Off to the Cape tomorrow to chase stripers (wayno, that's stripers,
not strippers, quit jumping up and down, yelling "Take me! Take me!")

Greg's already down there, warming them up. Hopefully I'll catch one
that's worth a picture

Play nice while I'm gone.

i went to dayton once. i think it was about 1989, for the "grand
american" world championship trap shooting event. thousands of people
shooting at clay targets, requiring the ability to hit damn near everyone
thrown, to excel.

the place was like a scene from "lord of the rings", where the orks are
....conceived.

Grew up in Greenwood (folks and brother still live there) and they
report the smallie fishing north of town in the White River can be
pretty good.

I just figured it out, its all a Canuckistani plot. Send the security
folks to the interior and all the Canuckistanians head to the coasts to
prepare for their attack on Tampa Bay.

No problem, hell it's just about as far from Indy to SW Cheeseland if you'd
like to try some Wolfieland instead. Seriously if you want to stay over a
weekend let me know, to save you drive time, the Cabela's near Detroit is
due north of Toledo, I could pick you up there, else it's about a 6 hour
drive from Indy to Grayling.

I fished it a few times when I first came to town, I'm not into the
smallmouth, probably because I really don't cast streamers very well (when I
lived near Chicago the Fox river had some prolific caddis hatches and I did
have fun catching them on EHC's.) I thought Mr. Church was going to arrange
a float trip this Spring but I guess his travel schedule intervened.

Do you ever come visit? If so let me know, you can give me smallie lessons.

I've been trying to scout places to do that since I've been here. I thought
I had some places set but I had my wallet stolen from my car and never
bothered to replace the hunting license so last year was a wash.

If you guys want to spend another day driving, I can get you into some

Yep, 17 hours and 1100 miles according to Mapquest from Greenwood to

I spent about 25 years in Ohio and have never been to Dayton.

As I was hitting the post-a-reply button, I had second thoughts

I never got there this year but I think I have access to a good sized farm
near Ottawa Illinois, but I have been doing a contract job in Brazil IN, the
guy I work for is a local boy and I noticed that unlike the farms around
Indy, the crops are harvested with quite a bit of remaining stuble. He tells
me there are wild pheasants in the area and he can get me access to some of
the farms. Lastly there is an active Pheasants Unlimited chapter which I
keep meaning to attend. So by November there might be a few options open if
you come.

If nothing else, I have a distant relative who owns a farm in Iowa and
raises dogs raised for upland hunting, it's about 7 - 8 hours from where I
live which is about 4 miles east of Greenwood.

Problem we had in SW Kansas the last two years I was there was there was not
enough rain. While I admit a ND pheasant hunt does sound appealing, Iowa and
SD is between you and I and they have fairly good hunting. Now if you want
to meet halfway sometime grin

Oh boy! Think it would be OK to lend out your gun, or are you planning to
shoot your sorry ass, yourself? I can see the headline in the Daily Rustbelt
Blowhard, . . .

"Drunk Ratgutter Shoots Self in Ass, Bear Freed from Cellar "Sex Den""

UPI, Dateline, Rustbeltia,
"In the aftermath of Rustbeltia's most bizarre shooting in 15 years,
terrorized local elderly express relief as 76 emaciated cats are taken to
local shelters. Police spokesperson, Marie Ginal, stated "we have cleared
numerous crank call cases based on disgusting comments found crayoned on the
whackjob's home.""

"In the same case, health department personnel sealed Weirdo Street as an
obviously molested bear was released from a cellar "sex den." As the bear
was rushed to treatment for severe Limbaugh Warts, a perplexed neighbor
stated. . . "Mr. Wolfgang vell he be one strange dude yeah dat be sure, you
betcha." Fearing retaliation, the frail elderly neighbor asked to stay
anonymous."

I'm back. I can see why. With all the things to do in Dayton, you end
up spending a lot of time in the gym.
Kinda scary that the big trap and skeet shooting range is along side and
pointing at the runway as you land.
We went to a retirement party in Oxford Ohio, home of Miami University
(slogan "we're expensive so go away"). The University reminded me of
the Arizona prisons in tents in the middle of the desert. If you try to
ditch school, they'll just follow the buzzards till they find your body.
Dayton is an exciting town. One of the most exciting things there is
the Al Cicada terrorist group. They've gotten hit especially hard and
put lot of windshield cleaning bums on the street.
They also specialize in maps that proudly proclaim the town names in
inch high letters and cover up the streets and street names.
Obroff: There is a river running through town. Since it seems like I
may be going back there, anyone know what the smallie situation there is
like?

Frank, this URL will connect you with a few resources. The Great Miami is an
excellent smallmouth fishery just north of Dayton, as is the Stillwater
River and lower sections of the Mad River (upper sections are brown trout
water) - both of which are tributaries of the Great Miami. The confluence
of the three rivers is in downtown Dayton. The lowhead dam right by the art
museum off I75 in Dayton also fishes very well for smallies and other
species, if you like an urban skyline behind your flyrod!

There are 29,113 miles of river in Ohio, not including the Ohio R. itself.
Most of it has a smallmouth bass population. Some of it is phenomenal.

Here's a link to the map section of the local TU chapter's website.
http://www.tumadmen.org/Maps/StRt36ToOldTroy.html

I'm not sure that these are the best maps, but they should get you started.
Basically, think Urbana, OH. If you are looking for fishing reports, Mad
River Outfitters (in Columbus) usually has some decent information about the
Mad, the Clearfork (in Mansfield) and the steelhead rivers when they are
fishing. They are located at
http://www.madriveroutfitters.com/fishing%20reports.htm
