreys feasting on stocker trout in the
Salmon River. Redfish Lodge is a very nice place to stay and has a
good restaurant.

You can check out other accommodations at the Stanley Chamber of
Commerce web site. Don't delay -- rooms book up early for July, the
peak season.

I'm planning on building a new house in July, and I don't have room
for you in my small existing cabin. If it were the next year you'd be
welcome to stay with me.

There's no food at the Rod&Gun. The Kasino Klub down the street isn't
bad.

It will take at least 6 hours from Missoula. Probably more.

Floating the Middle Fork is on my Bucket list, Fred, but I can not do
it this year. A friend and his brother have mentioned doing it next
year. Might take my 21 yo grand daughter.

Enjoy your grand children, Fred. They are surely a blessing. Take
them on as many fishing trips that you can afford. The lasting
memories, pictures, and videos will be worth it.

Hi Fred,
I'm getting excited for you and your grand daughter as I'm reading your
post.
For what it is worth; we make a point of stopping at a shop with my kids (8
&10) to buy the "prize" for the first fish... a Mars Bar.

The rules.
1. Can't eat it before the end of the day!
2. The one who catches the first fish gets the Mars Bar... but you have to
share it with everyone present.
3. Don't forget to buy the Mars Bar before you get to the river.
4. Not allowed to catch a fish before dad... (this one is still up for
discussion; but it sure puts a glint in their eyes!)

This works well for us.

Have a great time mate.

Rob.
