of weird colors, because you never know what might work, and

I agree with Kevin, but I'd favor those weighted with a heavy bead and
fished like a jig.

Some of the old-timey wet flies can be good too (Professor, Royal
Coachman).

If your still in Clear Lake a white or yellow weighted streamer. Fish it
4-5 deep in the daytime. As it gets darker they will rise to the surface.

More important than fly selection or color IMO is the retrieve if you are
fishing a wet fly. It needs to be painfully slow to an order of magnitude. Flip
a small white wooly bugger out and let it sink for 15 or 20 seconds. Then
start lifting the rod at the rate of about an inch a second, if that fast.
Then wait for the faint "tunk" and haul him in.

I use this technique to outfish my old man, the best bait crappie fisherman in
the western hemisphere.

I don't know, but I got lots of crappy flies :-)

Back in Ohio, crappie were the "elusive" fish that I
always wanted to take some time to target, but never did.
I always thought they were beautiful fish, and was
pleasantly surprised every time one of us brought one
in. TV shows that would show them catching these _huge_
2lb'rs ought of southern reservoirs were enough to
make me want to start talkin' with a drawl :-)

I once caught a _very_ nice crappie (for OH at least),
well over a pound, while bass fishing in LaDue Reservoir,
and the only other one I've seen about that big was one
that we netted in the Chagrin River. As kids when we would
go to the river we usually brought along a cast net or
a two-handled seine, and once when the river was _very_
high and muddy, we ran the seine up through the submerged
willows and when we brought it up, there's this huge crappie
flopping in the middle. I don't think I had ever even seen
a crappie in there before that, or after come to think
of it. But there it was.

Just about the time you kids hauled that big old baby out of the water, I
bet you discovered why they call them Crappies. :-)

They were known as Pinkies in the northwoods of Minnesota. They were
just about the only lure ny great uncle used. His target was always
Walleyes and he either used them plain or tipped with a minnow. I was
less particular and used them with great succes on Crappie. I would fish
them suspended below a small bobber. Very effective. Crappie seem to
like suspended lures and flies.

They were also known as pinkies here when I was a small boy, and were a
favorite on the piers into Lake Michigan among perch fishers who scorned
live (more or less) bait.

Well I just can't resist chiming in with my own observations on a question
like this! My NEW favorite (actually not all that different than the old
favs) is the Skip Morrise Panfish fly (SMP for short). It is detailed in
his book "The Art of the Bass Fly". I like to use a down eye fine wire
hook - my current choice is a Gamakatsu size 6 F14 dry fly hook. A bronze
Aberdeen is also a good choice. I use silver bead chain eyes, not lead.
You want a S-L-O-W sinking rate.

The SMP



a.. Hook: 1xl or 2xl dry fly hook, turned down eye. Sizes 6 through 12.
Gamakatsu F-14 size 6 shown.
b.. Weight: Silver bead chain eyes, about 1/8 inch diameter
c.. Thread: Danville Flat Waxed Nylon
d.. Body: The thread is the body material. Flat waxed nylon has a rich,
bright color and looks like floss when used in this application. Coat the
body and rib with clear Sally Hansen "Hard-as-Nails".
e.. Rib: Fine oval tinsel, silver or gold
f.. Wing: Marabou
g.. Flash: Two strands (only) of Mirage Flashabou
h.. Head: Optional, coat the bead chain eyes and thread head with Softex,
Hard as Nails or 5 min. epoxy to make a bullet shaped clear cone.


Suggested Color Combinations: Red-over-yellow marabou with red body,
chartreuse-over-white marabou with chartreuse body, gray-over-white marabou
with orange body, and white-over-white marabou with white body.
