Gurgler swap

Big Dale mentioned this to me last summer when we were chewing through the
bluegill flyswap entries. We both were feeling that if we held a gurgler
swap it would be cool to see the variations. Well, it's bluegill season
here, and I'm tying up a bunch for the summer... I sometimes tie the
original Gartside version (and am demonstrating that tomorrow for my club),
but usually I go for the ease of Estaz for the body, and I am partial to
rubber legs. Is anybody interested? If we can get at least 8 people, I'll
host it. Deadline and other rules TBD, but it will be a fast deadline, like
2-3 weeks.

Never heard of these before so I googled for gurgler. Lord knows what
websites I would be but a mouseclick away from, so I added 'bluegill' to the
search to reduce the chances of unsightly gurglage, however minor this may
have reduced the set.

Not that it matters...but I found this:
http://www.jackgartside.com/step_double_gurgler.htm

Holy crap. These things look absolutely freekin' deadly...and easy to tie to
boot. Oddly [or not] Mr. Gula showed up on around a dozen of the gurgler
hits. I dare say the world could use a 'Gula' Gurgler.

Count me in. Not sure which version I will tie. Everyone already has one of my
favorites. You know that I prefer the tinsel chenille, which is just a short
fibered estaz and of course rubber legs in a size 10 for my beloved bluegill.
Not only is it easier to tie, but it also is prefered by the bluegill and is
much more durable.Later this week I will be teaching a 2.5 hour seminar on
tying Fun With Foam at the FFF Southeast Conclave in Gulf Shores and of course
The Psychedelic Spider will be a part of that fun. By the time I return from
the Conclave, the brim should be on their beds in this area and the real fun
for the year will begin.

This gives me an excuse to tie up a bunch more of the fly I enjoy tying more
that any others.

Great. We have at least 3 people.

I fished one of your spiders this past Saturday. We gave casting lessons
for our TU chapter at friend's private pond and after the lessons we fished
for a few hours. I caught a small bass, a pair of 'gills and a pair of
crappies on that spider. Plus, the smaller bluegills put on a show by
grabbing the legs and towing it around.

Just tried to glue some foam together to make some cicadas (an orange
and black cicada gurgler would be a killer in a couple of weeks).
Superglue didn't work, epoxy cracked, white glue gets wet, don't have
the patience for hotmelt glue. What do you all use?

I've used Zap-A-Gap with success.

When I want the foam to be a little stiffer I simply use the green bottle of
Zap-A-Gap. Other that then, I use that plain o'le rubber cement. I use the
Zap-A-Gap mst often as I can glue the foam while the fly is in the vise and the
Zap-A-Gap lives at my tying station. I most often tie a simple gurgler type fly
and glue another layer of some bright colored foam on top so that it is easier
to see in the water. As in a black beatle with a bright yellow layer on top.
Let your mind wander and be creative. Have fun with this ****. I sent Bobby
Knight a dozen black ones with red on the top since I are a Red Raider.

I noticed that Jack Gartside is recommending getting the sticky foam sheets
(one side pre-glued). I've seen them in the craft stores. I don't tie the
double layer ones (yet) but I sometimes tie a small piece of white on top
when I'm tying off the front.

I think we have four serious tyers, including Indian Joe who's on his way to
Penns Creek for the week. I'm going to wait about 2 weeks and announce this
again when people get back. I'm in even if we only have a few people
because I use a lot of these over the summer.

Dale, I hung a psychedilic spider in a tree Wednesday evening in your
honorg Fished a gurgle frog after that with great success even picking up
4 crappies on top.

That's a good idea. I noticed that pw did that (bright yellow) with his hoppers
for the DDFS: http://tinyurl.com/3x3z5. I'm going to do that from now on with
the purple gurglers I tie ( http://tinyurl.com/2y6d7 ) to make them easier to
see in the water.

Another variation of the Gurgler foam, is some very heavy duty stuff
that a gentleman out here has been using and selling. I'm not exactly
sure what it is, but it's extremely durable, thick, and floats well.
Being it's so dense, it rides a bit lower in the water, and creates
quite a disturbance when you retrieve it. The foam is almost bulletproof.

Goop will work. Comes in a tube, at Walmart, Lowe's, similar places.

I am going to repost this as it is not showing on my puter
I use 3M Super 77 spray adhesive for foam It is wonderfull I sandwiched a
small rattle inbetween two pieces of foam after carving out a pocked with a
dremal tool. I used a small piece of red foam for the eyes. Try using a WD
40 spray tube for the eyes . Cut to leanth and heat with a small butane
torch Makes very neat barbell eyes. Leaving in the morning for the cicida
hatch for 4 days Life is good!
