the demise of rec.outdoors.fishing.fly is a tragic certainty. there may be
some reflexive flips and flops, not unlike the last gasps of a rainbow in
the rocks and sand up on hazel creek, but you can mark it down as gone; long
gone.

that truth troubles me as much as anyone. but, there you have it.

Well, why don't you go fishing with me and jeffy in Maine come next
June? A good trip report would help.

Yeah, like buggy whips, full service gas stations and phone booths
Usenet is dead and, for all practical purposes, gone.

It was fun while it lasted.

Jeff, Indian Joe and I discussed this on Penns Creek one day. The
toxicity of this place certainly has contributed to driving people
away from ROFF. Ranting is fine, and disagreeing is fine. But this
place slipped into just plain ugly from time to time.
I know – leave if you don’t like the place….

toxicity that does the trick. Look at religion.....ANY

Hi there, Speaking of death prediction, I find it really odd that one
of the on-line death prediction services showed me the same death date
that I was foretold in my dream about a year ago. http://yourdeathdate.info
- I can’t explain this coincidence in any other way except that there
must be some kind of magic involved here.

....most of the daily fishing chatter has migrated over to any one of
a zillion moderated "forums" where toxic posts (perhaps some sadistic
torturing Mike Xyz, by exploiting personal foibles and weaknesses)
immediately get deleted.

This provides a veneer of civility. People learn that toxic posts get
deleted, so they don't make them in the first place. That doesn't mean
they are, in general, civil. Given access to a place like ROFF,
they'll quickly revert to Lord of the Flies behavior. The veneer of
civility is, however, better than the alternative. No?

No!

I state my case again, if your Socialist, censorship "forums" are so much
better than Usenet, why the hell are you still posting here?

That's right....I forgot, you have migrated over to any one of a zillion
moderated "forums" where toxic posts (i.e. postings that don't follow
party ideology...I mean forum standards) immediately get deleted.

The veneer of civility (censorship)is, however, better than the
alternative (free speech). No?

Ahh, for the good old days, when we were all young and bitey. I look
back in fondness at the many hours, days, and weeks of wasted time
here - ****ing contests with Gherke, attempts to have a civil
conversation with Mo Skeeter and later RDean, and real, true

anonymous trolls, hilarity, wit and actual useful information, shared
flies, lies, and ryes - it was all good, but probably better gone and
buried in the archives. It was fun while it lasted. We should never
