I took the family and the camper out for a warm-up run to the Sierras in
preparation for the upcoming Western Clave. I wanted to be sure that I
wouldn't lose any time from beating up old men and baiting bears and riding
ATVs in the Illegal Zones and shootin up the campground while drunker than
Cooter Brown and all the other usual pastimes that we all so enjoy out West.
And its a damn good thing I did, too. My truck broke down in the midst of LA
rush hour traffic and the propane system gave out about halfway through the
extended weekend (Where's Hank Hill when ya need him?). All is repaired and
ready except my wallet, which took a substantial draining.

My son, Ryan , had tried flyfishing about five years ago and is not much
interested in fishing. However, once he stopped watching me and started
trying on his own, he did pretty darn well. We hiked the Lyell fork of the
Tuolumne on Friday. What a beautiful place. Lots of fish and stunning
scenery.

On Saturday we hiked into a high valley of many lakes interconnected by
small streams. The lake fishing was ok but the fish in the streams were
ravenous. We took turns catching brookies and rainbows from one tiny riffle
that could not have been 12 feet long or 8 feet wide. Ry musta caught 12 or
14 fish out of that riffle.

The road to my favorite set of high lakes was still closed from the late
spring snow. Maybe I'll go back later in the season.

I don't know if Ry is ready to give up his surfboard for a flyrod, but I
sure hope he can mix in a little time with the old man.

There's a few pics posted at ABPF.

A good report Danl, sounds like part of the west still has water. It
looks fine up here in Washington too, but we'll know better in a month.

Good pictures also.

No, I did not avail myself of Joe and Jeff's *Rustic Cabins.com* service
this year. I'll be motoring up I-15 in Danl's Tiltin' Hilton. That way I can
bring my own collection of rodentia and not need to rely on the local
supply. Besides, the airline Nazis won't let me bring enough liquor, guns
and ammo, much less my complete set of "Geezer Shillelaghs" (TM) or my
little 4-wheel Poach-Mobile, and of course, Jeffie's weekly supply of fresh,
canned and bottled olive products. I hope I have enough room left for rods
and reels and such.

When are you planning to arrive at Clave Central? I want to be sure you're
there first so you don't erect your four-story Choc's Tower in my view of
the lake.

may even be there earlier depending on the camping situation in the

OK,OK, There shall be beer and wine on board. But to make room, I'll have to
leave the ATV at home.

Cindy would really like to attend. She always has a great time with all the
various scruffians at the claves. She just has too much damn fun playing
ranger at the local state park. If she leaves for a week, she feels she
would let her fellow workers down. Obviously she has not been bitten by the
Fish Claving Bug as deeply as some of us. Maybe she and I can darken the
appropriate doorsteps at the CACA in October.

Danl,

I'm going to give it a shot.
My Range Management Specialist friend from my ranching days is coming out
July 7th with his 2 sons for a backpack/fishing trip to my favorite alpine lake
in the Bighorns. I'm the guide. It's a killer hike but I hope to be in good
enough shape that I'll be able to make the drive to the clave.
We get back Sun. July 11th so I wouldn't be able to get on the road until
Mon. the 12th. In other words, I'd miss half the clave. It's a long drive for
4 days of fishing.
So, I'd be able to fish July 13th to the 17th. Will there be any of my clave
buddies there at that time?

Budget? What budget? Danl's Madison Express Western Flyer pulls out of the
station at precisely O-Dark-Thirty on pre-clave Thursday. There remains one
First Class and one Coach seat available for non-paying ROFFian
passengers.(Non-ROFFians are still subject to the G, A, or G payment plan).
Throw a tent and a sleeping bag into the luggage compartment (currently
allocated to geezer-bashing apparati and olive-stuffed pasties) and, as
