Great TR and pics, Warren. It is a shame you can't make it East this year for
Penn's.
Had a weekend full of Caddis(similar species, a size or two larger) in PA this
past Thurs-Saturday.
Tom
p.s. Email me privately...I have a fly for you
to try out before this hatch ends.

Great TR and great photos. The only caddis I've seen this year came in with
my morning paper a few days ago. The numbers of little corpses littering
the water in some of your shots were amazing to me.

Cheers,

Glad you liked it. Believe me, I wish I were able to come to Penn's
again this year. The fishing was so-so (I still have lots to learn
about that place and that particular type of fishing), having a
chance to meet most of you guys was freaking awesome and the scenery
was a beautiful change of pace. I am hoping to make it again next
year. Your TR brought back some damn good memories for me.

Hell, I'll gladly defer to your memory. I love those memories that
add six to ten inches to a fish over a year.... g

in my book, that's
far from "so-so". but, if so, i trust you'll be showing us the not so-so
in july? ...

There are still several mysteries that I have yet to unravel for
that area and is one of the reasons why I thought the fishing was
so-so. I wasn't exactly prepared in terms of my fly patterns which
proved to be a problem. For instance, I used dubbing for our local
sulphurs not knowing that the sulfurs out there were more of an
orange color. At the end of the clave I felt that I could have done
things differently and done better. Fishing Penn's and the various
other streams of the area is very different from fishing out here
and requires some getting used. My first three days there were
pretty slow and basically a learning experience as I acquainted
myself with the local insect populations and fishing. Following
Makela around for a day caused me to change my techniques a bit and
I had more success, but I still feel as if there is so much to learn
about that place. More time and experience are all that is required
since the river obviously had an abundance of insects and, although
I can't vouch for this firsthand, I hear there are quite a few fish
in the river. ;-)

Fortunately for you, the local streams around here are a bit more
forgiving than Penn's was to me last year (I can explain this
further if needed), but I may be bribed to disclose more information
should you find yourself needing it. g If things continue on
their current trend, July should shape up to be a damn good month
out here. There should be plenty of insect activity and water temps
shouldn't be a factor like they were last year on lower Rock Creek,
which will most likely be a factor around here again in August.

I totally agree that attitude and "upkeep" are a big part of the
equation. But you can't discount good preservatives either. The
human body is basically a fuel-injected engine; see-throughs are

I am amazed every time I see it myself. Can't wait to see it again
and hope the weather cooperates with me tomorrow. The high winds
have eased, the clouds have moved in, the temps have dropped a bit
and there is rain and snow forecast for tomorrow. Basically not
good in terms of the caddis hatch, but I am going to give it a shot
anyway. The hatch is about three weeks early this year and caught
me by surprise, but I think I have enough flies now tied to carry me
through the hatch.

Hi Warren,
Nice TR and nice pics. Hope to get to the Arkansas river in the next week
here in Colorado to "play" with the Caddis also.
I've had them all over my head, face, and waders, and in the bushes(like a
cloud when I walked through), and apparently inside the "footballs" I caught
stuffed with them, and on my windshield, but have not seen them in the
eddies like you showed. Neat.
Obviously I need to get out more this time of year.

Thanks for the beautiful pics. Kristin loved them too.

I was talking to the mgr of Dan Bailey's yesterday. He floated the
day before us and tried to make the best of the whities. He thought
he caught about 80 on dries! I think Jeff could be your new best
friend g

Regardless if any one knows why most the trout aren't eating on top,
we sure did time that day right! Yesterday the wind was nasty (I
would have let you row then for sure! g). and today it was a
blinding snow storm almost all day, wind was gusting, and I think it
topped 34 degrees! About a 40 degree difference than yesterday!
That's living in the Rockies.

I wonder what this weather is going to do to the Caddis hatch?

Any way, it sure was a fun day and we need to do it again while the
caddis are still here (if we can), and when the Salmon Flies arrive
(if we can). The Yellowstone sure has come up a bunch today and is
greener.

Glad you enjoyed them as much as I did. I find myself often putting
down my fly rod and taking up the camera. You had the oars so I was
able to get many more pictures than I usually do. I am still
learning the specifics of this camera and all of its functions, but
I figured out a few more "features" the day after the float that
would have been useful during the float. I look forward to the next
practical application.

Hey, I don't mind whities. But it sounds like Jeff should meet Jeff
Connely. He is the undisputed Rocky Mountain whitefish KING! I
have no idea how many rocky mountain bones I caught, but it was up
there. You saw how many I pulled out of that one hole after our
float. It was an obscene display of catching.....

I agree. It is *still* snowing out here at my house. It may have
quit in town, but being up against the mountains brings us more
precip than town. To tell you the truth, I was baking the other day
on the float. This change in weather is much more soothing to my
Nordic roots. Plus we really can use the precip.

I wonder what this weather is going to do to the Caddis hatch?

My guess is that it most definitely will. The wind will drive them
off the river, the snow will drop most of the already hatched and
the cool weather will slow down the hatch. It is much the same as
the hatch last year on the Maddy but with snow. I have a feeling
that the snow will be very detrimental to the adult population that
has already emerged from the river and that an entire "swarm" of
them are as good as dead before having a chance to do their egg
laying. I am very curious to prove my suspicions and will take a
trip out to the Maddy tomorrow.

Any way, it sure was a fun day and we need to do it again while the
caddis are still here (if we can), and when the Salmon Flies arrive
(if we can). The Yellowstone sure has come up a bunch today and is

The Gallatin and Yellowstone will most likely feel the effects of
the recent precip much more than the lower Madison, if there is any
effect. The ground on this side of the hill has been sucking up the
moisture just as fast as the snow melts so there has actually been
very little in terms of runoff. The hatch was just getting started
over here so perhaps it will still peak after this bout of bad
(actually GOOD) weather passes. Regardless, I plan on being there
to find out. BTW, keep your eyes open for my key chain over at your
spot where we wade fished. It still has turned up on this side of
the hill.

Aw, that ain't nothin'... Yesterday, Fargo ND hit 91F
sometime in the afternoon, and by 10:00PM, the temp had
dropped to 38F. 53 degrees in less than 12 hours. :-)
That's living in ND! :-) Didn't get the blinding snow,

Pretty much the same story for the Madison today. There were still
a few bugs out, but very few on the water or flying around. The
ones I saw were pretty much clinging to brush along the banks and
didn't look very active. It made it easy to get pics of them
though. :-) Towards the end of the day, a few started flying
around, but it was a small percentage of what I saw along the banks
and there were only a few near the water.
