Very nice looking fish. Looks like it will be a very nice place when the
vegetation sprouts.

Nice shots, and some nice fish Willi. I'm puzzled by the white spots
on the rocks in the last picture. Did ypouo push the saturation, and
the dry spots went white?

I hope the turkeys don't take the fish out of this stretch. Maybe it's
catch and release.

up might just have to enjoy pictures this year !

These little photo essays of yours are really, really good. I very
much like seeing an intelligently chosen photo of a piece of water,
then learning from which spots in it fish were taken.

And what could be more welcome than a new piece of trout water opening
up just 5 minutes from home? Congratulations.

Hi Willi,
Thanks for the report and the pics. Looks like a neat area. Reminds me a
bit of Bear Creek here in Denver downstream from the Reservoir. (I know you
know that stream)
Traveled through your neck of the woods yesterday. Went to Cabela's in
Sidney. Strangely, I didn't buy a thing, but my friend who drove, managed
to help support the economy on my behalf. :)
May try to get up to your area this year before runoff starts.
But, gotta get out to Waterton Canyon and Bear Creek here first to see if I
can get my almost perfected flailing style of casting in shape.
I'll know when I'm in Waterton I can probably hook a few bikers and joggers
with relatively ease. (hmmm. . .might have to up the rod weight for the
bikers . . . can usually turn a jogger without too much trouble )

Exactly right, good job. The fish actually was just about as colorful as
the other one. The light was very harsh? for most of the day and washed
out the color.

It's not a real big problem. During most flows, it is a difficult place
for a casual bait fisherman to have much success. Making it C&R would be
a mixed blessing. The fish might be better protected but if they
designate it C&R, it will be "discovered" by fly fishermen and become
VERY crowded. Right now these areas are pretty much ignored by the local
fly fishermen. I think this is because they are too close and they don't
look like the more mountainous areas the people are used to fishing.
Most people don't even know they hold trout.

With the higher predicted gas prices and the cheap airfares, it's gotten
to the point that flying is cheaper than driving.

Similar in character but bigger water (although with the present low
water levels it's not). It's a typically fertile foothills waterway that
produces disproportionately large fish for the size of the water.

Traveled through your neck of the woods yesterday. Went to Cabela's in
Sidney. Strangely, I didn't buy a thing, but my friend who drove, managed
to help support the economy on my behalf. :)

From what I gather those places have really changed. When I lived in
Denver ( about 25 years ago) Waterton Canyon and Bear Creek were my
haunts. I was teacher at the time and had my Summer off and they were
the places I learned how to fly fish for trout. I would hit the Canyon
or Bear Creek at least three times a week that Summer. The Canyon was
very lightly used at the time and I would see tons of wildlife including
Bighorns, bear, deer and eagles and the fishing was good enough that
even a duffer like I was at the time, would catch fish if you made the
effort to get aways up into the Canyon.

Now there is a new dam in the Canyon and the area is heavily used. Bear
Creek had that recent fish kill. Not changes for the better.

Let me know when you get up. The upcoming week of warm weather should
get the fish moving out of their Winter mode and may start the Olives.
Pre runoff is my favorite.

Willi,
Beautiful pics, nice, colorful fish!! For Joe F and others who have been
there, doesn't this place resemble my Local Trickle? It is a shame my Local
Trout are generally smaller, but they are numerous.

Thanks Willi, and I second what JR said. For someone like myself who is
still learning to read a piece of water, these are valuable and enjoyable
photos.

Joe, you're as fun to fish with as anyone I've ever fished with! And I
remember missing a few fish that you spotted for me because I struck too
quickly.
