Barry, this is what is known as SPAM. There is no surer way to insure
a reputation as a scumbag and a moron than to post crap like this to
roff. This is not the place for you to advertise, it will do far more
harm to your business than good.

Now, if you want to contact me via email I might consider giving your
new site a professional critique, at my usual fee, of course.

Hi everyone,

I've been a fisherman ever since I was able to walk, so it's only natural for
me to want more from my hobby. After months of trial and error, I finally
located a wholesaler that would sell to me with no minimum. I've started a
website - intheboat.com and would appreciate any input on how I might improve
the useability of it.

Please note any of the following or others you might recognize a need for:
1.) ease of navagation
2.) overall feel
3.) does anything not make sense
4.) colors
5.) layout and design
6.) what other stuff would make nice additions (e.g. forum, tutorials, etc...)
7.) produces you would like to see available
I'm trying to make this a good place to get supplies and establish myself as a
reputable website owner.

Thanks for your help. Please contact me directly with any feedback at

Several comments:
1) The statement that you want replies via email rather than reply posts to this
thread indicates slimey spam. Unless you're going to stick around in the
newsgroup, this is, as Ken stated, just spam. On the assumption that you truly
want some feedback. . .
2) You need an "About Us" page so people know with whom they're dealing.
3) Pictures are needed for all of the items you're selling. It looks like you're
working on that.
4) Many of the categories are near-empty, and I get the impression you're not
*really* starting a business, but just expanding a hobby. There's no sense
launching the site until there's stuff in it. You'll discourage people from ever
returning this way.

Sorry guys my intention was not to spam but receive genuine response from the
fly fishing community. I want my site to be a place where people can find the
information they seek. If you can provide ideas on information you would like
to see that would be appreciated. If all you want to do is flame and accuse
people of spamming than that is your right. However, I want REAL fly fisherman
to tell me what information they would like to see on my site.

Well of course you do, you ignorant dumb ****, but you're not
gonna find many people here willing to do your marketing research
for you for free.

You think you've found the mother lode, a captive audience of
fly fishermen ready, willing and able to help a nice guy out
with his new business. Think again, scumbag. We all pay for our
little slice of the Usenet pie just so we can avoid freeloaders
like you.

Take your SPAM and shove it, asshole.

Since you've already been insulted by the usual ROFF net nannies, I'll
give you my opinion in public.

My first impression was that it's a well designed site. I'm unlikely to
buy anything, though, because I already have quite a few sources I'm
comfortable with. You're getting into this game late, and I think you'll
have a struggle to capture eyeballs, but good luck.

For future reference, you should avoid posting anything that could even
remotely be construed as "spam" on ROFF, unless you have a very thick
skin, or unless you become a "regular." :-)

Now, what was the GD difference between your "constructive opinion" and my

The following photo, which was taken right outside my front door, shows
the kind of goat lovers we welcome in Stanley:

http://www.ruralnetwork.net/~troutbum/web/goat.jpg

That's my dog Arlo in the bottom of the photo, for those of you who have
been privileged to meet him. He really liked that dead goat.

BTW, the goat (rump roast) was delicious. I can post a superb goat
recipe if anyone is interested.

If it's goat-friendly scenery you desire, you can hike not far from
town, into the Sawtooth Mountains, to Goat Lake:

http://www.ruralnetwork.net/~troutbum/web/goatlake.jpg

Finally BTW, North American Mountain Goats aren't really goats. They're
antelopes, like the European Chamois. The North American Pronghorn
Antelope, however, are actually goats. Evolution is complicated.

If somebody on roff says Orvis Wonderline is the greatest thing since
sliced bread, you may think he's never fly fished with anything else,
you may think he's an idiot, you may think he's right smack-dab on the

Wonderline because we, and I mean me, do not ever, never, ever, never

Sorry to piggyback on your message, but what's going on here didn't sink in
'til later. It would appear that the topic has
changed. . .

1. Spam is an unwanted solicitation to buy something. I did not see that
the original poster asked anyone to BUY anything. Spam is NOT just anything
posted that one doesn't like or happens to disagree with.

2. When a brother of the angle asks for a little advice or help, I think it
should be given in the nature in which it was asked. Intimidation and
name-calling are off topic.

3. Civil discourse is sadly lacking in our society. It is possible to
disagree with someone without resorting to profanity and name-calling.
Those are the weapons of bullies, and surely we have more than enough of
those. Perhaps there is a newsgroup called alt.shrill.cuss.bully.infantile,
for those who insist on taking that tack. We are here to discuss fly
fishing. I think it takes more maturity to exercise restraint and remain
silent, than to twist an innocent post into something it isn't.

4. Barry, you don't deserve to be flamed. Your site looks very
professional, but the products are a bit sparse (understandably, for a new
business) in a few departments. Good luck to you in your venture, it is
obviously a labor of love.

Making a post that does nothing but direct the group to a retail site borders
*really* close to spam, although I choose to think the feller was really just

Being a lame and pathetic numskull isn't particularly admirable either
and given a choice between being an accomplished put-down artist or a
pathetic numskull I know which side of the coin I'd rather be on.

So, being in a magnanimous mood this morning, please allow me this
small bit of tutelage in the fine art of the insult. Lou's admonition
to Warren doesn't really work because it's not constructed properly.
Try this instead; "Warren, you are aware of course that in engaging

Now see, isn't that much better ? Let that be a lesson to you.
