OT, sort of: Car rental in Wales?
Hi folks: I'm due to arrive in Bristol this coming Tuesday and am headed to
Wales for some fishing, and am looking for an affordable rental car for 5 days. So far, I can only find ones online at AVIS that will cost me about $450 for that time (about 250 pounds) and that seems very expensive. I need to pick it up in Bristol, and deliver it to Plymouth. Is there a local rental agency with good cars that have a better price than this? Thanks --riverman |

However Looking via Google I raised quite a few companies which may be better than AVIS. Have you had a quote from Hertz? I entered "Car rental in Wales" and Google threw out quite a few names. -- Bill Grey http://www.billboy.co.uk |

Thank, Bill. The sites all list Avis at about $217, but when the hidden fees are added, it becomes $450! I'll see if there's a site that doesn't have so many hidden costs. Any chance of getting together to cast a line next week? I'll drive. --riverman |

Thanks --riverman Assume you will hire in Bristol and return to Bristol - If you hire at the airport then you will be paying top money - contact one of the local companies when you arrive and you will pay a lot less. When I ran a car hire operation I had many customers who did this with me and it was to both our advantage. Frank Healy -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |

Assuming I can get out of Kinshasa on Sunday, I've got reservations at the Cammarch Hotel in Llangammarch Wells for Tuesday, but I might just find a campsite and tent it instead. I'm free from Tuesday until Sunday, when I need to be in Plymouth. However, I'll have wheels and I want to explore the region a little bit. I certainly want to spend a day on the Towy, and a couple days around Builth Wells. Where are you at? --riverman |

And of course as you are no more than an hour away in Builth you must get to Paul Morgan's shop COCH-Y-BONDDU BOOKS Pentrerhedyn Street, Machynlleth, Powys SY20 8DJ U.K. Don't miss it if you've not been on previous visits (apolgies if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs) His site is here http://www.anglebooks.com Thanks, Carla, I explored and learned to pronounce Machynlleth in my travels through there in 1998, but I didn't go to that bookstore. From looking at the link you provided, I'll almost certainly make a stop there this time. Thanks! --riverman |

Reverse the letters before the @ to get my email address: It will be fun to get together for a hello! --riverman Well after finally making telephone connection on Tuesday, I met up with "riverman" at Brecon on Tuesday evening. we had a meal together then took a short tour of the area around Built and Mynydd Epynt. It was great to meet my American friend. A fishing trip was discussed and the venue was a bit indeterminate, so I left "riverman "to ponder where he would like to go on Wednesday. I arrived at Brecon at about 08.45 on Wednesday morning, ant it was decided to try the Irfon at Llangammarch Wells. Riverman had to get his EA licence in Brecon, then we set off over Mynydd Epynt amidst Military goings on (loud explosions etc!) The Cammarch Hotel provided out day tickets and we fished the stretch of the Irfon in Llangammarch Wells. The water was quite low due to the month long dry spell we've enjoyed. Fish could be seen rising spasmodically, but what they were taking was a mystery - possibly something sub-surface. Riverman found a spot in the rock river bed where there was a deep gorge and he watched and tried for a large brown trout for some time to no avail. he later hooked one which got away. I moved on down stream and found a stretch of water with a bit of flow in it - making wet fly fishing a bit easier. I cast a scruffy little brownish wet ( no name because it is one I knocked up myself) comprising some hares ear dubbing and a brown partridge hackle and tail ( a sort of rough March Brown variant). Anyway I spotted my fly drifting over quite a decent fish and saw the fish rise from the bottom and sick in the fly. I lifted into it and I netted a Grayling of about 1.5 to 2.lbs. I brought it in as quickly as I could and released it immediately. I had to get away later in the afternoon so we packed up at about 16.00 and returned to Brecon. Riverman was considering returning to Llangammarch in the evening on his own to see if there was an evening rise. This is a lovely stretch of river, and I'm sure in better water conditions, would produced some fine fish. I await "riverman's" report on his Welsh visit. We had a great time. -- Bill Grey http://www.billboy.co.uk |
