"GaryM" wrote... snip South Beach was not to be spared from the millions of stripers that were swarming the Cape. A memory I shall not forget for a while was a cloud of fish about two acres in size slowly heading my way. Bear in mind that the name of the game on S. Beach is to try to spot one to a few fish as far away as possible. Such a large school is almost in your mind's blind spot and does not register right away. Instinctively I backed away, cheap movie style, and got to about three inches below knee level when the school reached the point I was standing. The lead fish broke around me but the followers did not notice. Over a period of ten minutes this school passed me and I had four fish, all more than 23" but not keepers, from this school. Given the time it took to pass I am guessing it was much larger than I first thought, or it was going circles :)!! That sounds like a real blast, Gary. Thanks for the TR. When you feel like taking a break from the biggies and want to get into some 10-18" trout on some tailwaters, give me a holler. It would be good to see you again. .. . . which reminds me - I ran into George Adams a week or so ago, and he's not half the man he used to be. ;-) -- TL, Tim http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

BTW, just got an email from the VT State Bioligist for the Battenkill and apparently the important 7-9 inch slot is doing well. I'll be trying to get up there in the next few weeks to fish the trikes. (You'll have to explain the G. Adams reference. NJ George. S. Beach Diet??? Atkins for six weeks took 20 lbs off, and calorie counting since mid April removed another 9. Looking to go back on the Atkins for a little while in the fall, as I need to lose another 15/20. I found just the opposite. I was working out a bit (cardio) while on the diet, and maintained a good energy level. I think the trick is to eat enough fat to keep the energy level up. Also, I was limiting myself to about 1500/1700 calories a day. It does get awful boring, though. I'm still sick of hard boiled eggs and sugar free Jello. With S. Beach salads, lean meats and veggies are encouraged which makes it a healthier diet than Atkins, or so they claim. Actually Atkins encourages veggies and salads as well, but only those with low carbs. They suggest a green salad which would provide most of the allowed carbs, as well as roughage. Othe veggies I ate were snow pea pods and asparagus, two of my favorites. I think many folks who try Atkins are afraid to include enough fat in the diet. You have to lose the old "pyramid" concept, and include enough fat to replace the carbs, otherwise your energy level will go to hell in a handbasket. Although I could never adapt to Atkins full time, (too restrictive and very boring), while I was on it, all of my cholestrol and triglyceride numbers were good, and I recorded the lowest blood pressure, (114/56), of my adult life. Also, by eliminating added sugar, most refined flour, and by instituting portion control, I have avoided the "rebound effect" that has been reported following Atkins, and , in fact, have continued to lose weight, albeit at a much slower rate. Tim, regarding Mass Appeal. Next Wed I am off, but I could make it to the Swift by 3pm on most days except Fri, depending on workload. I can usually get away after 3:00 PM on weekdays, as well. By the way, what bugs are on the water these days? Most caddis (tan, gray, brown), sulphurs, March brown, light Cahill are all doing well. Attractor patterns (Adams, Wulffs) have a lot of success, too. The usual suspects as far as nymphs are concerned (GRHE, PT), and GRW and/or green weenies may be the ticket soon. I fished a few gasp streamers a week or so ago and came up with a couple of brutes. I'll try to get out between now and then and get the latest news. George - can you add to this? Sulphurs seem to be waning, but for such a short river, there can be a big variation in hatches. I haven't been above Rte 9 in a couple weeks, but I'll bet the Sulphurs are still strong up there. Don't overlook terrestrials. I know one guy who uses only inchworms in the summer and does quite well there. Small black ants do well too. Please share. I don't believe I've ever seen that Jong Midge pattern. It's either Jong or Yong, I don't remember. Anyhow, patterns don't come much simpler. Hook: Any, size 18 and smaller. Tail: None Body: Coats & Clark medium brown all purpose sewing thread. Head: Black tying thread. Twist the sewing thread while tying to give a segmented appearance. The color of the thread can be changed to imitate the midge du jour. Sometimes I substitute a black glass bead for the head. Adding a short wing of CDC or Hare's foot turns it into an emerger.
