Conversations with Lefty
Lefty Kreh is in the fly shop at Bass Pro Baltimore today. He's signing
books and just sitting down and chatting with folks. No real line, so I sat down with him to chat. Got a book signed (Lefty's Little Library - Modern Casting Methods) and gave him one of my "Frank's Fitin' Craw." He was kind and said he liked it. On business: We talked about the demise of Fishermans Edge, Joe Bruce's fly shop that will be closing next weekend. He said that one of the biggest problems of small fly shops is that they don't sell cloths. They take up a lot of space, but they're a constant source of revenue. You can sell someone so many rods and reels, but the folks that drop in all the time will pick up a shirt and spend some cash a lot quicker than they will drop 3 to 5 hundred dollars for a new rod. On knots: He no longer fishes the improved clinch to attach fly to tippet. He has gone to the slip knot http://www.graysofkilsyth.com/fishing.htm#Slip%20Knot 3 turns for 5 lb test or over, 5 turns for under 5 lb test. He demonstrated the strength against the improved clinch, each time, the clinch broke, but not the slip. On young women in red cars: Dangerous, they'll run you over. On the "Kreh Number": He'd never heard of it, and thought it was rather funny. We are fast approaching a time where we won't have the innovative likes of Kreh, Clouser, Wulff, Bruce and the rest. I hope someone's taking notes and getting all this info down. -- Frank Reid Reverse email to reply |

/daytripper Yeh, well, I was getting a volume of "Lefty's Little Library of Fly Fishing" autographed. He opened the jacket and saw Bob Clouser's signature there. "Anybody got any White-Out?" Then he opened to the title page, and found he'd already signed it 3 years ago (okay, I forgot). Luckily, I had another volume with me. Hey, Lefty's a local, can't get rid of the guy :-) -- Frank Reid Reverse email to reply |

It was signed by Kreh and Sosin. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

During my college and guiding years, I had a collection of autographed books. When I was going overseas, in an effort at 'slimming down', I hauled all my used books and albums off to a local bookbuyer. Later, I remembered all those autographs I had acquired, and sadly thought how happy some SOB will be when they buy some book and find it signed. Some were rather classy, like I got Stephen King (who guest-taught an english class in college) to autograph a first edition of Carrie.... I don't even want to think of what that is worth now. --riverman |

Stan Gula had a good conversation with him, too, but it had nothing to do with fly fishing and they weren't sitting down at the time, IIRC. -- TL, Tim http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

Did Lefty tell the story about the 3 foot tall pygmy killing the huge Rhino?

He has gone to the slip knot http://www.graysofkilsyth.com/fishing.htm#Slip%20Knot 3 turns for 5 lb test or over, 5 turns for under 5 lb test. Looks a lot like a knot he recommends in the September 2004 issue of Fly Fisherman mag, which arrived yesterday. There, he calls it the "fisherman's knot" or "16-20" knot. Good grief, is it September already? (I know mags are dated ahead, but this is ridiculous!) vince |

When I run out of toilet paper, prints of your posts come in *extremely* useful! Jerkoff...... I get this vague sense that our friendship ain't exactly at its zenith right now. Is that correct? Wolfgang who knows he shouldn't feel this hurt and betrayed.....but..... |
