Penn's Clave Update and a Show-of-Hands

As we have but two months until the next rendition of the Penn's Creek ROFF
clave, I just wanted to pass along a few things and ask a question of you folks
out there. First, it has been brought to my attention that the current edition
of Fly Fisherman magazine has an article in which Jonas(of the Feathered Hook
Fly Shop/Bed and Breakfast) offers advice on Sulfur hatches. This will be worth
reading for all attendees, as Sulfurs of three species will be the predominant
hatch in mid-May. Despite commentary on Cicadas and such, all attendees should
figure on fishing the following: Sulfurs, March Browns, Grey Foxes, Tan
Caddises.
These bugs in all stages will be worth imitating. Craneflies and assorted
larger Stoneflies will figure in as well, with Stonefly and March Brown nymphs
the most popular for the nymphing set.
Secondly, I want to note that all cabin space at Hemlock Acres is currently
booked for May 16-22. There will be available housing if needed at Shaeffer's
cottages in Aaronsburg, and possibly still some room at the Feathered Hook, and
the Millheim Hotel. Plenty of room for RV's and lots of space in the meadow for
tenters at Hemlock Acres is available as well. Once again, I have offered my
personal guarantee that weather will be ideal for this year's clave. That
guarantee, plus 65 cents will get you coffee at the Sunrise Cafe any morning
from 6 am to noon.
Finally, several have asked, on and off ROFF, what the estimated attendance
will be this year. As could be expected, I have no friggin' clue. Therefore,
could anyone reading this, and planning to attend, please post to that effect,
with expected timeframe visiting us. This will help me: A) Get a Clue and B) Do
a little planning for ideal dates for side events such as group dinners, raffle
nights, mud wrestling, asadi's martini and taco fest, etc. Not that my planning
won't go out the window under peer pressure and the consumption of intoxicants,
but it really would help. Thanks in advance!!!
Tom
p.s. Those of you planning to host/sponsor/watch special events, post those
details as well. I will contact the Millheim as to the wisdom of their
conducting
a Lobster night while we are in town.

BTW, can I buy some of the above mentiond flies at the Feathered Hook?
I have seen patterns on the web but will likely not have the time to tie up
what I need.

I be there from the opening night of the North Carolina cabin and leave
Saturday.

Roger. I will have about three different Sulphur patterns for you plus a Gray
Fox , all in parachute style. There's also other patterns that I will have.
I'd wait until after check in before getting a week's supply. However it's
always nice to pick up a few of the latest patern that Jonas recommends.

At the PA fly fishing show in Ft Washington last weekend, I saw a
presentation by Don Douple (If anyone gets a chance to watch it, its
well worth it). He did a lot of underwater videos of mayflies hatching
in PA. His mantra is to tie a fly that looks like the bug, not someone
else's fly. Two things I took away from that presentation is that the
flies that hang just below the meniscus, like a comparadun or a
parachute pattern, really do well to imitate those bugs trying to break
through. The Pirate showed me a fly that I now tie that is a GRHE
parachute. I will also now tie a PT Parachute. Perfect responses to
this behaivior.
The second item is the color silver. Many of the PA bugs hatch out on
the bottom and then pop to the surface (classic wet flies). Every
single one was covered in an air bubble that sparkled. I intend to wrap
some of my flies in plastic wrap or baggie plastic to imitate this.
We'll see how it works.

I'm a wannabe attendee. I'll be in the Keys for the 3 weeks prior so I
probably won't decide until I get back, and if I do come it will be
Tuesday or Wednesday through the end. Is there room to park a small

Indian Joe suggests--when charlie arrives in the terminator wagon the owner
will probably ask him to rent two spots way off in the woods--if he puts out

not get any fishing done that day

hang just below the meniscus, like a comparadun or a
parachute pattern,

there is a great and simple pattern that works for any mayfly in this stage.

It's a CDC emerger. Uses a trailing shuck of brown zlon, sparse and about the
hook shank length tied on a light wire scud hook. Dub a slim body to match, tie
in a clump of CDC. The secret to the CDC is to strip it off the stem, say about
4 or 5 CDC feathers for a size 16-18. Lay the stripped feathers in a pile and
role them like you would be rolling them up in a cigarette paper (sans paper of
course), tie in the the clump in the middle about 2 eye lengths back from the
eye (in other words, normal position for a mayfly), then pull up and tie post
style. Dub around the the CDC up to the eye.

Then pull the clump toward the hook bend and trim (this gets the approximate
length).

Floats like a cork, can be fished as a dry upstream, or down, then let sink
below the surface and fished like an emerger.

killer pattern. No need for any floatant ever. When the CDC gets wet, a few
false casts clears the water and your good to go.

Here I am.

I'll try to be around as much as possible but I started a new job in
December (much better than the old job, thank you) so I don't have a
lot of vacation to work with this year... I've also got trips out of
town on 5/2-3 and 5/6-10, further depleting my supplly of fishing
time. To top it all off, 5/14 is my daughters 5th birthday...

I should be available for fishing on 5/15 and 5/16. I hope to get at
least one evening of fishing during the week and also to attend the
feed/raffle. My new job is based in Shamokin (not too far from the NY
Bakery in Frackville) so rye bread, if desired, can be had with ease.

If anyone will still be around, I could also be available for fishing
on 5/22-23.

Last year I led two brave souls on a trip to Slate Run in Tioga Co.
It's not a short drive. We all caught native brookies and only saw
one other angler all day long. I'd be up for another trip north if
anyone's interested in trying their hand on a small freestone full of
native brook trout. Slate Run is 'Heritage Trout Angling' water - FF,
C&R and barbless only. FWIW, if the water is high in Coburn, the
water at Slate Run may be ideal.
