I am in the market to buy some breathable waders, size XXLS, from either
Orivs or Simms in the $190 range. Anyone here use Orvis' silver label 2
model?

From my research I have concluded that Simms cannot be beat for quality,
but it seems that Orvis cant be beat for warranty?

I bought a pair recently when they were on sale for $150. Only used them a
couple of times, and they seem fine so far. They seem quite a bit more rugged
than the low end Clearwaters.

I have had good luck with Orvis breathables overall, and their customer service
is great.

I have also heard good things from guys who own Simms, so it's probably six of
one, a half dozen of the other.

Can't give you any info on the Silver Label II's--but I *destroyed* the
original Silver Labels in four years. I then went to the Simms Guides (out
of the $200 range, certainly) and 3 years later they have developed *not
one* leak. I'm, frankly, amazed.

This is NOT an "Orvis bash"--because I like most of the Orvis products I
own--but the waders just don't hold up. IMO. Simms has a "Ligtweight" (or
some such name) in the $200 range--get them over the Orvis.

How many years do you expect to get out of your waders?
Four years doesn't exactly suck for wader lifespan, imo.

Sorry, but I can't help you with that specific model. I had a pair of
the Guide waders. They lasted a couple years before they started
developing pinhole leaks. I will occasionally use them, but have since
replaced them with Simms, Classic Guides. No problems with the Simms so far.

From my research I have concluded that Simms cannot be beat for quality,

Here's a little clip from Orvis's warranty info.

If your waders fail due to a manufacturing or materials defect, Orvis
will repair or replace them at our discretion, free of charge. This
guarantee does not cover abuse, improper care, accidents, or the

normal breakdown of materials over time.

From what I know of your last experience with wader warranty, i'd say,
buy CHEAP. You have a strange situation with your feet/booties. You may
not get them replaced under warranty.

I don't think Simms can be beat for warranty either. Their
lightweights are great, and the guide weights are great too. My guide
weights started leaking in the feet after about 500 days of fishing. I
sent them back, and Simms offered to replace the feet and fix the small
leaks in the rest for $100. I decided they were generally worn enough
that I just bought a new pair of lightweights for 200. I think the
lightweights are just as good as the guide weights, and they kept me
warm as toast all winter steelhead fishing.

Orvis, if you can trust their word, will repair any pair of waders for
life for $30. And they will replace the waders for 4 years.

I ve had the new SImms G 3 s for under a year, lots of leaks and
they haven t been very helpful as far as customer service. The lighter
ones were n t much better. I think their cusomer service could be
better MT

My experience with two pairs from them was the same as yours. I felt
like they were blaming me. They wanted me to pay them some $ (I
forget how much) to have the guide weight ones repaired so I told them
to stuff it.

I met a big shot from Gortex on the river and two of us told him our
experiences with Simms. He said for us to tell Simms so shove it up
their butts and give us new pairs. We didn't bother.

I've switched to Dan Bailey's guide weights and they've been my
favorite so far. John (Bailey) stands behind is products! Orvis too.
I just ordered a pair of their new Pro waders just for the heck of it
:-)

I bought the Patagonia waders--for considerably more than that.
They are, however, guaranteed for life. If they leak (mine don't,
after three seasons) they will fix or replace.

I've had several pairs of cheaper "breathable" waders that didn't
make it through a single season. Now that's expensive.

I'm sure you can trust their word on that. The problem is the time it
takes to get them back. Even if they are quick it will be 10 days to 2
weeks. I just can't quit fishing that long.
