I'm thinking about picking up a Buzz-off hat, and maybe a bandana. Anyone tried the stuff yet? Just got back from a two week field test. I bought the bandana and wore it every day. The black flies and skeeters were bad, but I managed to get only one or two bites. Joanne did a Google on the main ingredient and bought a bottle of the stuff. She followed the instructions and did a t-shirt as an experiment. No chemical smell, and it worked. With a hat, bandana, and long sleeved t-shirt treated, I'd say you were pretty well protected. No smell or mess either. Dave http://hometown.aol.com/davplac/myhomepage/index.html |

Rusty Hook wrote I originally bought the stuff while on summer vacation when the deer flies were driving my dog crazy. It worked so well for him that I sprayed my hat too. Once they land on the hat, it's lights out. brand name? yfitons wayno |

If it's permethrin, look for Davis Kill-A-Bug in the 2lb per gallon formula (2E?) at most ag/feed-type stores. It should be about 10.00USD for an 8 oz. bottle __OF CONCENTRATE__ -DO NOT USE IT OUT OF THE BOTTLE ON ANYTHING- and that will make enough up to do you, the house, the yard, etc. Just for a cost idea, if I remember correctly, and assume I do not, it's a .50 to 1% mix rate (i.e., .64 to 1.28 oz. to 1 US Gallon of water), BUT READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. It's made by Louisiana Chemical in Baton Rouge, if that helps. TC, R |

TC, R NB - I just checked the instruction flyer's ratio tables, and 1% is ag use, and given the warnings on it, I'll just say "read the directions" if you use it. R |

You dilute it down a LOT to use it, so I expect the quart to last approximately the rest of my life. Well, you could just get a 4" brush, paint it on directly, and you'd probably both peter out together... Jokes, aside, folks, what you _can_ get at ag supply stores, co-ops, etc., ain't necessarily what you _ought_ to get, and I'll admit I was possibly guilty of a hasty recommendation in forgetting the above advice. While it can be a decently-priced source of such items, it can also get you sick or worse...hey, I realize I very well may be giving casting tips to Joan Wolfe with this, but it's better than not doing so and seeing any of Ken's dear friends suffer... If you do get any form of concentrate, READ THE LABEL! And no, do not rely upon the staff unless you know them, IMO. HTH (really), R |

The Sawyer stuff is already formulated to apply directly to clothing. More expensive than the concentrate but saves a lot of hassle. Actually, for most folks, the "real" concentrates are probably the wrong way to go, hassle aside, so if the Sawyer stuff is ready-to-use, I'd say that sounds like the way to go for most. TC, R |

Rusty Hook wrote I originally bought the stuff while on summer vacation when the deer flies were driving my dog crazy. It worked so well for him that I sprayed my hat too. Once they land on the hat, it's lights out. Wayno: brand name? It is Absorbine Flys-X, a ready-to-use pyrethrin-based insecticide. It also has some citronella thrown in, so it probably works (somewhat) as a repellent too. I got a quart bottle of it at Co-Op Feeds a few years ago for $6.95 According to the label, the stuff is strong enough to kill ants, but is ok to apply to livestock, pets, and household use. The only warnings I saw were not to drink it, spray it on food, put it in your eyes, or pour it into a trout stream. Also, if you decide to burn the container, it would not be wise to breathe the smoke. If you are willing to live within those rules, you should be reasonably safe. The label had no warning against spraying it on your skin, but it didn't say you could, so I don't. I spray it on my hat. When I do, it really cuts down on the number of bugs that buzz around my head (more than once), and when I spray the dog, the deer flies leave him alone. For my skin, I use Skin-so-soft, in the Bug Guard Plus formula. It's the original Skin-so-soft, with sunscreen plus another insect repellent added. Works better than the DEET-based stuff, IMO, and lasts longer, too. Plus, the mosquitoes tell you when it's time to put on more sunscreen g. -- Rusty Hook Laramie, Wyoming |

I got a quart bottle of it at Co-Op Feeds a few years ago for $6.95 And as long as you're getting into the Absorbine line, try some of the linament, too. Works for all the things the drugstore "Absorbine, Jr." does, but a little better and much cheaper. Great on insect bites, tired and sore muscles, and, if you don't mind the smell, a general "skin refresher" when doing outdoor-type activities. And as an aside, you can drop a VERY few drops into Herbsaint or other "Absinthe" replacements and have your wormwood back, if you are so inclined...G....Um, John, when you try this, that means A VERY FEW drops...G...
