A widely held attitude in many to some degree. The current flux in the
Repubs is not unprecedented an will play it's way out over some time.
The young leaders with great ideas and plans are still getting known
and building a following. It could turn out very well.

The current iteration of the Dems is so far gone it may be moot
anyway. When Pelosi and Reid and some of the other race baiters and
hate mongers are in charge, there is no other choice.

And once again Davey proves he is not capable of getting the drift and is as
worthy of his intellect as is Sarah Palin.

Poor Davey, couldn't figure out that I was making a statement about the
Republican party's lack of *actual* political leadership.

Also Davey doesn't understand that Limbaugh is only an entertainer, if you

I'd love to know the real provenence of this one. I've seen it cited, in
variations, to Churchill, P.J.O'Rourke, and a few others. The common
variation is: If you're young and not a Democrat, you have no heart. If

Another misattributed quote. See http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Winston_Churchill
under "Misattributed Quotes".

It wasn't Churchill at all, and, in fact, one of the sources in the
above article (reproduced below) says it is unlikely Churchill would
have said any such thing.

From the above article, the quote actually is " If you're not a
liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a
conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain.
According to research by Mark T. Shirey, citing Nice Guys Finish
Seventh: False Phrases, Spurious Sayings, and Familiar Misquotations
by Ralph Keyes, 1992, this quote was first uttered by mid-nineteenth
century historian and statesman François Guizot when he observed, Not
to be a republican at 20 is proof of want of heart; to be one at 30 is
proof of want of head. This quote has been attributed variously to
George Bernard Shaw, Benjamin Disraeli, Otto von Bismarck, and others.
Furthermore, the Churchill Centre, on its Falsely Attributed
Quotations page, states "there is no record of anyone hearing
Churchill say this." Paul Addison of Edinburgh University is quoted as
stating: "Surely Churchill can't have used the words attributed to
him. He'd been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he
have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie, who is generally thought to
have been a lifelong Liberal?""

actually, Joe has my utmost respect for a few reasons. First, he has served
honestly, and with dignity, the State of Delaware for years. He never did it
to get rich, get famous or aggrandize himself in any way. Unlike a lot of

As sort of a joint reply to you both...

First, Louie...Joe Biden has become a modern public figure and the VPOTUS, so
his every word, letter, email, phone call and fart is subjected to "sound bite
scrutiny" by every dip**** who managed to get a press pass and further
"analyzed" by every dingleberry with a blog or other 'net outlet who managed to
read the aforementioned "scrutiny." And no, no real reporter/journalist has any
interest in the minutiae of his every utterance and move. So, um, big ****in'
deal - he's human and occasionally makes human mistakes.

That said, Tom...I haven't bothered in the past, nor do I intend at this point
to do any in-depth research into Joe Biden's entire life. I'll take your word
that he is a more-or-less honest pol (at least as pols generally go). And from
what I've seen, he seems to be basically that as well as reasonably sharp guy.
That said, one particular issue I have with him is that _he_ said - not a
"surrogate"/shill/"spokesperson" - that _he_ didn't think Obama was qualified to
be Prez, as well as other statements in a similar vein. He also said,
basically, that he and John McCain were the only two people running that were
fit to be elected. Yet, when Obama called, he joined up. We can debate the
accuracy of those statements Obama being qualified (or "ready," IIRC), but I
think we can agree that assuming Biden was correct/accurate/knew of what he was
speaking and Obama wasn't ready to be Prez in mid-to-late 2007, a few more
months of technically being a first-term US Senator while mostly campaigning for
the job he wasn't ready for wouldn't likely make him (or anyone else) ready. I
have no idea of why he decided to join with Obama - personal ambition, a genuine
desire to help, or whatever reason, nor will I make guesses in this context.

And really, I don't care why anymore than I care about him occasionally letting
a clanger drop. It's done - he's VP, Obama is Prez, and if Obama wasn't ready
before, he will be as "ready" as any person in 2012 - the job may not "lend
itself to on-the-job training," (IIRC, pretty close to Biden's words) but he'll
have gotten it regardless. At that point, the only question will be, "does he
deserve/merit another term?" And I'd hope we would agree that it is simply too
early to tell.

RDean brought up what I was about to: Biden said at one of the debates
between the Dem canidates that Obama was not ready to be president,
that he lacked the necessary experience. When Obama was selected as
the Dem's candidate, Biden accepted the offer to run as veep. THAT
showed lack of character.

Yeah, Biden was fortunate that DC isn't too far from Delaware and could
return during personal tragedy. I couldn't do that for 20 years. I
had an uncle die, the man that taught me hunting and gun safety. I was
in Japan. He was like a father. I had to grieve alone and not with my
parents and aunt. My first wife's dad died while I was in the Azores
during the Cuban missle crisis. We were short handed and had to go to
a three section watch. I couldn't escort my wife and daughter to his
funeral. I had to grieve alone.

During Clinton's years, wasn't it you and others that said character
doesn't matter? BTW, I'd druther Clinton than any other Dem.

Doesn't sound like "success" from here - sounds more like someone who

Money is only part of it, Tom. A stupid man does not get rich
honestly, unless it is by the lottery. I won no lottery. I worked
hard and invested.

I think I have had a very successful life, first and foremost because
of my children. A man could not have two finer kids than my girls.
They in turn have become very successful and have raised some kids with
the potential to also be successful. I leave this world far better
than I found it knowing that they will flourish and help others.

Biden acts like an idiot, Tom. He makes Quayle look like a genius.
What was it he said recently about the veep office......"It's like
being a grandfather. I don't have anything to do." Really?

Here's but one opinion, Tom, before I head out for work:

"In my humble opinion, success cannot be measured in the material
things that I have, nor can it be measured by my job title (and I have
a lot of those). To me, success is an inside job. To be successful you
must FEEL successful on the INSIDE.

"You can have all the money, houses and status that you like, but if
you do not FEEL successful on the inside, then you will feel like a
hamster running on it’s wheel in a cage. You’ll be chasing success all
your life and will never achieve it.

"Easy for me to say right?

"Listen, I’ve been in your shoes and have been on the brink of despair
many times. I have been in the eye of the storm more times that I care
to count. I have lived through a dark childhood, I have seen negative
numbers in my bank account, and I have seen the loss of both my parents
to name a few. I made it through to the other side because I never gave
up, and I decided to change how I felt about it all.

"You see when life gets you down and throws you to the ground, you have
two choices … you can lie down there and wallow in it and feel sorry
for yourself, or you can get up. I chose to get up."

Well said, Katherine Giovanni.

And I intend to continue to rise inspite of all the stones thrown at me
on this forum.

I've never said character doesn't matter. Ever. That was my issue with
Clinton, especially insofar as he allowed character flaws(we all have 'em)
to interfere with the effectiveness of his Presidency. That said, I'd take
Clinton, flaws and all, over what Bush did to the nation.

Among Louie's many "endearing" qualities is the tendency to play
"drama queen".

doubt you will find many men as generous as I. And many on roff know

Ah...so THAT explains why there are no wealthy "liberals"...

You've really gotta feel for folks like Barbra Streisand and George Soros, what
with unselfishly being willing to make do with only a mega-mansion or two and
occasionally having to wash down the Royal Ossetra with less-than-perfect
vintages of bubbly while jetting to one of the yachts' current moorings on
anything less than a G4...I've always kinda suspected it was pretty easy to
support all sorts of spending that really wouldn't affect one's own standard of
living...

You are so full of ****, Fortenberry, I can smell it down here. I

Or of greater modesty, apparently...

Yeah, I know...I doubt it will help,
