Cabela's or Bass Pro dozen flies - any good?

Anyone have any experience with the Cabela's or Bass Pro by-the-dozen
trout flies like elk hair caddis or hare's ears? Are they prone to
breaking or falling apart?

Thanks,

Peter

Hi Peter,

I have not purchased them by the dozen. Most of my
Adams are from Cabela's -- some from the local fly
shop.

My Cabela's Adams are from a vendor called
"Umpqua". Three per box. They are sharper than
hell. They take about five munch downs by the
object of my obsession before they start showing
signs of wear. Their eyes are flush and smooth at
the crimp, so my leader does not get sliced by the
crimp, which makes a huge hit with me. I will
usually loose them in the rocks or the lip of a
fish before they completely wear out -- I keep
using them, they still work. I sometimes wonder
if the messed up ones work better than the new ones.

If you purchase a dozen of them, I would love
to know how they turn out.

Remember to retie your leader after every five fish
or so. I don't and I loose a lot of my flies in
trout lips. (I "may" say a bad word or two when that
happens. Maybe.)

Both Cabela's and Bass Pro are on the low end.....not that there's
anything wrong with that. I would imagine they sell a good product.
Otherwise, they wouldn't have the good names they enjoy. I, otoh, tend
to buy my flies (if I don't tie them) from my local fly shop. I buy
my special flies from Harry Mason who used to haunt this forum. Harry
runs Troutflies.com and does an excellent job. His website
http://troutflies.com/ displays his products. His "proven caddis
killer" and "cdc and elk" hair caddis are both worth their weight in
gold. His prices are competitive, his service superb, and his flies
catch fish. I have given the above flies to novices on my home waters
and watched them catch fish. Harry sells by the dozen, btw.

Give him a look-see.

My fly shop sells "Umpqua". Do a Google if you do
not believe me. For a commercial production line fly,
I have always found them to be of good quality. And,
they do catch fish.

I think you are just being quarrelsome.

By way, your http://troutflies.com/ is a really, really
good tip. They have a lot of nice stuff. See, I can
appreciate your work, ever why you are acting like

Umpqua is a good brand. And from all accounts Harry's ARE special. My

Harry flies online are proven by me in many circumstances esp for
local fat rainbows.
The price is definitely reasonable esp in volume
Our local fish use similar flies but
in other places

Problem is I buy flies from regional and local tyers 1 or 2 or 3 at a
time

I would also consider Cabelas and Bass Pro at the low end made in Sri
Lanka where the earth is already impoverished and the labor laws are
non existentent
Gov't regs do not exist and the labor pool is ridiculous much less
local pollution regs...

Not really, Dave. I'm having a good time with this jerk. I figure
he's a red herring of sorts. If he came out of the closet I'd back
off. But......... d;o) He posts silly stuff in an idiotic manner and
then refers to scientific papers. The two do not match. Reminds me of
a train station hanger-on, if you get my drift.

OTT, on my way up to the Rapid for a couple of days in camp. Probably
won't fish because of warm water, but it is heaven just being there
sitting on the porch breathing the air and listening to the loons and
watching Jenny chase red squirrels.

Aha!

Methinks YOU are the one trying to cause trouble. The link was
http://troutflies.com/
You have to click on the menu two times to get to Ken Iwamasa. (?????
Huh????)

What do you get at http://troutflies.com/ ?

Bring up the link and you get a letter from "Harry." Well, duh!
Harry must be the owner. Ken *ties* for Harry, as do other tyers. Al
Beaty used to be a roffian. Probably left to save his sanity. Don't
know Bob Krumm or Jason Haddix, but if Harry endorsed them, they have

How old are you, Todd? Sometimes you act very young, so young that you
just might be that 11 yo girl at the site you posted. Or perhaps as
expat living in Yourup somewhere?

Forgot to add: What are you hiding by being anonymous? At least your
isp/e-mail is legit. Can't say that about Todd. Anonymity is ok but
not being able to communicate with a poster via e-mail is just a little
bit suspicious.

Did it ever dawn on you Oz that Todd is a red herring, someone who used
to post in this nuthouse and is just out to have fun with roff? His
language and the way he expresses himself is juvenile (fake), yet quite
familiar. You probably haven't been around long enough to know of what

Not that it desperately needed to be done, but you can at least take
pride in demonstrating consistently that abject stupidity isn't just a
