Discount on Loomis and Winston Rods
I'm not associated with the fly shop, but I thought some here might be
interested in the fact that Creekside Angler in Issaquah WA has given up on selling Loomis and Winston rods, and has several rods for sale at 40% discount. I can't remember all the models, but the Loomis rods are GLX, and include a 12wt and a 9'3wt 2 piece that as sweet as rod as I've ever handled. The Winstons are BL5 in 8 or 9 wt, I think. I'm going on a salt water trip with RW and Bruiser from ROFF late Spring. I need both 8 weight and 10 weight outfit (these are two suggested by Bruiser) we'll be fishing for bonefish, baby tarpon and whatever else we find. I'm new to this. I assume you meant this to be email to somebody, but where I was in Belize there were tarpon that would be too much (in my opinion) for a 10wt. I used mostly a 7wt and 9wt for bonefish and an 11wt for tarpon, but I think an 8wt for bonefish would be better all around than a 7wt or 9wt. Of course, you could just not cast to big tarpon if you see one, but that might be difficult. g Have a great trip. -- Charlie... |

I agree with the 8 weight ('cuz that's what I use for bones ;-) As for the tarpon, I hooked four on my 8 weight and watched them all just keep cruising 'til I ran out of backing. When I go back I'm bringing a 12wt. They weren't "babies" though - unless baby tarpon are five feet long... /daytripper |

I need both 8 weight and 10 weight outfit (these are two suggested by Bruiser) we'll be fishing for bonefish, baby tarpon and whatever else we find. I'm new to this. I generally fish a 9 foot rod and would prefer a three or four piece so it's easier to fly with. Prefer a faster rod when pushing bigger flies but not super fast. Maybe a Temple Forks? or ? Reels I have no idea but from what I hear I need something good that won't burn up. I'd also look to use the outfits for Steelhead and/or Salmon (something else I'm going to do this year). What can you put together for me - rod, reel, line, that will be decent and serviceable? Maybe a couple options? I'm not a wealthy man but understand buying quality. How much for both outfits shipped to me? Willi Willi, If you go with Temple Fork rods, and are looking for a faster action, I would go with the new TiCr line. I have both the TiCr and the older Sal****er(now Professional Series)version rods. The TiCr is noticeably faster. Also, it's my understanding that the butt sections are beefier on the 8wt and up TiCr. brians |

Also, it's my understanding that the butt sections are beefier on the 8wt and up TiCr. brians I strongly second this recommendation. I was pleased when I tested the Professional Series. It's a good buy for the money. The TiCr is another step up and well worth looking at. I wound up buying it after taking both rods out to test cast. I've fished four days since I bought the TiCr last week. The wind has averaged 10-15 mph and reached over 35, The rod lays the line out like a cannon, exceeds my ability to use to its fullest capability and most likely will for another year or so until I can overcome some flaws in my self-taught technique. I'm thrilled with it. I took the first corrective lessons Sat & Sun. -- Stev Lenon 91B20 '68-'69 Drowning flies to Darkstar http://web.tampabay.rr.com/stevglo/i...age92kword.htm |

I think your normal trout fishing outfits will work fine, but waders
and felt soles will look kinda funny down there. bruce h You know, polarized glasses, baseball cap, nylon shirt etc. :-) remove x to reply |

Pictures? I for one would love to see some tarpon pics from ROFF regulars (or irregulars). A big tarpon on a fly is still my #1 unfulfilled fishing dream. This guy has nothing whatsoever to do with ROFF other than he flyfishes, but you should check out the tarpon pics at his site: http://www.flyfishingtexas.com The guy's name is Scott Graham, and he is a guide and "trophy-hunter" on the fly rod. The tarpon he caught was measured at over 7' long and estimated at 200+ lbs. Evidently, during the course of the fight, the fish first broke his rod and then his reel, and he wound up hand-lining the thing in. Chuck Vance |
