Coming out of hibernation...
....blame it on the long miserable winter causing me to lose a few more
brain cells, why else would I come back here? Unless of course roff is a condition similar to alzheimers, it gets worse with age and I sure ain't gettin any younger. To start with a clean slate, apologies to those who I might have ****ed off in the past and might do so again in the future. Lessee, went all the way to California to visit my Navy son, and on the last day there fell and broke my ankle. This afforded a nearly $2000 visit to the local emergency room (this small Coast Guard base only has a clinic, no MD) The best part was instead of returning on AMTRAK as ticketed, I got to fly home on SWA with curb to curb wheel chair service, board first even before the little kids, heck, even TSA was a pleasant experience. Going to WallyWorld shopping has been fun too, riding in the electric cart it's amazing how many ladies offer to help retrieve something from the shelf, sporting a "cripple" sticker in the windshield gets me hassle free parking too. I'm seriously considering breaking the other ankle just so I can drag this fun out a little longer. And, oh yeah, turned 77 last month so you whippersnappers show a little respect. Sore ankle and all, I put new tires on the boat trailer, repaired a leaky pontoon on the WaterSkeeter and took the Merc in for a tune-up. The ice is out here so it won't be long before I begin pestering the local bluegills and bass. Planning a trip to Maine this summer to float the Androscoggin with my fishin' bud up there, gonna rip some smallmouth lips. OK, consider yourselves caught up whether you wanted it or not. Frank Church Fremont, Indiana Great to see ya back and very glad to know you are still with us both physically and mentally! I agree to be a kinder and gentler ROFFian too, so long as we avoid the political nonsense and socially sensitive discussions--cannot promise to remain civil if such post go off the deep end, though I will do my bestest. Saw Jennifer the other week, she asked about ya. She completed her masters program a couple of years back and is working at AppState as an instructor--not a professor, yet. I also hope to complete my program in May and go into economic development or become an assistant town manager or something or other. Fished the wild trout waters of Upper Creek and the delayed harvest section of Wilson Creek on Friday. Not much luck on Upper Creek, but Wilson Creek was a blast with nothing less than 14 inch bows and brookies. I started out with a dry fly, but quickly converted to nymphing, after watching my fishin' buddy haul in fish after fish on his dropper rig. I gotta new fishin' hound, Bear, and he is absolutely a nut case and the best fishin' hound on the face of the Earth. He don't much care for the water, but has an affliction that requires him to be by my side at all times, so he wades in regardless of the temps! He is actually my 76 year old mother's protector, but I try to keep him in good physical shape by taking him with me whenever possible--fishin' and campin'. I posted a few pics of Bear and me on Upper and Wilson Creeks, plus a few fly pics. http://www.flickr.com/photos/47362605@N07/ take care and very happy to see ya back, Op |

You old rascal. Where the hell have you been? Really missed you, Frank.
A bit of advice: Never, ever, apologize to the nitwits that haunt this place. We are all crazy, and crazy folks don't apologized to one another. Joanne and I have bought a winter home in the mountains of north Georgia. I couldn't take another winter of two foot snow storms followed by another one footer, etc. Grandson #2 is house sitting in Massachusetts (which now has a Republican Senator!), shoveling snow and running his father's super market. A plus: fishing in the winter, and I'm not talking ice fishin'. d;o) I am sure the smallies on the Andy will shudder when you arrive. Joanne and I will be in the Rangely lakes region from late May until sometime in July. If you have a day or two, please come visit and I'll show you some big brookies and enormous landlocked salmon. You hang in there, Frank. And you did nothing wrong to leave for such a long period of time. Welcome back, you old fart. Dave |

I don't know about the Beck thingy, but Fortenberry has called himself a progressive for as long as I can remember, and his ideas are very socialistic/communistic. I use progressive in that sense - Fortenberry is a progressive, not a liberal. Listen to music? Have you tried Pandora.com? I have several artists set up on it and it is always on. I have several artists set up on it and it is always on. Brubeck/Mulligan/Davis/Gilberto, etc. OMG! They're gotten to Dave! Brubeck is an icon of progressive jazz. splork Joćo Gilberto or Astrud Gilberto? Both! Astrud's daughter is now singing and she is better than her mother. First heard her at a fishing lodge during dinner. She has several albums now. I prefer Astrud, but Joćo is great, too. Astrud is always a little off-key, off-syncopation, uncertain of English lyrics, thoroughly amateurish, and natively adorable in her voice and phrasing. The sets they did with Stan Getz are inspired. Getz/Gilberto. A classic. An earlier classic was Sergio Mendez and Brazil 66. Joanne and I enjoyed Rio when we went to a IEEE conference in 84. We went to samba clubs every night about 10 and would stay until 1 or 2 in the morning listening and dancing. Great stuff. Dave |

I wonder if you guys might like Gilberto Gil? Not really the same kind of music but great Brazilian music none the less. One of my favorite Brazilian artist is Roberta Miranda. I love the sound of her voice. My wife can't stand her. Says her lyrics are hokey. I can't understand a word she says anyway. I don't speak Portuguese. I just like her voice and music. Truth be told, I seldom pay much attention to lyrics anyway. My daughter thinks that's why I like opera. Russell It may have been Miranda who I heard on sat radio not too long ago. There are several "Astrud-like" performers out there. Astrud's daughter (Bebe?) has several albums and is much better than her mom. Great music nonetheless. I'll have to look into Miranda. Thanks for the info. Dave |

I'm not familiar with Roberta Miranda. I'll check it out. Thanks. Try Susannah McCorkle. She's an Anglo who sang Brazilian. She died a tragic suicide. If lyrics aren't your cup of tea you might not like her, but I do. McCorkle and Waters of March. Fantastic tune. I didn't know she had killed herself. Tragic indeed. She was a great artist, although I presently don't have any of her recordings. Dave |

"Frank Church" wrote in message . 207.167... Nah, Dave's a pretty easy going guy Tom, and regularly beats my butt at catching the most/biggest bass. (with one or two exceptions) Frank Sr so I thought, but the dude gets to foaming at the mouth when I show up on certain fora.......Shame, too, as my opinion of both his character and intellect were high, but he's gotten a bit close-minded with age. At any rate, I hope you all have a great fishing trip, and, like I say, wish him well for me, but stand back when doing so. Tom |

oh, and Frank........sorry to have turned your out of hibernation thread into a jazz discussiong. For the Pirate: Thanks for the info. Generally, my listening falls into two catagories. If used for background, I have satellite radio feed into stereo via DAC to upgrade sound quality. For serious listening, vinyl still rules, although, with a new universal player that does DVD-A and SACD, the little discs get more play than they once did. If it was up to me, I would probably not even own a TV. But, then, my wife would probably do me in...... Tom |

I'm old enough to be enough of a luddite to be tempted to believe them but.....when queried their responses smell an awful lot like "political discussions" on ROFF. giles who has long longed to be a believer......but, in what? |

Frank Church Fremont, Indiana Glad to see you back...I hope...and while I'm sorry to hear about the accident - what is it about you Frank types - glad to hear about the recovery. TC, R |
